Phrase

A group of words, without a subject and verb, that acts as one part of speech.

Appositives

A noun or pronoun placed next to another noun or pronoun to identify, rename, or explain it. "Robert Frost wrote the poem '*Birches*'." "My new dog, *Max*, has a pedigree."

Indirect Objects

A noun or pronoun that appears with a direct object and names the person or thing that something is given to or done for. "The clerk sold *me* the wrong size(DO)"

Predicate Nominative

A noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb and renames, identifies, or explains the subject of a sentence. "Jackson became a *superstar*." "The better player is *Tim*."

Direct Object

A noun, pronoun, or group of words acting as a noun that receives the action of a transitive verb. "Mom bought new *curtains* for my bedroom."

Adjective Phrase

A prepositional phrase that modifies a noun or pronoun by telling *what kind* or *which one*. "The woman *with the tan briefcase* is the mayor." "We have always liked the big house *on the hill*."

Adverb Phrase

A prepositional phrase that modifies a verb, adjective, or adverb by pointing out *where, when, in what manner, or to what extent.* "*After the game*, we went *into town*." "Tanya felt good *about her report card*."

Intransitive Verb

An action verb is intransitive if it does not direct action toward someone or something. "Danny *played* well."

Transitive Verb

An action verb is transitive if it directs action toward someone or something. "Angie *played* baseball."

Predicate Adjective

An adjective that follows a linking verb and describes the subject of the sentence. "The pizza smelled(LV) *delicious*." "Harry is always *late*."

Objective Complement

An adjective, noun, or group of words acting as a noun that follows a direct object and describes or renames it. "The gift made me(DO) *happy*." "We chose Paula(DO) *captain*."

Appositive Phrases

An appositive phrase is an appositive with modifiers. "Robert Frost, *a New England poet*, wrote 'Birches'." "The dog, *a standard poodle with a brown coat*, has a pedigree."

Compound Direct Objects

More than one noun, pronoun, or group of words acting as a noun that receives the action of the same transitive verb. "We painted the *walls* and *woodwork*."

Subject Complement

Compound Predicate Adjective

Two or more adjectives that follow a linking verb and describe the subject of the sentence. "The puppy was *hungry* and *dirty*."

Compound Appositives

Two or more appositives or appositive phrases connected by a conjunction and used to identify the same noun or pronoun. "Two cities, * Venice and Genoa*, were great rivals at one time." "Any new car, whether a *small compact or a fancy sport model*, will be an improvement over this one."

Compound Indirect Objects

Two or more nouns or pronouns that appear with a direct object and name the people or things that something is given to or done for. "The cleaner gave the *slacks* and *jacket* special care(DO)."

Compound Predicate Nominative

Two or more nouns or pronouns that follow a linking verb and rename the subject of the sentence. "The new officers are *Kate* and *Tom*."
