Flooring is another example of using area to estimate costs. Often times you will see flooring costs displayed as per sq. ft. or sq. yard. In many instances the cost per sq. ft. is a fine way to estimate costs. There are instances where this method can be misleading. Carpet for instance comes in rolls of a specific width. If you have a room that is 16 ft. wide and 20 ft. long the area of the room is 320 sq. ft. If the roll of carpeting is 12 ft. wide and you asked for 320 sq. ft. of carpet they might give you a piece that is 26.67 ft. long. This would not cover your space because carpet must be installed so that each piece runs in the same direction. One option would be to sell you 32 linear ft. or 384 sq. ft., which means that you would have 4 ft. of waste. Not understanding this could cause a large miscalculation.

A typical 1 gallon can of paint will cover roughly 400 sq. ft. of wall surface. However, you will also need to determine if you need multiple coats of paint. It is always best to have more than you need so that you can do touch-ups in the future.

One of the most important things you can do to promote wellness is to wash your hands. In the following activity, you learn and practice the World Health Organization's recommended technique for washing hands.

Culinary Arts simply put is the art of cooking! The word culinary is defined as something related or connected to cooking or kitchens. A culinarian is someone who has studied and continues to study the art of cooking. A culinarian working in a restaurant is commonly known as a cook or chef.Culinary Artists are responsible for skillfully preparing meals that are as appealing to the eye as they are to the palate. Individuals who work in healthcare occupations deal with many different diseases. A disease is any abnormal condition causing a disorder in the structure or function of a human, animal or plant. Some diseases are communicable and require isolation. A communicable disease is spread from one person to another through direct or indirect contact (blood, feces, or other bodily fluids), contact with a contaminated surface, the air, contaminated food or through bites from insects or animals capable of transmitting the disease. Examples of communicable diseases include colds, the flu, food poisoning or measles. Non-communicable diseases are those that cannot be transferred from person to person and include cancer, diabetes, and stroke.

Disease-causing agents are biological pathogens that cause or spread disease. Infectious diseases can be caused by: Bacteria - living microscopic organisms (strep throat, urinary tract infections, tuberculosis) Virus - non-living microscopic organism transferred through living things (colds, flu, HIV, chickenpox, meningitis) Fungi - organisms that get nutrients from other living or dead things (ringworm and athlete's foot) Parasites - microscopic one-celled organisms (Malaria is caused by a tiny parasite transmitted by a mosquito bite. Other parasites may be transmitted to humans from animal feces.)

Click on the following link to learn more about the importance of checking Smoke Alarms. Fire Safety Tips: Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas. Test smoke alarms every month. If they're not working, change the batteries. Put fire extinguishers in kitchens, garages and other rooms that present fire hazards. Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year. If a fire occurs in your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL FOR HELP. Never go back inside for anything or anyone.

Electrical failures or malfunctions are one of the leading causes of house fires each year in the United States, resulting in 450 deaths, nearly 1,500 injuries and more than $1.5 billion in property damage, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Workplace electrical incidents result in another nearly 300 deaths and more than 3,500 injuries every year.It is critical that homeowners have their home electrical system evaluated by a qualified, licensed electrician before installation of any new electrical technology or in conjunction with a significant home renovation.

Natural disasters can happen to anyone, anywhere and at anytime. The geographical area in which you live may determine the type of disaster that is more likely to affect you and your home. Whether it's a severe winter storm, flood, tornado, hurricane, earthquake or other national emergency, being prepared for these conditions and the utility outages that will likely accompany them is very important to the safety of your home and family. The easiest type of preparation for a disaster is to create a family disaster preparedness plan and assemble a kit and have it available at all times. Your kit should be kept in a special place and in a water-and fireproof container to protect it from damage. Here are a few things you should include in your kit in case of an emergency: A three-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day.) A three-day supply of ready to eat canned meats, vegetables, and fruit for each person. A change of clothing and footwear for each person. A first-aid kit that includes any prescription and non-prescription medicines. A battery-powered radio and flashlight and extra batteries. Keep any important documentation in a waterproof, fireproof safe. A credit card, cash, or traveler's checks.

Emergencies, like natural disasters, can happen without any warning and family members may not all be in the same place. How will you communicate with one another if this situation occurs? Creating a family emergency communication plan will help you answer the question of "what if?" before a real emergency actually happens. How will I reach my family members? How will I know if they are safe? Where should I go? Creating a family emergency communication plan involves three steps: Collect: Create a paper copy of the contact information for your family and other important people/offices, such as medical facilities, doctors, schools, or service providers as well as an out-of-town contact person. Share: Everyone in the family should carry a copy of the plan in their backpack, purse or wallet as well as post a copy in a central location in your home, such as your refrigerator or family bulletin board. Practice: Hold regular household meetings as a family to review and practice your plan.

One drawback to the square foot rule is that it doesn't account for labor and material costs in a specific area. In certain parts of the nation, contractors are significantly more expensive.

Factors that affect home maintenance and repair include: Age - New construction will require less maintenance than older homes. Weather - Both cold and hot climates can cause strain on a home's structure. Condition - The older the home, the more impact a previous owner's care (or lack thereof) will impact the home's maintenance needs. Location - Homes located in areas that create environmental stresses, like floodplains, will impact the amount of care and maintenance it needs. Type - The size and construction of a home will affect costs.

The French have a phrase that becomes part of every chef's vocabulary. The term Mise En Place (MEES en PLASS) means "putting in place" or "everything in its place". What does that mean to a chef? It means they don't start cooking until everything is set up and organized including all cooking equipment, utensils and ingredients.

Follow these basics steps when starting a new recipe: Step 1: Read the recipe before you start to cook. Be familiar with all the terms in the recipe. If you are not sure what a term means, look it up. Step 2: Delegate jobs. Who is going to wash and dry the dishes; who is going to clean the counters and the sink? Step 3: Get out all needed tools and equipment. Step 4: Assemble all ingredients and get them ready to use. Wash, chop, cut or complete other pre-preparation as needed. Step 5: Weigh or measure all ingredients. Step 6: Follow the sequence of steps outlined in the recipe.

Pastry Chefs and bakers prepare baked items, pastries and desserts for restaurants, institutions and retail bakery shops.A Chef is typically proficient in a variety of roles but often times specializes in one or more areas. Chefs can achieve a specific title to distinguish their area of expertise. A few examples of these titles include: Saucier - a chef who prepares sauces Poissonnier - a chef who specializes and is responsible for preparing all of the fish dishes in the kitchen Rotisseur - a chef who is in charge of preparing any roasted or braised meats on the menu Grillardin - a chef who is responsible for any foods that must be grilled including meats, poultry, or vegetables Entremetier - a chef who prepares vegetables, soups, starches and eggs Tournant - is the relief cook. Moist heat cooking uses water, liquid or steam to transfer heat to food. Moist heat cooking emphasizes the natural flavors in foods and can be enhanced by using flavored liquids, such as broth or cooking wine as the heat transfer medium during the cooking process. The leftover liquids from the cooking process can be used further to create a sauce or stock.Moist heat methods are especially useful for foods that need softening. Less tender cuts of meat, tough vegetables, such as beans, and dried pasta soften throughout the cooking process. Unfortunately, the softening effect provided by moist heat cooking methods that some foods rely upon, can cause nutrient loss and structural damage if overused.

Each year, thousands of children and adults are killed or injured by accidental poisoning. Many common household products are extremely toxic and should be handled with great care. These products should be kept away from small children and safety devices such as rubber gloves, safety glasses and respirators should be used when these products are used in the home.

Never store a chemical in anything other than its original container. Always keep all chemicals and cleaning products safely locked up or out of the reach of children. Store all chemical and cleaning products away from areas where pets have access. Store chemicals in a dry, cool place away from stoves, heaters and pilot lights. Clearly label or mark all hazardous products when they are stored away. Do not store any chemical or other hazardous products near any food or items used to prepare food.

Nutrition impacts your emotional well-being and your emotional well-being can also impact your nutrition. Being aware of your emotions and the food triggers that go with them is important. Knowing that when you are experiencing certain emotions you may be more likely to overindulge or vice versa is key. Take the emotion stress for example. According to the American Psychological Association, "stress causes your body to seek sugar as quick fuel for a surge of energy." That may be why many people seek out something sweet to eat when they are under a lot of stress. In the short term there may be very little affect on your overall health; however if you are under constant stress it could have a large impact. Recognizing that emotions affect your choices is important and choosing healthier ways to deal with your emotions is key to maintaining wellness.

Sterile techniques include: Thoroughly washing hands prior to handling sterile equipment. Carefully putting on sterile gloves. Checking sterile items and sterile packs carefully for tears, stains, signs of moisture and the date of an autoclave. Carefully pouring solutions into sterile bowls or containers. Carefully removing sterile articles from sterile wraps or commercially prepared sterile supplies. Carefully removing sterile gloves.

Sterile gloves are considered sterile on the outside and contaminated on the inside (the side against the skin). Once placed on the hands, it is important to hold the hands away from the body and above the waist to avoid contamination. Handle only sterile objects while wearing sterile gloves.

Phlebotomists draw blood for tests, transfusions, donations, or research. They may also explain the procedure to patients and assist in the recovery of patients with adverse reactions.

The central sterile services department is an area in medical facilities where workers perform sterilization procedures and other responsibilities on medical devices, equipment and consumables for use in the medical facility. Its functions are typically divided into the following four areas: Decontamination: Decontaminating used surgical instruments and other medical devices. Assembly & Sterile Processing: Assembling clean items and packaging them into appropriate instrument trays and sets. Sterile Storage: Keeping detailed records of items that have been cleaned, sterilized, and stored. Distribution: Stocking and organizing up to date supplies and delivering sterile supplies where they are needed and picking up dirty ones.

Whether you plan to do it yourself or hire a professional, home maintenance and renovations cost money. Depending on the size of the project, there are a number of factors to take into consideration when determining the cost to complete a project. Costs include all of the materials, (which can vary greatly depending on their quality), the tools necessary to complete the project and any labor involved.

Volume and area calculations are used frequently to estimate costs for maintenance and renovation projects. Knowing the area or volume of material needed is the first step in determining costs. The second step is to determine how the materials are sold, by the bag, yard, bucket, etc. and how much a bag, bucket, yard, etc. will cover. Based on how the material is sold you will then need to determine how many units you will need. If a can of paint covers 400 sq. ft. and the room that you want to paint is 300 sq. ft. then 1 can will be enough. You then multiply the cost per unit by the number you need. In the previous example it is a single can times the price per can.

Investing is the act of putting your money to work for you. An investment is made when someone purchases an item now, like a share of stock, in the hopes that it will be worth more in the future. Most commonly, investments are made into the stock market. People may purchase one or more shares, or portions, of a business in the hopes that when they sell their portions in the future, they will be worth more money than they originally spent. Investing in stocks is seen as a higher risk choice, but often it can lead to higher returns, or earnings. Take special care when drying clothes soiled with volatile chemicals. Replace plastic or foil, accordion-type ducting material with a rigid or corrugated semi-rigid metal duct. Turn the dryer off when leaving the home. Make sure that the dryer is plugged into an outlet suitable for its electrical needs.

An estimated 45,200 heating fires in residential buildings are reported to fire departments within the United States each year and cause an estimated 155 deaths, 625 injuries and $351 million in property loss. Although curling up in front of a fire at night sounds nice and relaxing, all types of fireplaces, whether they are wood burning, gas, or electric pose a potential danger in a home.

There are a variety of commonly used basic cooking methods that can be used while cooking. These methods can be divided into three general groups. The groups include: dry heat, moist heat and combination cooking methods. These cooking methods are divided into these three groups because of the way a food is cooked, how much and what type of liquid is used, and the type of heat used during the cooking process. chevron_left PREVIOUS

Dry heat cooking involves the transfer of heat to a food using air or fat, without any added moisture. Typically, dry-heat cooking temperatures need to reach 300°F or higher. Cooking using this method results in foods having a much richer flavor, due to the caramelization and browning process which cannot be attained using moist-heat cooking techniques.

Having a home is a big responsibility. Routine maintenance is an important aspect of maintaining a home's well-being. Regular checks of a home's major systems at the appropriate time of year including its exterior, appliances, heating and cooling systems, plumbing, security and electrical system will not only keep your home looking its best, but prevent future breakdowns and save you money down the road. It's a good idea to create a checklist for monthly and seasonal home maintenance. It's generally ideal to check a system when it's not in use. Springtime for example, is a good time to check your dehumidifier and cooling system in preparation for Summer, and in the Fall, check the humidifier and heating system in preparation for winter.

Many home maintenance technicians use checklists for routine maintenance and repair, however, few homeowners follow this important step. Why do professionals use checklists while homeowners just hope they will remember everything? One answer is professionals know following a detailed procedure saves them time, money, improves quality, and gives them confidence they did everything necessary to complete the job. In construction, it is especially important to confirm the job is complete in order to get paid for your work.Reasons to use a checklist: Organization: Checklists help keep you organized by identifying all of the steps and tasks necessary to complete the job. Motivation: By having all of the tasks and steps identified it is easier to get to action. Productivity: By having a checklist you can complete repetitive tasks quickly and efficiently with fewer mistakes. Delegation: Detailing what must be done makes it easier to transfer the task to another person. By having a checklist, it allows you to quickly identify the tasks that need to be done, motivates you to get them done, and allows you to be more productive by simplifying and delegating the responsibilities. As a homeowner, that means maintenance tasks are more likely to get done with higher quality and less stress. The first step to any home project should be to create a checklist.

When talking about the necessary knives one should have in their kitchen, the truth is, if you have the three following knives, you can pretty much get any food related job done in the kitchen. A Chef's Knife - A multi-purpose knife designed to perform well at many differing kitchen tasks, rather than excelling at any one in particular. It can be used for mincing, slicing, and chopping vegetables, slicing meat, and disjointing large cuts of meat. A Paring Knife - A small knife with a plain edge blade that is ideal for peeling and other small or intricate work (such as deveining a shrimp, removing the seeds from a jalapeño, "skinning" or cutting small garnishes). It is designed to be an all-purpose knife, similar to a chef's knife, except smaller. A Bread Knife - Used for cutting bread and is one of many kitchen knives used by chefs. The serrated blades of bread knives are able to cut soft bread without crushing it.

Rather than planting your index finger on the top of the knife's blade, use the pinch grip technique. For a more firm, concentrated grip, pinch the blade of the knife where it meets the handle with your thumb and index finger. Utilize this grip on any chef's knife to perform the controlled rocking motion used by experienced chefs.

For every one job requiring a master's degree or more, there are two jobs requiring a university degree and seven jobs requiring a one-year certificate or two-year degree.

Standard precautions for all patient care include the following: Perform hand hygiene. Wash hands before, after and during procedures to avoid the transfer of microorganisms to other patients or environments. Use personal protective equipment (PPE). This includes gloves, gowns, masks, eye protection, foot covers and face shields. Ensure appropriate patient placement. Use a private room for a patient who may contaminate the environment or who does not assist in maintaining appropriate hygiene or environmental control. Properly handle, clean and disinfect patient care equipment and instruments and environment. Follow sterilization procedures to maintain a sterile environment. Handle textiles and laundry carefully. Handle, transport and process used linen to avoid the transfer of microorganisms to other patients or environments. Ensure proper handling of needles and other sharps. Prevent injuries while using, cleaning and disposing of used needles or sharps.

The spread of infection happens due to errors and not following standard precautions as outlined above.

The 1% rule says you should set aside one percent of the purchase price of your home each year for ongoing maintenance and repair costs. For example, if a home was purchased for $250,000, then $2,500 should be budgeted each year for regular maintenance and repair expenses. This amount isn't the exact amount that should be spent each year, it may fluctuate from one year to the next based upon the type of repair being done. One year, for example, the cost for maintenance and repair may be higher due to replacing a roof, and the next year cost far less. The goal in the end is to balance the cost out over time.

The square foot rule says you should budget $1 per square foot of your home each year for ongoing maintenance and repair costs. For example, if you own a 2,000 square foot home, then $2,000 should be budgeted each year for regular maintenance and repair expenses. The higher the square feet, the more it will cost to maintain. Remember, just like the 1% rule, take into consideration the long-term annual average.

A valuable function of systems that include cameras and other monitoring devices is that it provides evidence later on if a burglar does attempt or breaks into a home or damage has been done to the property. Security cameras will provide a record of this activity and will improve the chances law enforcement can properly identify and prosecute the guilty party.

There are many companies that provide a wide range of home security systems, but homeowners can also buy home security kits that come equipped with all of the major components including a control panel, alarm, sensors, and detectors that can be either wired or wireless. Instructions for installation are also usually included. Security and Fire Alarm Systems Installers install, program, maintain, or repair security or fire alarm wiring and equipment as well as ensure work done is in accordance with relevant codes.

Home security systems help to monitor the most critical areas of a home in order to detect intruders or other environmental incidents that may otherwise go unnoticed. A home security system can be beneficial for the following reasons: safety, as a deterrent, monitoring and detection, and providing evidence.

Home security systems create a safer environment for the entire family by alerting homeowners if someone has attempted to break in whether they are home, not at home or even while they are sleeping.

Another area estimate is used to calculate shingles on a roof. What is unique about a roofing estimate is that it uses a specific term known as squares. Squares are determined by first calculating the area and then dividing it by 100. This number is the number of squares needed to cover your roof.

Like exterior estimations, the inside of your home also has examples of using area and volume to determine costs. In addition to area and volume, you should become familiar with the term linear feet. Linear feet is used when the width of the material is not a factor, for example if you were purchasing an exotic wood board for shelving. The board is sold by the length, so the width of the board is not a consideration. If you need a 5 ft. piece it would be considered 5 linear ft. The same is true for materials that don't change the width of material such as: wire fencing, carpet, or decking.

An induction cooktop heat pots and pans by magnetic induction, instead of thermal conduction from a flame, or an electrical heating element. Using inductive heating while cooking causes the temperature to rapidly increase as a result of the direct heat to the cookware.

Conventional ovens cook food by surrounding it with hot air, while convection ovens are built with a fan placed in the back of the oven to circulate the air. When the convection setting is turned on, the fan in the back blows warm air all around the inside of the oven, promoting rapid and even heating. Convection cooking has the following advantages: It uses less energy than conventional ovens. It can reduce cooking times by as much as 30%.It decreases the cooking temperature by 25 to 30%.Foods cook more evenly than in either conventional or microwave ovens. chevron_left PREVIOUS

It is important to know how to make your dishes look as good as they taste. Food's appeal depends a great deal on how it is presented. When eating breakfast, would you prefer to drink orange juice from a carton, or drink it from a tall glass with ice and an appealing garnish like an orange wedge with a mint leaf? What sounds more appetizing, a plain cooked chicken breast on a plate, or a grilled chicken breast on a bed of mixed greens drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette dressing with a side of freshly steamed asparagus and cherry tomatoes?

Creating a culinary "work of art" depends upon the food's: Color Shape Size Texture Flavor Appearance Taste Aroma Style Plating You will soon see how all of these help to create a work of art and how simple garnishes are to make, as well as tips for arranging foods creatively

After an inspection has been completed and the home is considered safe or meets standards ("up to code"), it is up to the resident to maintain the safety of the property. Homeowners can choose to do the work of maintaining safety themselves or hire contractors to do it for them. But before any additional work can be completed on a home, the homeowner must check with the municipality to determine if a permit is needed and an additional inspection is required.

Fire kills over 3,000 and injures 16,000 people each year. Direct property losses due to fire reach almost $12 billion a year. Most of these deaths and losses can be prevented! In 1974 Congress passed the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act to implement public education, research and training efforts to make communities and residents safer.

This gives the family enough time to contact the authorities and get to a secure location. The increased safety provides peace of mind that makes it easier to relax while at home and while away.

Having a home security system advertised through signs on a lawn or window decals is one of the most effective ways to deter most criminals who are looking to burglarize a home or do property damage. They will often prey on homes that do not have an active defense setup and ignore homes that advertise a home security system.

Falls are among the most common of kitchen accidents. Most falls result from spilled food or grease, or unsteady step stools. Do not walk on floors that are wet. Use a sturdy step stool or ladder. Never stand on a box to reach a high place. Wipe up spills immediately. Be sure no sticky or greasy residue remains. Do not use throw rugs. If you must use them, find rugs with nonskid backings. Do not leave objects on the floor where people can trip over them.

Here are a few basic guidelines to follow when working in the kitchen: Knives, sharp appliances and broken glass cause most kitchen cuts. Keep dirty knives next to the sink. Avoid dropping them into a sink full of dishes. Slow is the way to go! Before you ever use a machine, ask an adult to demonstrate how it works. Read the manufacturer's operating manual and learn how to operate, clean and maintain the machine correctly.

Here are a few things to remember when cleaning up broken glass. Put on rubber gloves. Sweep up broken glass immediately and put it in a sealed bag. Pick up glass splinters with a damp paper towel and discard it in the sealed bag. Throw away any food that is near the broken glass.

Here are a few basic guidelines to keep in mind when working with knives: Keep knives sharp.Sharp knives are safer than dull knives because less pressure is needed to make the cut. Dull knives are more likely to slip when cutting. Use safe handling procedures.Avoid distractions.Keep your fingertips out of harm's way by curling your fingers under on the hand that's holding what you're cutting. This puts your knuckles, not your fingers, nearest the knife.Carry knives with the blade pointed downwards. Only use knives for their intended purpose.Use the proper type of knife for the job at hand. Keep knives clean.Prevent the spread of bacteria by wiping down each side of a knife's blade with soap and water after every use.Avoid putting a knife into soapy water and leaving it unattended there. Someone could reach into the cloudy water and get cut. Keep knives properly stored.Store knives in a designated location, such as a knife block, away from other kitchen utensils.

A home security system is a complex series of connected parts and procedures. A home's security system is more than just protecting a home from unwanted intruders, it encompasses all precautions used to protect the home. That means protecting it from fire, weather, insects, water damage, as well as protecting the things and individuals inside the home from damage or harm. Components of a home's security system include smoke, carbon monoxide and water detectors, as well as cameras, locks and motion sensors. There are a number of different ways to improve the safety and security of a home and the first is following local building codes. Local inspectors verify compliance with these building codes whenever a structure is built.

Home security systems help to monitor the most critical areas of a home in order to detect intruders or other environmental incidents that may otherwise go unnoticed. A home security system can be beneficial for the following reasons: safety, as a deterrent, monitoring and detection, and providing evidence.

Many garages have chemicals stored in them that could be a source of potential danger. Properly storing chemicals is the first step in prevention. Did you know that storing oily rags in your garage poses a threat of combustion? There are instances every year of home fires starting from rags used for applying linseed oil spontaneously catching fire as they sit in a pile in a hot garage.

Although storing potentially life threatening chemicals is very important, so is disposing of those hazardous substances safely. The first step to keep your home safe is to minimize the overall amount of hazardous materials you purchase or store in your home. The second is to make sure to store them in their original containers so you know exactly what they are and can refer to the directions on the original container for proper disposal. Items in your home or garage that may be hazardous and require specific disposal methods include: Car, boat and other wet-cell batteries Rechargeable batteries Fluorescent bulbs Motor oil Paint Treated lumber Weed killer Paint stripper Household cleaners

A big part of home maintenance and repair is having the know how and basic skills to keep your home safe and secure. Having a home requires you to take responsibility for keeping yourself, your loved ones and possessions safe and secure. One goal of maintaining a home is reducing the need for ongoing maintenance and care. There's a lot of materials and precautions that can be taken to help make a home more low maintenance. However, these methods usually come with a higher upfront cost. Although you may be able to reduce the need for home maintenance, home safety and security is an ongoing process. There are basic preventative measures you can take to minimize your risk. Today, you'll be learning about the things you can do to help keep your home more safe and secure.

Before a home (or dwelling) is ever allowed to be occupied (or have people living in it), it must pass several inspections. The job of a construction and building inspector is to determine the structure's durability and compliance with specifications, building codes, and other regulations. Inspectors, employed by the municipality, may inspect a broad range of structural areas and components, or be skilled in a specific area, such as electrical systems and plumbing.

According to the World Health Organization, "A vaccine is a biological preparation that improves immunity to a particular disease. A vaccine typically contains an agent that resembles a disease-causing microorganism and is often made from weakened or killed forms of the microbe, its toxins or one of its surface proteins. The agent stimulates the body's immune system to recognize the agent as foreign, destroy it, and "remember" it, so that the immune system can more easily recognize and destroy any of these microorganisms that it later encounters."

Bloodborne pathogens are infectious microorganisms in human blood that can cause disease in humans. They are spread when blood or body fluid from an infected person enters the body of another. One example of this type of contact would be a needlestick. A needlestick is the term used when a healthcare provider is accidentally pricked by a needle previously used on a patient. All sharp objects in a healthcare facility pose this same risk and are handled with extreme care. Many bloodborne diseases can be transmitted by means other than needlesticks, including human bites, cuts, abrasions or through the mucous membranes.

Sealing a driveway would be an example of when you would need to use surface area to estimate cost. Sealing a driveway is a simple way to keep it in good condition. Regardless of driveway material the outdoor elements will eventually deteriorate the finish. On asphalt driveways it is recommended to inspect annually for cracks, settling, or surface deterioration. If cracks, low spots, or surface are left untreated, this can lead to more expensive repairs. If you have paver stones or concrete, a general maintenance tip is to use a concrete sealer to preserve the surface finish. In both situations you will need to calculate the area of the driveway.

Keeping mulch in planting areas helps to keep plants healthy and beautiful by reducing weeds and conserving water. Depending on the type of mulch you use the cost will vary significantly. For example; basic wood chips are often a free material offered from the local municipality. If this is the case, you would need a truck, trailer, or another way to transport them to your home. This can be a hassle or not an option at all if you don't have the proper vehicle. Many home improvement stores carry wood chip mulch of specific variety and colors which are considered better quality. It comes in bags and will clearly state the total coverage by volume For example, 3 ft. x 3 ft. x 3 inches deep. This would be a volume calculation. If wanted to have mulch 3 inches deep in all of your landscaping, you would divide your area by the area covered by the bag, 3 x 3, or 9 ft. squared. Measure your area to be landscaped. Then confirm the volume covered by each bag.

It's easy to get carried away when garnishing with sauces. Keep in mind the old saying "less is more" and that a little artistic drizzle can go a long way! The same applies for edible garnishes such as fruits, vegetables and herbs. Most of all, have pride in what you create! Although presentation isn't everything, giving your customers something beautiful to look at and enjoy can be very rewarding!

Many of us would not choose to consume food that looks unappealing. Food that looks good is more appealing to our stomachs. Texture, color, emphasis, garnishes, and other elements can take your plate from drab to fabulous. A good looking plate will satisfy both the palate and the eye. In this activity, you will practice the food plating, presentation, and garnishing skills covered in today's content.

Follow these basics steps when starting a new recipe:Step 1: Read the recipe before you start to cook. Be familiar with all the terms in the recipe. If you are not sure what a term means, look it up.Step 2: Delegate jobs. Who is going to wash and dry the dishes; who is going to clean the counters and the sink?Step 3: Get out all needed tools and equipment.Step 4: Assemble all ingredients and get them ready to use. Wash, chop, cut or complete other pre-preparation as needed.Step 5: Weigh or measure all ingredients.Step 6: Follow the sequence of steps outlined in the recipe.

Often the success of a cooking experience depends on correctly measuring the ingredients in a recipe. A recipe lists exact amounts of each ingredient you need to use. These exact amounts are called measurements. Measurements can be in: grams (g) liters (l) ounces (oz.) cups (c.) teaspoons (tsp.) tablespoons (tbsp.) In order to understand recipes, you need to know the meaning of abbreviations. The chart below shows abbreviations and symbols commonly used in food preparation.

There are a number of ways to organize home maintenance checklists. Here are a few examples of common methods of organizing tasks by season, frequency, or special event. Once a checklist has been developed it is important to update and maintain them to make sure they include all of the insight gained after doing the task as prescribed. Additionally, scheduling a reminder to do the necessary maintenance is an important step in ensuring regularity.

Prepare your home for the winter. Where you live will determine whether or not the items on the checklist are critical factors.Items on your checklist may include: Clean gutters. Inspect storm windows, clean them if needed and seal holes. Have your wood-burning fireplace inspected, cleaned and repaired to prevent chimney fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. Contact a licensed heating contractor to inspect and service your gas heater or furnace to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Your local utility company will often provide this service for free. If you use a hot-water system for heating, drain the expansion tank, check the water pressure, and bleed your radiators. Change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detector.

Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points or HACCP is a systematic preventive approach to food safety that addresses physical, biological and chemical hazards as a means of prevention rather than a finished product inspection. HACCP is used in the food industry to identify potential food hazards so that key actions (known as Critical Control Points) can be taken to eliminate the hazards detected or reduce these risks to a safe level.

Proper food transportation, storage and preservation is key, especially in the food and beverage industry. Food Preservation is the process of treating and handling food to stop or slow down food spoilage and loss of quality while maintaining the food's flavor, texture and nutritional value, thus allowing longer storage time.

Have you ever wondered why someone can prepare a recipe and everyone asks for seconds, while someone else can make the same recipe and no one will take a bite? Why the difference? The answer lies in being able to read the recipe and follow the directions. A test-kitchen cook follows and tests recipes. Some food editors use testers to prepare every recipe as a precaution, in order to spot potential problems with ingredients or wording. Reading a recipe for information is a key part of being successful in the kitchen. Your success depends on how well the recipe is written, as well as your ability to understand what you have read and follow the directions.

Recipes are like road maps for cooking. They give you directions for making a specific dish. Follow recipes carefully so that you don't get lost from start to finish. When you cook, you are making chemical changes in the ingredients you are combining. A recipe is a formula for putting the ingredients together in the proper amounts and by the best method. In the food service industry, where food is prepared in large quantities and to make a profit, standardized recipes are used.

Money pays for the goods and services we need and in some cases, want. Although some needs, such as air, is free, most cost money. Needs are things we must have in order to survive, while wants are things we'd like to have. Making a clear distinction between the two is imperative to making spending decisions. Aim to have excess income to save or invest.

Saving money for a short-or long-term goal is an important aspect of financial literacy. Setting money aside for specific wants can help you to determine which purchases are really important and help you to feel a sense of pride in the item(s) you were able to buy. "Don't save what is left after spending. Spend what is left after saving." - Warren Buffett, American investor and entrepreneur Use the idea of paying yourself first to establish sensible saving habits early in life. Before paying for needs and wants, contribute to your savings funds or you may find yourself tempted to spend extra money elsewhere. A long term commitment to "paying yourself first" can create a cushion that helps to secure your financial future. Some financial professionals call this the golden rule of personal finance. Financial experts encourage people of all ages to begin a separate savings fund, known as an Emergency Fund or Rainy Day Fund. An emergency fund is a reserve account containing enough cash to cover 3 - 6 months of expenses in the case of an unexpected financial emergency. Although you might not quite need to go to this extent at your age, you may still want to begin a savings account for unexpected opportunities that may arise in your life.

It seems simple but locking doors and windows is an effective way to reduce the chance of having your home broken into. When you move into a new home or apartment, the first thing on your checklist should be to have the locks changed. Locksmiths and safe repairers can be hired to rekey your locks onsite so it is different from the previous owner. If you choose to replace the locks yourself, you will want to make sure that the new locks you install fit properly and that they can be set to use the same key as all of your other exterior doors.

Security systems are installed by security and fire alarm systems installers and have options to monitor for a wide range of situations that could threaten the security of your home. The systems will have a line of communication with a monitoring service that can respond if a security risk arises.

Depending on the number of people you are serving, you may need to change the yield of a recipe by cutting it in half or doubling it. To do so, you will need to utilize basic math skills, such as fractions. When changes are made to a recipe's yield and ingredients, it is usually necessary to make additional changes in: the equipment size the equipment shape temperature cooking time

Step 1: Divide the desired yield by the recipe's original yield. The result is called the conversion factor. Step 2: Multiply all recipe ingredients by the conversion factor. Step 3: Change all measurements into logical, manageable amounts. For example:3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon4/3 cup = 1⅓ cup

Food plating is all about presentation and trying to instigate a craving as well as impress the customer. There are five basic elements to follow when plating: Create a Framework: Start by drawing and sketching your ideas to help you visualize your plate. Get inspiration through research or objects around you. Assemble a practice plate to execute the final product. Keep it Simple: Select one ingredient on the plate to focus on and keep in mind spacing when presenting your ingredient. There's nothing more distracting than a plate that looks overly cluttered which only overwhelms the customers in their overall dining experience. Balance the Dish: Experiment with different shapes, color and textures without overdoing it and overwhelming the customer. The presentation of the plate should never overpower the overall experience of the dish. Get the Right Portion Size: Confirm that the plate is not too big or too small and it complements the dish being served with a balanced portion of protein, carbohydrates and vegetables to create a nutritious plate. Highlight the Key Ingredient: Ensure that the main course or main ingredient stands out and takes center stage on the plate.

The classical plating technique uses the three basic food items: starch, vegetables and the main arrangement, typically protein.A simple guide to follow when using the classical style of plating is to think of the plate as the face of a clock. This is commonly known as the Clock It Method. Main: Between 3 to 9 o'clock Starch: Between 9 to 11 o'clock Vegetables: Between 11 to 3 o'clock

If possible, keep a window cracked open while a fire is burning. Be certain the damper or flue is open before starting a fire. Use dry and well-aged wood. Clean out ashes from previous fires. Make sure the area around the fireplace is clear of anything potentially flammable Never leave a fire in the fireplace unattended. Have a certified chimney sweep inspect and clean the chimney annually.

A major concern in any home is the safety of young children. Toddlers and infants are particularly vulnerable to injury from any number of situations in the house. While you may not think something in the home might be dangerous, try to look at it from the view of a small child.

DON'T plug too many devices into one outlet or extension cord. Electrical systems are designed to handle only a certain amount of electricity, plugging in too many devices on one circuit can overload it and be a hazard. Make sure all electric cords are tucked neatly away. Never run wires or leads under carpets where they remain invisible. Besides being a tripping hazard it's hard to see the state of the cables or wires. DON'T yank an electrical cord from the wall. Pay attention to any burnt or frayed wires on appliances. Discard or seek a professional electrician to fix such problems. Keep electrical appliances away from water. Be aware when putting nails or screws in the walls of your home as it could be a potential danger since you may not know what's behind your point of entry. Also take care when digging or excavating outside as you run the risk of cutting live underground wire. Confirm your home's electrical system has a sufficient ground in case of lightning strike.

2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year and cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss. Dryer vents and lint traps should be cleaned regularly to prevent dryer fires. Many building codes have been updated to eliminate plastic dryer vent tubing, however many homes still have it and their residents are unaware of the potential danger. Although having metallic dryer vent tubing can reduce the risk of fire it does not eliminate the need to clean them regularly.

The standard size egg used for recipes is a large egg. To halve an egg, break it, mix it together with a fork and use 2 tablespoons. You may refrigerate the rest and use it in an omelet or scrambled eggs within two days.

A caterer often needs to triple, quadruple or significantly increase a recipe's yield to adequately feed a large number of people in instances like weddings, conferences, or large business meetings. To measure ingredients accurately, it is best practice to measure items in as few measurements as possible. Doing so decreases the chances for miscalculations and other human errors. Take for example when you double a recipe for banana bread. The original recipe calls for 2 tablespoons of walnuts. A quick calculation would indicate that you now need 4 tablespoons of walnuts. What if there was an easier way to measure out those four tablespoons, by let's say using a ¼ measuring cup? Seasoned chefs utilize equivalents to ensure easy, accurate measurements. For example: 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon 8 tablespoons = ½ cup or 4 fluid ounces 16 tablespoons = 1 cup or 8 fluid ounces or ½ pint 1 pint = 2 cups or 16 fluid ounces

Temperatures are not the only important part of avoiding foodborne illnesses. You must also avoid cross contamination which is the transfer of bacteria from one thing to another. For example, if you use a knife to prepare a raw roast then cut carrots for a salad using the same knife, without washing it, you are contaminating the carrots with any bacterium that may have been on the meat. To avoid cross contamination, it is important that you wash all utensils, surfaces, and even your hands before and after handling foods.

A pathogen (or germ) is a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease. The two most common bacterial foodborne pathogens are: Salmonella Escherichia coli (better known as E. coli)

In order to reduce or eliminate the hazards of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, healthcare workers are trained to follow standard precautions and wear Personal Protective Equipment to help protect themselves from exposure to infectious diseases. A primary goal of any healthcare setting is to provide the safest possible care for its patients. The last thing healthcare providers want to do is cause more illness or pain. This can be challenging due to the nature of medical care. Standard precautions are rules developed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control & Prevention) and should be followed anytime a healthcare provider comes into contact with blood or any fluid that may contain blood. Every bodily fluid must be considered a potentially infectious material regardless of a patient's disease or diagnosis.

Foodborne illness, also known as food poisoning, is an illness that results from consuming contaminated food. Approximately every second of every day in the year, someone in the United States is stricken with food poisoning. Other facts about food poisoning include:Most cases of food poisoning are never reported.Approximately 48 million Americans suffer from food poisoning each year.Food poisoning has an annual death toll of 3,000.Foodborne illnesses cost the U.S. economy more than $15.6 BILLION annually.Foodborne illness is almost 100% preventable!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the top five risk factors that are most often responsible for foodborne illness outbreaks are:Improper hot / cold holding temperatures of potentially hazardous foodImproper cooking temperatures of foodDirty and / or contaminated utensils and equipmentPoor employee health and hygieneFood from unsafe sources info_outline Fact

When you think of home security you might think automatically about keeping intruders away and may not be thinking about cybercriminals attacking your home's network. Here are a few tips to reduce the likelihood you would be targeted. Tips to keep your home network secure: Change Your Password - Use strong passwords with your computer, credit, bank, and other important accounts. Be creative when creating a password. Tip: Think of a unique phrase like "I want to see the Eiffel Tower in France" instead of using a single word. The longer the phrase or sentence, the better. Use Security Software - Install anti-virus software, anti-spyware software, and a firewall. Set your preference to update these protections often. Protect against intrusions and infections that can compromise your computer files or passwords by installing security patches for your operating system and other software programs. Don't broadcast your Service Set Identifier (SSID) or "Network Name" - A wireless network can be either hidden or broadcast. If the SSID is broadcast, then anyone can find that network and get on. However, if the SSID is hidden, a user must know the exact SSID to get on that wireless network.

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, healthcare is defined as "the maintaining and restoration of health by the treatment and prevention of disease especially by trained and licensed professionals (as in medicine, dentistry, clinical psychology, and public health)."Simply put, healthcare is the prevention and treatment of illnesses. Health, in general, is an important societal quality. People want a quality of life, therefore they invest in their health both personally and financially. Many factors contribute to one's health including individual behaviors, environmental and societal factors, education, income, genetics and access to healthcare professionals. There are two keys to improving health. One is time, as in the time devoted to health-improving activities such as exercise, nutrition and lifestyle. The other is money. Money invested in health may include routine physical, dental, and eye exams, and the early treatment of illnesses and injury. However, the access to and quality of medical care can also have a significant impact on an individual's health and overall well being.

Medical facilities contain hazardous bloodborne pathogens, radioactive material, potential chemical and drug exposures, and infectious matter, as well as potentially dangerous medical tools and equipment and ergonomic hazards from lifting and performing repetitive tasks. Managing all of these risks to ensure patient and employee safety is the responsibility of individuals in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. These individuals ensure precautions are taken to minimize risks, which includes adherence to law and safety regulations.

An environmental health and safety manager is responsible for the safety of patients, employees, guests, and the facility itself. The work ranges from preventing patient infections to disaster planning. chevron_left PREVIOUS

Whether you are starting your own restaurant, or managing your monthly grocery bill, it is important to know how how much a meal costs. But with so many ingredients in a recipe, it can be difficult to determine the true cost of a recipe per serving. Follow the steps below to determine the cost of a recipe per serving: Step 1: Gather your grocery store receipts and the recipe you'll be using. Step 2: Use your recipe to determine how much of each ingredient is needed. Step 3: Determine the cost of a product for each individual item (1 egg, 1 ounce, ½ cup).Ingredients are not always used in full. You'll need to break down the cost of each ingredient. Restaurants use the following formula:

As Purchased (AP): The purchase price of an item. As Served (AS): The cost of a single serving or usage of that item.Example: 1 Jar of Peanut Butter was purchased for $3.00. The jar contains 2 cups of peanut butter, but your recipe only calls for 1 cup. By dividing 3 dollars by 2, you'll find that the AS for 1 cup of peanut butter is $1.50. Step 4: Complete Step 3 by multiplying or dividing the AP price to determine the AS price for each ingredient. Step 5: Add the cost of each ingredient to determine the total recipe cost. Step 6: Determine the cost per serving by dividing the total recipe cost by the number of servings yielded.

Medicine and healthcare have evolved at a rapid rate over the last 200 years. Consider that bloodletting, the process of draining blood from a patient as a cure, was done on our first president George Washington prior to his death from a throat infection in 1799. It was over 50 years later when germ theory was discovered. Germ theory states that many diseases are caused by the presence and actions of specific microorganisms. This theory remains a guiding principle in medicine today but was virtually unknown at the time. Prior to the 1900s, most medical practice was done in private homes as opposed to the vast facilities we have today. Below is just a glimpse of a few important milestones in medical history so you gain a better understanding of the evolution of health science:1895 - Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen discovers X-rays1901 - Karl Landsteiner introduces the system to classify blood into A, B, AB, and O groups 1920 - Earle Dickson invented the Band-Aid1928 - Sir Alexander Fleming discovers penicillin1945 - First vaccine developed for influenza 1952 - Paul Zoll develops the first cardiac pacemaker1955 - Jonas Salk develops the first polio vaccine1975 - Robert S. Ledley invents CT Scans 1983 - HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is identified2006 - First vaccine to target a cause of cancer

As scientific advancements have led to discoveries about the human body the methods and practices in treating patients have evolved with them. One example of this evolution is the growth of specialization in healthcare. In 1940, 75% of physicians were classified as general practitioners. Today, less than 25% of physicians are classified as general practitioners. This trend in specialization has carried over into all areas of healthcare and has led to a tremendous growth of career options available in the Health Science Career Cluster. This means there are opportunities within a wide range of interests and abilities.

An autoclave is a piece of equipment that uses steam under pressure or gas to sterilize equipment and supplies. It destroys all potentially harmful microorganisms.

Medical Equipment Preparers prepare, sterilize, install, or clean laboratory or healthcare equipment. They may also perform routine laboratory tasks and operate or inspect medical equipment.

Moist heat cooking methods include: Blanch: Food is briefly submerged in boiling water and is then moved to an ice bath to halt the cooking process. This helps foods, like green beans, retain a deep green color. Boil: Food is cooked in a liquid at or above 212°F. When the liquid forms large bubbles that break the surface, it has reached the boiling point. This method is used to cook many types of pasta. Poach: Food is partially or fully submerged in a liquid of 160 - 180°F. Eggs are often poached. Simmer: Foods, like soups and stews, are cooked in a liquid of 180 - 210°F, less heat than a boil but more heat than a poach. Bubbles do not break the surface of the liquid when using this method. Steam: Food is added to a confined space and is cooked by vaporized water. When cooked using this method, foods, such as dumplings and vegetables, do not get brown.

Combination cooking are methods that incorporate both dry and moist heat cooking. The two most important methods are braising and stewing. What these two methods have in common are they both use a slow cooking method that both tenderize and richly enhance the flavor of meat. Braising: Meat is first seared at a high temperature to begin the browning process and to develop a thin crisp crust on the outer side of the meat. Then it's placed in a pot, partially covered by a liquid and covered to slow cook at a lower temperature. This method is great for tough meats and large cuts of poultry. Stewing: Meat is cut into small uniform pieces, seared and then covered entirely by a liquid (water, stock or sauce) and simmered. This method uses smaller cuts of stew meat, pork, or poultry.

Cooking is the process of preparing food by applying heat over a period of time. Heat can be applied or transferred in three specific ways: Conduction: the method of heat transfer where a piece of food is heated through direct contact with a hotter object, for example a hot pan. Convection: the method of heat transfer where food is heated by the circulation of air or liquid. It could be the hot air circulated by a fan inside an oven or the movement of steam or the motion of boiling water in a pot of water. Radiation: the method of heat transfer where waves of heat or light strike food. There does not need to be physical contact between the heat source and the food being cooked. There are two kinds of radiation heat used in the kitchen, infrared and microwave.

The browning of food, for example, as when the bread is being toasted, is a result of dry-heat cooking. Browning, also known as the Maillard reaction, is a chemical reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars, giving browned foods their complex flavors and aromas that cannot be similarly achieved through moist-heat cooking techniques.

Dry heat cooking methods include: Broil: Rapid cooking that uses high heat from a heat source above the food, typically in the oven. Browns food, such as steak, fish, or pork, quickly and evenly. Roast: Cooking foods with a solid structure, such as meat and potatoes, in the oven at a relatively high temperature (400°F and above). Grill: Food is broiled on a grill rack above the heat source, like hot coals or an open flame. This method is often used to cook hamburgers, steaks, and chicken outdoors. Bake: Cooking foods that have little structure initially, such as cakes and cookies, at lower oven temperatures (up to 375°F). Sauté: A stove top cooking method that utilizes a small amount of fat and relatively high heat to cook foods like chicken and vegetables. Stir-Fry: A stove top cooking method that combines rapid movement (stirring) with very high temperatures; used to prepare fried rice and chicken stir-fry. Pan-Fry: A stove top cooking method, similar to sauteing, that involves browning food in a pan that's about ½ full with hot fat. Chicken and vegetables are commonly pan-fried. Deep-Fat Fry: Sometimes used on foods that are covered in batter or breading like fried chicken and french fries, this method involves submerging foods in hot liquid fat, such as oil.

Were you aware that there are more than 250 different healthcare related careers? All have different educational requirements likely varying from state to state. Some high schools have health science technology education programs that prepare students for immediate placement in health-related careers or for additional training/education after graduation. Postsecondary education (after high school) can include training at a career or technical school, community college or university. The career choice, which should be based on individual interest, will determine the education requirements.

Educational requirements will range depending on the career of interest and usually include the following: Associate degree - Awarded by a career/technical school or community college after completion of a prescribed two-year course of study. Bachelor's degree - Awarded by a college or university after a prescribed course of study that usually lasts for four or more years. Master's degree - Awarded by a college or university after completion of one or more years of work beyond a bachelor's degree. Doctoral degree - Awarded by a college or university after completion of two or more years of work beyond a bachelor's or master's degree. Some require four to six years of additional study.

The cost per serving is often referred to as the Portion Cost. Think about what would happen if a food service operation didn't care about cost control. Suppose a local Italian restaurant advertised a lasagna dinner special. An hour after opening, you and a couple of friends arrive to enjoy the special. When you place your order for the lasagna, the waiter informs you that there is only one piece left. You and your friends are upset and ask to speak to the manager. The manager investigates and discovers a recently hired cook has been serving extra-large portions. Portion control can determine whether or not a business stays in business or closes down. A restaurant cannot exist unless there is a team effort to control costs. Restaurants can't afford to guess at food costs. To determine the selling price of a food item, the manager must calculate the cost of each ingredient used in a recipe. The advantage and reason for creating a standard recipe for menu items is to ensure that regardless of who is preparing the dish and when it is served, it will always appear, taste and cost the same.

Ever order extra cheese and then have the waiter inform you there is an up charge? That's because the menu item cost was calculated. What if everyone ordered extra cheese and no one was charged? Ordering food is a daily process for a restaurant owner or manager and it requires that they accurately estimate quantities needed to fulfill the demand. Order too much and there is waste, meaning potential profit going into the dumpster as spoiled food. Order too little and your customer satisfaction, reputation, and ability to meet demand suffers, also leading to lower profits.

When you are exploring career options, you'll need to consider "what is most important to you?" What are your values and how do you achieve satisfaction? Finding career opportunities that utilize your strengths and that you also enjoy doing can be the perfect match. Most students haven't had enough experience to determine what they're good or not good at, or what they enjoy doing. The modules in this lab are focused on creating experiences that help students connect what they're good at with what they enjoy doing in a career setting.

Every student is smart, the trick is finding out "How you are smart" versus "How smart you are." For some students, the answer may be obvious, "I am great at math." Unfortunately, being great at math isn't a career choice. Math is a single subject that is utilized in a wide range of careers. Understanding how you can use your math skills in a career that you find satisfying would be a more important outcome.

Having a designated space to complete your distance learning assignments is important. The activities in these lessons will have you moving around your home, but you should always begin your learning in a designated space. Your workspace should include a place to sit comfortably, write, and charge your computer if necessary.

Everything is more fun when you can share it with others. If you have siblings or someone at your house you can complete the lessons together, recruit them as your helper. Otherwise, consider using technology to work with a partner remotely. A great option is using a video call application to work with a friend.

Bacteria grows most rapidly in the range of temperatures from 40° Fahrenheit to 140° Fahrenheit, known as the Danger Zone. Keep hot foods hot (above 140° Fahrenheit) and cold foods cold (below 40° Fahrenheit) to prevent bacteria growth.

Food poisoning symptoms depend on the type of bacteria and the amount of food that was eaten. Some symptoms of food-borne illness include:upset stomach aching body diarrhea fever nausea vomiting Mild cases of food-borne illness should be treated by:restingdrinking liquids to replace the fluids lost through diarrhea or vomiting Call a doctor or go to the hospital right away if:symptoms are severevictim is very young, old, pregnant or already ill

Your ability to maintain financial wellness across the lifespan begins with financial literacy. Investopedia defines financial literacy as, "the ability to use knowledge and skills to make effective and informed money management decisions." At the most basic level, financial wellness is dependent upon income and expenses. Income is the money you have coming in through work, allowance and gifts, while expenses reflect the money you have going out for needs and wants. Income must be greater than expenses to avoid debt. When your income is greater than your expenses, you have money to save, spend, or invest. What you choose to do with that money is dependent upon your financial literacy. Financial experts suggest using a budget or a spending plan to track income and expenses and set spending goals. Creating a budget can help you:Plan for ExpensesCut Spending: Recording how much money you're spending on certain things can help you cut back.Spend WiselySave for the Future: Identify areas of excess and assign the funds elsewhere.Develop Financial Literacy

Financial decision making generally fits into three broad categories: Spending: Make purchases that satisfy your wants and needs. Saving: Set aside money for future wants and needs. Investing: Purchasing something now in hopes for a higher return in the future.

Even though you aren't reporting to your school or classroom each day, it is still important to have a schedule. To keep the same routine you usually have at school, consider scheduling your learning time to start and end as if you were reporting to class. Set an alarm to signal your start and end time.

Get dressed and ready for distance learning each day as if you were going to school. You wouldn't go to school in your PJs, so don't start by making it a habit.

Careers within the support services pathway are responsible for creating and maintaining the healthcare facility, often referred to as indirect patient care. Every hospital or health care facility functions because of individuals in support services. It is their responsibility to ensure all standards are met in an effort to improve patient care. These areas include administration, the business office, the admissions office, the central sterile services, facility operations, equipment maintenance, and housekeeping. In healthcare, standards are put in place to provide consistency in the quality of patient care, in how the medical facility operates and in keeping patients and employees safe.

Medical and Health Service Managers work to administer, lead and manage healthcare systems, such as medical practices, hospitals, and hospital networks, to ensure smooth operation. These individuals work closely with other healthcare professionals to ensure patients receive the best possible care.

It is a good idea to have a first aid kit in the kitchen and you should know how to provide basic first aid. Check with your local Red Cross to sign up for a First Aid course. You could save a life!

Hot liquids are the leading cause of childhood burns. However, there are things you can do to minimize hazards: Keep a fire extinguisher handy. Turn the pan's handle toward the back of the stove. Lift the lid of a pan away from you so that you are not burned by steam. Do not use dish towels or paper towels near the stove. They can catch fire. If grease catches fire, put baking soda on the fire, cover with a lid or use a fire extinguisher. Water makes a grease or electrical fire worse. Do not carry heavy pots of hot food or boiling water. When working near the stove, do not wear loose-fitting clothing. Do not hang towels, curtains or other flammable materials near the stove. If your clothes should catch on fire, do not panic and run. Drop on the floor and roll over to smother the flames. Repair or throw away frayed cords. Unplug a cord from the outlet before you unplug it from the appliance.

It's important to designate a safe emergency meeting place where your family can go for protection or to reunite.

In case of an emergency, all of the adults in a household should know where the following controls are located and how to turn them off: Heating fuel main shutoff Main electrical fuse/breaker box Main water shutoff Water shutoff valve for toilets, sink faucets, and your washing machine. Keep a wrench nearby each of the vital shutoff valves. Every home should also have a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and in the garage.

Gaining financial independence will rely on your ability to live within your means. That means you need to cover current living expenses, repay loans (vehicle, education, credit), and plan for the future with what you currently make. This can be a very challenging and stressful time. Ensure your debts (school and car loans, as well as rent) are paid on time and in full and begin saving for retirement, even if you've only got a few dollars to spare.

In your adult life, your financial situation and the stressors associated with it may be affected by the following life changes: Marriage: Weddings and engagement rings can be costly. Ensure your plans fit within your budget. After the wedding, be prepared to reevaluate your budget as bank accounts and incomes are combined. Determine how to best prepare for future financial obligations with your spouse. Children: Raising children is expensive. New parents should consider the costs of new household expenses, child care, health insurance and college savings to draft a new baby budget. Home Ownership: Owning a home is a substantial financial commitment. Buy when you're comfortable with your financial situation - be ready to take on the additional costs of home ownership and know you can commit to staying for several years. Retirement: Determine how much money you will need to cover your expenses and lifestyle upon retirement. Ensure you have the funds you need and establish methods for converting your investments into cash. Life Changing Event (Illness / Injury / Job Loss): A major life changing event like a life-threatening illness or injury would undoubtedly cause a change in your financial needs and wants. Ensure you have a plan for unexpected circumstances.

Sterile means "free from any harmful organisms." Maintaining a sterile environment while working with patients in healthcare is critical. Once equipment and supplies have been sterilized by the central sterile services department they are assembled into surgical packs based on what medical procedure they will be used for. For example, sterile packages to change a dressing will be very different from one for conducting an open heart surgery.

Not only is it important to have sterile equipment readily available, so is using correct techniques to ensure an environment and tools remain sterile and to avoid possible contamination. If, at any time, a sterile object touches anything: the floor, another piece of unsterilized equipment, a person's skin, clothing or is exposed to airborne contamination, it is no longer considered sterile.

Throughout the lifespan, there are certain factors that influence a person's overall state of wellness. Read the following information to learn more about the factors that influence nutrition and wellness. Stages of Life: As you age, your definition of wellness and the ability to achieve that ideal evolves. Genetics: Some areas of physical wellness may be impacted by heredity, the genes we receive from our parents. Although our genes can affect our chances of contracting many common diseases such as cancer, osteoporosis, obesity, and heart disease, we can control and should actively contribute to lifestyle factors that prevent illness and improve current and future health. Lifestyle Choices: Make choices and practice healthy habits that positively contribute to maintaining a wellness balance. Support Systems: Relationships with family, friends, peer groups, teachers, coaches, and community members can lift you up or bring you down; surround yourself with individuals who influence you to make positive decisions. Behaviors: Your ability and willingness to positively manage behaviors, like spending, and feelings, such as stress, while actively avoiding risky behaviors contributes to your levels of overall wellness. Access to Resources: Your ability to access people, places, and objects that contribute to your ability to live well. For some this may include a school, church, or library and for others a gym, athletic team, counselor, or volunteer center. Economic Status: Many studies have found correlations between individuals with a lower economic status and various health problems affecting wellness levels. When an individual's priorities include the basic needs such as access to food and clothing, other areas of wellness tend to suffer.

Occupational wellness is about finding enjoyment and satisfaction in your occupational endeavors. Whether you achieve that in school, work, in the community or through volunteering, find satisfaction in something you do everyday that aligns with your own personal values and beliefs. Having a sense of accomplishment and contentment in your work will heighten your sense of purpose and strengthen your overall wellness. chevron_left PREVIOUS

Proper hand washing can prevent the spread of germs to others.

Often the amount a recipe yields and the amount of food you need are not the same. Sometimes you may need more servings than what a recipe yields. At other times, you may need fewer servings. Your math skills and understanding of measurement equivalents will come in handy as you change recipe yields.

Garnishing means to create a decoration or embellishment for something, especially food. To the French, garnishing is known as "garni" and is considered a fine art, like paintings and sculptures. In classical French cooking, garnishes were more than just a decorative item on a plate, they were far more substantial. They were a "trimming" or considered a side dish to the main food item. They were definitely part of the meal, and not something you'd push out of the way to get at the food. Many restaurants that have a reputation for fine food depend on the skills and talents of the chef garde manger or pantry chef. The French word Garde Manger translates to "keeper of the food" and is a cool, well-ventilated area where cold dishes are prepared or stored under refrigeration, such as salads, appetizers and hors d'oeuvres. The quality of ingredients is important in creating garnishes that look as good as they taste. However, the right tools play an important role in creating a garnish. For some garnishes, you need specific tools. You can buy these tools in kitchen specialty stores. Before you can begin, you will need to become familiar with these tools and the techniques for using them to create garnishes.

Rules for garnishing include: Garnishes should be used to enhance the appearance and flavor of the food being served.Garnish color should complement the color of the food.Ensure the temperature of the garnish matches the temperature of the dish. Refrain from using inedible garnishes, such as flowers and citrus peels, on food items. Even though it may make the dish look "better," don't sacrifice the overall flavor of the dish. Garnishes should not add to the overall cost of the dish. A good garde manger will use leftovers and scraps as beautiful, flavorful additions to a dish.

Many modern security systems also monitor environmental conditions within the home such as carbon monoxide, smoke, fire or changes in moisture. This type of detection can help prevent catastrophic and costly damage to a home even if no one is home.

Some security systems will send messages to mobile devices if they detect environmental hazards. This allows homeowners to respond to the issue immediately regardless of their current location or to notify the local fire or police department.

The "support system" of a plate includes the sauce and the garnish and sometimes even the plate itself. Although the main ingredient on the plate should be highlighted, the support system should receive an equal amount of attention. Two things to consider when selecting the right garnish are: Color and Texture: Choose a garnish to enhance the food's color and texture that it will be accompanying. For example, use contrasting colors, like bright-colored garnishings with light-colored foods, or crisp garnishings with soft-textured foods. Size: Select a garnish to complement the presentation; use a large garnish for platters, and a small garnish for a plate.

Using sauces is another way to garnish a plate. A simple way to do this is to use a squeeze bottle or drizzle using a spoon. Some ways of plating sauces are: Lines: drawing parallel or interesting lines draws the eye to a certain point on the plate Droplets: random or patterned drops on the outside of a plate Pools: a pool of sauce; (adding droplets within a pool can make it more interesting) Pulls: a pool with the back of a spoon drawn through; makes it look like a shooting star Brushes: paint the sauce on using a pastry brush Foams: by frothing up liquid using a handheld mixer

Once you have managed the tasks to ensure that a home is safe from potential hazards, the next step is to ensure it is secure. Basic security measures discourage most criminals from targeting your home.

When you think of home security you might think automatically about keeping intruders away and may not be thinking about cyber criminals attacking your home's network. Here are a few tips to reduce the likelihood you would be targeted. Tips to keep your home network secure: Change Your Password - Use strong passwords with your computer, credit, bank, and other important accounts. Be creative when creating a password. Tip: Think of a special phrase and use the first letter of each word as your password. Substitute numbers for some words or letters. For example, "I want to see the Eiffel Tower in France" could become 1W2CtETiF.

The style and location of your home will determine what should be included on your annual home maintenance checklist.Items on your checklist may include: Seal exterior cracks. Touch up exterior paint. Drain the water heater and check pressure valve. Re-caulk showers, tubs and sinks to prevent water damage to walls. Maintain a contract with a pest control company or do it yourself to prevent or eliminate insect infestations such as termites or carpenter ants. Inspect hot water heat system radiators and convectors. Check and clean septic tanks. Check the pressure and expiration date on all fire extinguishers. Check the clothes dryer vent and hose for lint buildup. Clean if necessary to prevent a fire. Contact a roofing professional to check for leaks, loose shingles, or broken tiles. Schedule a chimney cleaning (if you don't use your fireplace very much this can be done every two years.) Get carpets professionally cleaned.

Whether you are leaving a home for a week or several months, there are several things you should consider before locking the door behind you. Many items will depend on the season in which a home will be without inhabitants. Another factor to consider is security and what you can do to reduce your home's risk of being an easy target for theft.Items on your checklist may include: Stop mail service. Ask neighbors to receive packages. Schedule lawn or snow removal services. Lower thermostat or program according to the season. Turn off the water. Remove garbage from cans in the home. Close curtains or blinds. Lock and close all windows and doors.

Now that you understand how to estimate materials needed for the job, you are ready to consider another factor in the cost of doing maintenance or renovations, and that is time. Whether you are doing the project yourself or hiring a contractor, time will be a factor in your cost and convenience. Too often a homeowner underestimates the cost of a project due to misconception of time or tools needed to complete a project the right way. If a professional estimates 5 hours to complete a job, it would likely take the average homeowner double that time at a minimum. This should not be a discouragement, rather it is a realistic estimation. By being realistic, you can accurately determine the cost and timetable for project completion.

Whether you have a specific renovation project in mind, setting aside money in your monthly budget for normal home maintenance and repair jobs is important so you don't find yourself in financial stress. There are two methods to determining the yearly cost of regular maintenance and repair for a home. One method is the 1% rule and the other is the square foot rule.

Saving money can be extremely difficult - it's not easy to consider tackling long-term financial goals when there is uncertainty in your short-term stability. Striving for financial security, or the condition of having the resources to cover expenses today and save for your future, is the goal of financial wellness. Building financial security throughout the lifespan may be the single most important aspect of financial wellness, it may also be the most difficult. Your financial needs can change drastically over the course of your life, from emergency expenses to college tuition, and buying a home to saving for retirement. The pursuit of financial wellness takes discipline and effort. An understanding of the financial situations and stressors you might encounter in life can help you be as prepared as possible to maintain your finance goals and strive to meet new ones. It's possible that your financial future will be impacted by one of the many age-specific financial obligations outlined below:

our basic needs may be met by your caregivers, but you'll need to budget for your wants. You may not have any age-specific financial stressors, but taking an active approach to learning about finances now will better prepare you for the future / near future. Consider budgeting for college and learn more about tuition payment options.
