Stratified Squamous Epithelium

Is multilayered with flattened (squamous) cells at apical side. Cells next to the basement membrane are often cuboidal/ columnar in shape. Since the upper cells are far from the blood supply in the underling connective tissue, they do not receive nutrients and oxygen so they dehydrate and die. The rapid mitotic state of the basal cells pushes new cells out to replace the dead cells that fall off. In skin, surface cells are filled with the protein keratin that is waterproof and friction resistant. The multiple layers make this tissue ideal for protection, keratinized cells provide extra protection. Is often found covering or lining where high wear and tear is expected; the upper GI, female urethra, and vagina are all lined with non- keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium. Skin is keratinized Stratified Squamous Epithelium.
