This distance learning experience was created specifically for you, to learn from home. Each lesson should take about 45-60 minutes to complete. During that time you will be reading content and/or watching videos for approximately 10-15 minutes, the rest of the time will be spent completing a hands-on activity. Flooring is another example of using area to estimate costs. Often times you will see flooring costs displayed as per sq. ft. or sq. yard. In many instances the cost per sq. ft. is a fine way to estimate costs. There are instances where this method can be misleading. Carpet for instance comes in rolls of a specific width. If you have a room that is 16 ft. wide and 20 ft. long the area of the room is 320 sq. ft. If the roll of carpeting is 12 ft. wide and you asked for 320 sq. ft. of carpet they might give you a piece that is 26.67 ft. long. This would not cover your space because carpet must be installed so that each piece runs in the same direction. One option would be to sell you 32 linear ft. or 384 sq. ft., which means that you would have 4 ft. of waste. Not understanding this could cause a large miscalculation.

A typical 1 gallon can of paint will cover roughly 400 sq. ft. of wall surface. However, you will also need to determine if you need multiple coats of paint. It is always best to have more than you need so that you can do touch-ups in the future.

One of the most important things you can do to promote wellness is to wash your hands. In the following activity, you learn and practice the World Health Organization's recommended technique for washing hands.

Culinary Arts simply put is the art of cooking! The word culinary is defined as something related or connected to cooking or kitchens. A culinarian is someone who has studied and continues to study the art of cooking. A culinarian working in a restaurant is commonly known as a cook or chef.Culinary Artists are responsible for skillfully preparing meals that are as appealing to the eye as they are to the palate. They are required to have a vast knowledge of the science of food as well as a strong understanding of diet and nutrition.

Individuals who work in healthcare occupations deal with many different diseases. A disease is any abnormal condition causing a disorder in the structure or function of a human, animal or plant. Some diseases are communicable and require isolation. A communicable disease is spread from one person to another through direct or indirect contact (blood, feces, or other bodily fluids), contact with a contaminated surface, the air, contaminated food or through bites from insects or animals capable of transmitting the disease. Examples of communicable diseases include colds, the flu, food poisoning or measles. Non-communicable diseases are those that cannot be transferred from person to person and include cancer, diabetes, and stroke.

Disease-causing agents are biological pathogens that cause or spread disease. Infectious diseases can be caused by: Bacteria - living microscopic organisms (strep throat, urinary tract infections, tuberculosis) Virus - non-living microscopic organism transferred through living things (colds, flu, HIV, chickenpox, meningitis) Fungi - organisms that get nutrients from other living or dead things (ringworm and athlete's foot) Parasites - microscopic one-celled organisms (Malaria is caused by a tiny parasite transmitted by a mosquito bite. Other parasites may be transmitted to humans from animal feces.)

Natural disasters can happen to anyone, anywhere and at anytime. The geographical area in which you live may determine the type of disaster that is more likely to affect you and your home. Whether it's a severe winter storm, flood, tornado, hurricane, earthquake or other national emergency, being prepared for these conditions and the utility outages that will likely accompany them is very important to the safety of your home and family.The easiest type of preparation for a disaster is to create a family disaster preparedness plan and assemble a kit and have it available at all times. Your kit should be kept in a special place and in a water-and fireproof container to protect it from damage.Here are a few things you should include in your kit in case of an emergency: A three-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day.) A three-day supply of ready to eat canned meats, vegetables, and fruit for each person. A change of clothing and footwear for each person. A first-aid kit that includes any prescription and non-prescription medicines. A battery-powered radio and flashlight and extra batteries. Emergencies, like natural disasters, can happen without any warning and family members may not all be in the same place. How will you communicate with one another if this situation occurs? Creating a family emergency communication plan will help you answer the question of "what if?" before a real emergency actually happens. How will I reach my family members? How will I know if they are safe? Where should I go? Creating a family emergency communication plan involves three steps: Collect: Create a paper copy of the contact information for your family and other important people/offices, such as medical facilities, doctors, schools, or service providers as well as an out-of-town contact person. Share: Everyone in the family should carry a copy of the plan in their backpack, purse or wallet as well as post a copy in a central location in your home, such as your refrigerator or family bulletin board. Practice: Hold regular household meetings as a family to review and practice your plan.

One drawback to the square foot rule is that it doesn't account for labor and material costs in a specific area. In certain parts of the nation, contractors are significantly more expensive.

Factors that affect home maintenance and repair include: Age - New construction will require less maintenance than older homes. Weather - Both cold and hot climates can cause strain on a home's structure. Condition - The older the home, the more impact a previous owner's care (or lack thereof) will impact the home's maintenance needs. Location - Homes located in areas that create environmental stresses, like floodplains, will impact the amount of care and maintenance it needs. Type - The size and construction of a home will affect costs.

The French have a phrase that becomes part of every chef's vocabulary. The term Mise En Place (MEES en PLASS) means "putting in place" or "everything in its place". What does that mean to a chef? It means they don't start cooking until everything is set up and organized including all cooking equipment, utensils and ingredients.

Follow these basics steps when starting a new recipe: Step 1: Read the recipe before you start to cook. Be familiar with all the terms in the recipe. If you are not sure what a term means, look it up. Step 2: Delegate jobs. Who is going to wash and dry the dishes; who is going to clean the counters and the sink? Step 3: Get out all needed tools and equipment. Step 4: Assemble all ingredients and get them ready to use. Wash, chop, cut or complete other pre-preparation as needed. Step 5: Weigh or measure all ingredients. Step 6: Follow the sequence of steps outlined in the recipe.

Chefs can achieve a specific title to distinguish their area of expertise. A few examples of these titles include: Saucier - a chef who prepares sauces Poissonnier - a chef who specializes and is responsible for preparing all of the fish dishes in the kitchen Rotisseur - a chef who is in charge of preparing any roasted or braised meats on the menu Grillardin - a chef who is responsible for any foods that must be grilled including meats, poultry, or vegetables Entremetier - a chef who prepares vegetables, soups, starches and eggs Tournant - is the relief cook. Moist heat cooking uses water, liquid or steam to transfer heat to food. Moist heat cooking emphasizes the natural flavors in foods and can be enhanced by using flavored liquids, such as broth or cooking wine as the heat transfer medium during the cooking process. The leftover liquids from the cooking process can be used further to create a sauce or stock.Moist heat methods are especially useful for foods that need softening. Less tender cuts of meat, tough vegetables, such as beans, and dried pasta soften throughout the cooking process. Unfortunately, the softening effect provided by moist heat cooking methods that some foods rely upon, can cause nutrient loss and structural damage if overused.

Each year, thousands of children and adults are killed or injured by accidental poisoning. Many common household products are extremely toxic and should be handled with great care. These products should be kept away from small children and safety devices such as rubber gloves, safety glasses and respirators should be used when these products are used in the home.

Never store a chemical in anything other than its original container. Always keep all chemicals and cleaning products safely locked up or out of the reach of children. Store all chemical and cleaning products away from areas where pets have access. Store chemicals in a dry, cool place away from stoves, heaters and pilot lights. Clearly label or mark all hazardous products when they are stored away. Do not store any chemical or other hazardous products near any food or items used to prepare food.

Financial wellness is the active process of managing your resources to maintain a positive relationship with your money. Managing financial wellness involves the ability to make informed financial decisions and investments, as well as prepare for current and future financial needs. Money plays a critical role in our overall well-being and although financial wellness is not the key to happiness, a feeling of financial control can reduce stress and anxiety in other areas of life. Nutrition impacts your emotional well-being and your emotional well-being can also impact your nutrition. Being aware of your emotions and the food triggers that go with them is important. Knowing that when you are experiencing certain emotions you may be more likely to overindulge or vice versa is key. Take the emotion stress for example. According to the American Psychological Association, "stress causes your body to seek sugar as quick fuel for a surge of energy." That may be why many people seek out something sweet to eat when they are under a lot of stress. In the short term there may be very little affect on your overall health; however if you are under constant stress it could have a large impact. Recognizing that emotions affect your choices is important and choosing healthier ways to deal with your emotions is key to maintaining wellness.

Clean the lint screen/filter before or after drying each load of clothes. Clean the dryer vent and exhaust duct periodically. Clean behind the dryer, where lint can build up. There are a variety of commonly used basic cooking methods that can be used while cooking. These methods can be divided into three general groups. Dry heat cooking involves the transfer of heat to a food using air or fat, without any added moisture. Typically, dry-heat cooking temperatures need to reach 300°F or higher. Cooking using this method results in foods having a much richer flavor, due to the caramelization and browning process which cannot be attained using moist-heat cooking techniques.

When talking about the necessary knives one should have in their kitchen, the truth is, if you have the three following knives, you can pretty much get any food related job done in the kitchen. A Chef's Knife - A multi-purpose knife designed to perform well at many differing kitchen tasks, rather than excelling at any one in particular. It can be used for mincing, slicing, and chopping vegetables, slicing meat, and disjointing large cuts of meat. A Paring Knife - A small knife with a plain edge blade that is ideal for peeling and other small or intricate work (such as deveining a shrimp, removing the seeds from a jalapeño, "skinning" or cutting small garnishes). It is designed to be an all-purpose knife, similar to a chef's knife, except smaller. A Bread Knife - Used for cutting bread and is one of many kitchen knives used by chefs. The serrated blades of bread knives are able to cut soft bread without crushing it.

Rather than planting your index finger on the top of the knife's blade, use the pinch grip technique. For a more firm, concentrated grip, pinch the blade of the knife where it meets the handle with your thumb and index finger. Utilize this grip on any chef's knife to perform the controlled rocking motion used by experienced chefs.

Standard precautions for all patient care include the following: Perform hand hygiene. Wash hands before, after and during procedures to avoid the transfer of microorganisms to other patients or environments. Use personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes gloves, gowns, masks, eye protection, foot covers and face shields. Ensure appropriate patient placement. Use a private room for a patient who may contaminate the environment or who does not assist in maintaining appropriate hygiene or environmental control. Properly handle, clean and disinfect patient care equipment and instruments and environment. Follow sterilization procedures to maintain a sterile environment. Handle textiles and laundry carefully. Handle, transport and process used linen to avoid the transfer of microorganisms to other patients or environments. Ensure proper handling of needles and other sharps. Prevent injuries while using, cleaning and disposing of used needles or sharps.

The spread of infection happens due to errors and not following standard precautions as outlined above.

The 1% rule says you should set aside one percent of the purchase price of your home each year for ongoing maintenance and repair costs. For example, if a home was purchased for $250,000, then $2,500 should be budgeted each year for regular maintenance and repair expenses. This amount isn't the exact amount that should be spent each year, it may fluctuate from one year to the next based upon the type of repair being done. One year, for example, the cost for maintenance and repair may be higher due to replacing a roof, and the next year cost far less. The goal in the end is to balance the cost out over time.

The square foot rule says you should budget $1 per square foot of your home each year for ongoing maintenance and repair costs. For example, if you own a 2,000 square foot home, then $2,000 should be budgeted each year for regular maintenance and repair expenses. The higher the square feet, the more it will cost to maintain. Remember, just like the 1% rule, take into consideration the long-term annual average.

A valuable function of systems that include cameras and other monitoring devices is that it provides evidence later on if a burglar does attempt or breaks into a home or damage has been done to the property. Security cameras will provide a record of this activity and will improve the chances law enforcement can properly identify and prosecute the guilty party.

There are many companies that provide a wide range of home security systems, but homeowners can also buy home security kits that come equipped with all of the major components including a control panel, alarm, sensors, and detectors that can be either wired or wireless. Instructions for installation are also usually included. Security and Fire Alarm Systems Installers install, program, maintain, or repair security or fire alarm wiring and equipment as well as ensure work done is in accordance with relevant codes.

Home security systems help to monitor the most critical areas of a home in order to detect intruders or other environmental incidents that may otherwise go unnoticed. A home security system can be beneficial for the following reasons: safety, as a deterrent, monitoring and detection, and providing evidence.

Home security systems create a safer environment for the entire family by alerting homeowners if someone has attempted to break in whether they are home, not at home or even while they are sleeping.

Another area estimate is used to calculate shingles on a roof. What is unique about a roofing estimate is that it uses a specific term known as squares. Squares are determined by first calculating the area and then dividing it by 100. This number is the number of squares needed to cover your roof.

Like exterior estimations, the inside of your home also has examples of using area and volume to determine costs. In addition to area and volume, you should become familiar with the term linear feet. Linear feet is used when the width of the material is not a factor, for example if you were purchasing an exotic wood board for shelving. The board is sold by the length, so the width of the board is not a consideration. If you need a 5 ft. piece it would be considered 5 linear ft. The same is true for materials that don't change the width of material such as: wire fencing, carpet, or decking.

An induction cooktop heat pots and pans by magnetic induction, instead of thermal conduction from a flame, or an electrical heating element. Using inductive heating while cooking causes the temperature to rapidly increase as a result of the direct heat to the cookware.

Conventional ovens cook food by surrounding it with hot air, while convection ovens are built with a fan placed in the back of the oven to circulate the air. When the convection setting is turned on, the fan in the back blows warm air all around the inside of the oven, promoting rapid and even heating. It is important to know how to make your dishes look as good as they taste. Food's appeal depends a great deal on how it is presented. When eating breakfast, would you prefer to drink orange juice from a carton, or drink it from a tall glass with ice and an appealing garnish like an orange wedge with a mint leaf? What sounds more appetizing, a plain cooked chicken breast on a plate, or a grilled chicken breast on a bed of mixed greens drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing with a side of freshly steamed asparagus and cherry tomatoes?

After an inspection has been completed and the home is considered safe or meets standards ("up to code"), it is up to the resident to maintain the safety of the property. Homeowners can choose to do the work of maintaining safety themselves or hire contractors to do it for them. But before any additional work can be completed on a home, the homeowner must check with the municipality to determine if a permit is needed and an additional inspection is required.

Fire kills over 3,000 and injures 16,000 people each year. Direct property losses due to fire reach almost $12 billion a year. Most of these deaths and losses can be prevented! In 1974 Congress passed the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act to implement public education, research and training efforts to make communities and residents safer.

This gives the family enough time to contact the authorities and get to a secure location. The increased safety provides peace of mind that makes it easier to relax while at home and while away.

Having a home security system advertised through signs on a lawn or window decals is one of the most effective ways to deter most criminals who are looking to burglarize a home or do property damage. They will often prey on homes that do not have an active defense setup and ignore homes that advertise a home security system.

Falls are among the most common of kitchen accidents. Most falls result from spilled food or grease, or unsteady step stools. Do not walk on floors that are wet. Use a sturdy step stool or ladder. Never stand on a box to reach a high place. Wipe up spills immediately. Be sure no sticky or greasy residue remains. Do not use throw rugs. If you must use them, find rugs with nonskid backings. Do not leave objects on the floor where people can trip over them.

Here are a few basic guidelines to follow when working in the kitchen: Knives, sharp appliances and broken glass cause most kitchen cuts. Keep dirty knives next to the sink. Avoid dropping them into a sink full of dishes. Slow is the way to go! Before you ever use a machine, ask an adult to demonstrate how it works. Read the manufacturer's operating manual and learn how to operate, clean and maintain the machine correctly.

Convection: the method of heat transfer where food is heated by the circulation of air or liquid. It could be the hot air circulated by a fan inside an oven or the movement of steam or the motion of boiling water in a pot of water. Radiation: the method of heat transfer where waves of heat or light strike food. There does not need to be physical contact between the heat source and the food being cooked. There are two kinds of radiation heat used in the kitchen, infrared and microwave.

The browning of food, for example, as when the bread is being toasted, is a result of dry-heat cooking. Browning, also known as the Maillard reaction, is a chemical reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars, giving browned foods their complex flavors and aromas that cannot be similarly achieved through moist-heat cooking techniques.

Sauté: A stove top cooking method that utilizes a small amount of fat and relatively high heat to cook foods like chicken and vegetables. Stir-Fry: A stove top cooking method that combines rapid movement (stirring) with very high temperatures; used to prepare fried rice and chicken stir-fry. Pan-Fry: A stove top cooking method, similar to sauteing, that involves browning food in a pan that's about ½ full with hot fat. Chicken and vegetables are commonly pan-fried. Deep-Fat Fry: Sometimes used on foods that are covered in batter or breading like fried chicken and french fries, this method involves submerging foods in hot liquid fat, such as oil.

Ordering food is a daily process for a restaurant owner or manager and it requires that they accurately estimate quantities needed to fulfill the demand. Hot liquids are the leading cause of childhood burns. However, there are things you can do to minimize hazards: Keep a fire extinguisher handy. Turn the pan's handle toward the back of the stove. Lift the lid of a pan away from you so that you are not burned by steam. Do not use dish towels or paper towels near the stove. They can catch fire. If grease catches fire, put baking soda on the fire, cover with a lid or use a fire extinguisher. Water makes a grease or electrical fire worse. Do not carry heavy pots of hot food or boiling water. When working near the stove, do not wear loose-fitting clothing. Do not hang towels, curtains or other flammable materials near the stove. If your clothes should catch on fire, do not panic and run. Drop on the floor and roll over to smother the flames. Repair or throw away frayed cords. Unplug a cord from the outlet before you unplug it from the appliance.
