What is role acceptance? What are some examples of role acceptance gone wrong?

Role acceptance refers to whether or not the player accepts their role, whether or not they want to play that style of game.

What do we want to target when looking at an intervention?

We can target ambiguity, efficacy, or conflict through the players, the coach, or the group environment

What is a group? How do we define a group?

A group is a set of two or more people with a dedicated purpose, that have some form of consistent interaction

What is a role? Where do roles come from and how are they sent and received by players?

A role within a team refers to the style of play within your position you are expected to play. They are created by the coach/leaders(role senders) and are communicated to the focal player through role pressures. The athlete, in response to these pressure, has a role experience (how they understand and try to fit into the role), which creates a role response (whether they are efficacious, enjoy the role etc, whether they accept the role)

Environment - Contractual obligations to the team increase cohesion. The size of the group also affects cohesion in the sense that smaller groups have more interaction, thus have higher cohesion Personal - How similar are the individuals in the group? As similarity up, cohesion up as they are socially compatible. Personal sacrifices increase team cohesion Leadership - Transformational Leadership can create a clear goal to work towards and increase team cohesion Team performance - As performance goes up, cohesion goes up

Group cohesion refers to the willingness and dedication of the group to stay united to their goal

What is group think? How does group think develop?

Group-think occurs in groups which become too cohesive, have dictator like leadership, suppress freedom of thought, and have mental guards. It leads to a distortion of reality and morality within the group

Individual task - Does the goal(task) of the team fall in line with my own goals Individual Social - Do I like the way the group socializes, do I feel as though the members of the group will fit in with me Group Task - Do I like the way the team stand united towards their goal, are they dedicated Group Social - Do I like the social cohesion of the group, do I like the frequency and how they socialize. Not seeking outside council, feelings of invulnerability, distortion of morality leading to a sense of always being right.

Position is the geographic location of the player within the team

What is role ambiguity? What 4 factors control role ambiguity?

Role ambiguity refers to how clearly the focal player understand how to operate within their role. To understand their role, players need to understand the scope of their role (when and where the role is expected of them), the Behavior that's expected of them, how they will be Evaluated, and the Consequences is they don't perform their role

What is role conflict? What factors con contribute to role conflict?

Role conflict refers to when a focal player is given conflicting roles from more than one source.

What is role efficacy? How can we increase role efficacy?

Role efficacy is separate from self-efficacy or even sport efficacy. It refers to how confident that player is in performing their role

What is status? What trends do we see as status of star athletes changes?

Status refers to the stardom of specific players. The more a player elevates their own status, the lower the cohesion within the group

There are 4 criteria that affect a focal players role response? What are they?

The 4 criteria are Role ambiguity, Role efficacy, Role Conflict, and Role Acceptance

The basic structure of a group is created from two basic sources, what are they?

The group is created from the attributes of its members and from the group environment.

Group cohesion varies along two dimensions, creating 4 unique cohesion factors, what are the two dimensions, what are the 4 factors, and which of these is most important

They vary along task or social, group or individual. Thus we get Group Task, Group Social, Individual Task, Individual Social. The most important factor for group cohesion is social cohesion within the group.

What are the norms of the team? Where do they come from?

The norms of the team are how players are expected to act, what type of integrity they are expected to operate with. These are often shaped by the teams expectations of each other, and are held onto by veterans and passed to new recruits

What is the relationship between cohesion and performance

The relationship between cohesion and performance is bidirectional, such that increasing one increases the other. The effect is more pronounced as performance increases, cohesion increases

What two types of roles exist? What context do they operate within?

There are both formal and informal roles, which operate within the context of the game itself (ie how you play, defensive/offensive) or outside of the game (team clown, team social coordinator)
