"Tomorrow Never Knows" - The Beatles

-From the revolver Album in April 1966, It was consider the first introduction of Psychedelia into the mainstream.

"Good Vibrations" - The Beach Boys

-In 1966, a response to the Beatles "tomorrow...Knows" -Took a lot of money to make, takes listener in a musical trip.

Pink Floyd

"-Formed in 1965, Originally called: The Pink Floyd Sound-->Pink Floyd. (Named after Blue singers Pink Anderson & Floyd Council) -Band Members: Syd Barrett (leader and guitarist), Roger Waters (bassist), Richard Wright (organist), Nick Mason (and drummer). -Initially success: Limited to the London underground, regulars at the UFO Clubs, A Few minor radio friendly hits. -Music: Extended improvisations, (sometimes) dispense w/ core progression and played their instruments in unconventional ways . -Played at "Games for May": described as a space age relaxation for the climax of spring. Band Member made diff sound effects my chopping up wood on the stage, the bubbles used on the show stained all the furniture in the hall--> The Band got banned from playing there again. - "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn": their debut Album -(1967) Sid Barrett: suffered from mental illness--> replaced by friend David Gilmour. -Got a serious of hits in the UK: "A Saucerful of Secrets" ('68), "More" ('69), "Ummagumma" ('69) & "Atom Heart Mother" ('70). -After Album "The Dark Side of the Moon" they achieved success in the US. -Live shows: featured elaborate light shows, preformed for ppl taking acid --> one of the most important bands in the London Psychedelic underground.

- In Summer of 1967, Brian Espine (their manager) Died from an overdoes. (1) Turned into a movie, following the band traveling around the English country side in a bus -early 1968 traveled to India: Study Meditation-> brought a lot of material for next Album (2) Was called that bc the cover: entirely White, w/ nothing else written on it. (3) Was made into an animated movie, a Psychedelic hard day's night. -Paul McCartney- Plan to make a documentary "Get Back" (about the Beatles recording an album) Went Badly , producer George Martin walked out--> Replaced by Phil Spector ( too many arguments --> Project = scratched ) (4) The Band Reunited w/ Martin to record their last Studio Album (5) Resealed a month after the band broke up, The Film and Studio Track from "get back" project --> Used for Let it be

Crosby, Still and Nash (& Young)

-('67) David Crosby Left the Band "The Birds" to join Graham (Vocalist from Hollies) Nash and guitarist Stephen Stills from Buffalo Springfield and sometimes joined by Neil Young (ex- Buffalo Springfield guitarist ). -One of the first American Supergroups of the 70s -"Crosby, Stills, and Nash": Their First album ('69) Huge hit, toured together and recorded other successful records.

Big Brother and the Holding Company

-A California Band that experimented with classical and avant-garde music. -The backed up Vocalist Jonis Joplin -"Cheap Thrills" Band's 2nd Album #1 (1968) Single "Piece of My Heart" rose to #12.

Donovan

-A traditional Folk singer "Catch the Wind" ('65)UK#4 #3 US -He adopted by using electric guitar, base, and drums -Employed Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones (Late members of Led Zeppelin) -Hits in US & UK: "Sunshine Superman"('66) #2 & "Mellow Yellow" #2 "Atlantis": ('69) Based on the story of the lost continent and lost wisdom that might helped rebuild western culture. -He was a leading figure in the hippy passivism movement

Jimi Hendrix

-Born in Seattle Washington, one of the most influential guitarist in Rock history -Played in various of bands (including stints with Little Richard,Tina turner, the Supremes and the Isley Brothers) in early 60s (he served a short term in the Army) -('64) he moved to NY with soul singer: Curtis Knight before forming his own band "Jimi James and the Blue Flames" - ('66) Chas Chandler (Hendric=24yr) (Animals bassist) offered to manage the guitaris @ the "Cafe What?". -In Sept, Chas took him to London to form the "Jimi Hendrix Experience" Band Members: Mitch Mitchell (drumme), and Noel Redding (bassist) -In ('67) he released a cover of "Hey Joe" #6 in UK, followed by "Purple Haze" #3 UK -"Are you Experience": First Album ('67) #5 in US and #2 in UK behind the Beatles ---> Appearance at the Monterey International Pop Festival in the Summer of '67. - ('68) he released "Axis: Bold As Love" #3 US #5 UK, than "Electric Ladyland " #1 US #6 UK & "Smash Hits" ('69) #4 UK #6 US -Woodstock Festival: right before the band broke up, Hendrix experimented w/ blue oriented material. He recorded w/ bands like the Gypsys (he put together): Billi Compsin & Buddy Miles In ('70) they release "Band of Gypsys" -Hendrix died of an overdose on Sept 1970, w/ less than 4 years in the mainstream. -Hendrix experimented w/recording techniques "If 6 was 9" over 5 mins long 3 mins of instrumental music, "1983 a merman I should get to be" 14 mins long, 4 mins of improvisation + Sonic effects.

The Rolling Stones

-By late 1966, Brian Jones: took a back seat & the Jagger-Richards: songwriting partnership began to dominate the band's music. -Their 7th Album: only Jagger-Richards songs -Jagger: present when the Beatles recorded Srg Pepper + Traveled w/ them to Wales to study with the Maharishi later that summer. -The Album "Their Satanic Maj- esties Request" ('67) was their answer to Beatles Album. (Darker version) -The album gained mix reviews- most agree that they came into their own after the stopped trying to measure up to the beatles. -by 1967, original manager: Andrew Oldham was gone, -In '68, the Album "Beggar's Banquet" #5 featured: "Jumpin' Jack Flash" = first indication of this new stylistic orientation (Sympathy for the devil- Jagger adopted the role of Lucifer, their power flower involvement was over). - (1967) "Let it Bleed" Successful album -Summer of 1969 Brian Joens: found dead at the bottom of his pool in England.

The Doors

-Form in ('65) In L.A by singer and lyricist Jim Morrison (Sun of Navy Admirable ) and Ray Manzare (on keyboard). -Band Members: Robbie Krieger (guitarist) and John Densmore (drummer). -Band Name: based on The Book "The door of perception" - First single: "Break on through" Featured grotesque images of Alienation and repression. -First Hit: "Light My Fire" ('67) #1 -Style: Moody, Late 60s, Blues based Psychedelia (Draker aspect of Life) (Opposite of positive side of LSD and Flower Power) -Jim Morrison: Bad boy(Cultivated by elvis & Jagger), often arrested for use of profanity and indecent exposure. -3rd album "Waiting for the Sun" Introduced Jim Morrison alter ego "The Lizard King" --> this Idea later influence performers like David Bowie, Alice Cooper, Peter Gabriel & Madonna. "L.A. Women": 6th and last album ('70), Morrison died under mysterious circumstances in 1971.

Jefferson Airplane

-Formed by singer Marty Balin and guitarist Paul Kantner in mid-1965. Played at a club that Balin owned -Other members of the band: Jorma Kaukonen (guitar), Signe Anderson (vocals), bassist Jack Cassady and drummer Spencer Dryden. -Their success at the club--> Record deal w/ RCA= First Album "Jefferson Airplane Takes Off" Recorded Late 1965 and released in 1966-reached #128 on Billboard -(1966) Anderson = replaced by Grace Slick (Wrote original songs) "White Rabbit" (based on Alice and the wonderland story- implies drug use and mistrust of the older generation) & "Somebody to love" Songs= included in second Album Surrealistic Pillow (1967) #3 American Album Charts -Other Successful Albums: After Bathing at Baxter's (1967), Crown of Creation (1968), the live Bless Its Pointed Little Head ( 1969), and the politically inspired Volunteers (1969) -1972 band split into 2 bands; "Hot Tuna" & "Jefferson Starship"

Cream

-Formed in 1966, build as rock's first supper group. -Band Members: Eric Clapton 21yr (for- merly of the Yardbirds), Jack Bruce 23yr (bassist), and Ginger Baker 28yr (drummer). -Music: Based on Blues but also wrote pop songs Ex: "I Feel Free" & "Strange Brew" -Focused on Virtuosic playing, long extended jam sessions (based on the Yardbirds rave ups) (not complex writing) -Eric Clapton: "Guitar god", helped popularize distortion and the use of a wawa pedled -"Fresh Cream": First album #6 in UK ('67) -"Disraeli Gears" #4 in US ('67) & "Wheels of Fire" ('68) #1 US. -Clapton & Hendrick: Known as individuals (Guitar Hero) -Band stayed together for 2 yrs, (In '68) the band performed a farewell concert in London's Royal Albert Hall. All three members went on to solo careers, Clapton= most successful.

Vanilla Fudge

-Formed in NY, recorded 5 albums between ('66)-('69) -Music: they took simple pop songs and develop them into elaborate lengthy versions example:"You Keep Me Hangin' On" ('67) Original:Supreme song written by Holland-Dozier (2 min), Their version: 5min psychedelic epic with dramatic dynamic shifts and sitar lines.

Altamont Speedway in Livermore

-In ('69) Organized by the Rolling Stones, original Idea:Surprise show at the San Francisco Golden gate Park- thanks the fans, but plans= canceled so they had to relocate in a nearby speedway -Bands:Santana, Jefferson Airplane,The Flying Burrito brothers, Crosby Still Nash and young, The Rolling Stones -Film: Gimme Shelter in 1970 -Festival got out of control: security: motorcycle gang, the Hells Angels, of fans got too close they were beaten. -Jefferson Airplane's Marty Balin was knocked out cold at one point -When Meredith Hunter, an eighteen-year-old black fan, allegedly pulled a gun: he was beaten and stabbed to death(All on Film) -Marked the end of the Hippy Era of the 60s

-In 1965, Beat poet Allen Ginsberg and bookstore owner Barry Miles organize a poetry reading "Poets of the World/Poets of Our Time" drew over 5,000 people—many under the influence of pot or acid -(Sept 1965) Michael Hollingshead: British researchers, (Introduced Leary to LSD) Opened up the world Psychedelic Center in London ---> English Center for Psychedelic music and culture. -Beatle we introduce to Marijuana in 1964, & were taking LSD by spring of 1965. - the Spontaneous Underground at the Marquee Club: (January 1966) Weekly events intended to combine poetry, music, and avant-garde performance art. (similar to the Acid Tests) -The UFO Club: An organization more than a place (Conducted at various venues throughout London.) -The 14-Hour Technicolor Dream : All night event (Fundraiser concert for the underground paper- "The International Times". The band Pink Floyd= Host + other concerts: "Games for May" & "Lovin" --> Pink Floyd = became the greatful dead of London

Monterey International Pop Festival

-June 16-18 ('67) First Major International Rock Festival -Organized by: John Phillips(from the mamas & the Papas) & Lou Adler(Record company executive) -Ppl that attended: 55k-90k -Bands that played: Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, the Byrds, the Mamas and the Papas, the Animals, the Who, and many others played for free, receiving only travel expenses. -The bands that didn't play: The Kinks(got busted and were refuse of work visa), Donavan(refuse of work visa B/c drugs), The Rolling Stones (same reason), Bob Dylan refuse (he was injured), The Beatles (they were no longer performing), Frank Zappa(his Band= too good), The Beach Boys (b/c of Brian mental Illness). -Highly successful- became a model for other Festivals.

Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters

-KK: author of "one flew over the cocos nest" -had parties that played music and drugged everyone up -used LSD (Acid Test- go )

Country Joe and the Fish

-Led by singer-guitarist Joe McDonald who was active on the radical politics of Berkeley California. -The Band Music was both important for the Radicals and Hippies,they were a bridge between the two. -In 1967 they released first album, "Electric Music for the Mind and Body" Similar to the Grateful dead "Anthem of the Sun" -1968 released "-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-to-Die" featuring the song "Fish Cheer" performed Live with the word "****" in the place of Fish at the Woodstock Festival (1969)

"Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" Album- The Beatles

-One of the most important Albums in Rock History -15 weeks as #1 Album in the US, 27 weeks in UK -If was created because after the Album "Revolver" The Band stopped Touring and worked on music that was not meant to be preform live -Initially was going to be based on the band's childhood, but it was dropped after the Singles "Penny Lane" "Strawberry fields" "A day in the Life". -It was Rocks first concept Album (became a model for others to follow) Lyrics were printer inside of the album, used a wide variety of recording technics.

Psychedelia's influence on the Beatle & Beach Boys

-Songs: more complicated, lyrics: more serious topics, Wider range of instrumentation, More complex form. -Made rock go from dance music to Listening music.

The Grateful Dead

Group at the Center of the San Francisco-based psychedelic Scene -band featuring: Jerry Garcia (Guitarist) Background in Folk -In 1965, formed a band "Warlocks" Band members: Ron Pigpen McKernan (Organ, Harmonica), Bob Weir (Guitar), Bill Kreutzmann (drums), and eventually Phil Lesh (bass) And Lyricist Robert Hunter. -Started Playing at a house band for Ken Kesey Acid Test, changed their name. -Their Improvisation style made it problematic to catch their sound on record. Singed w/ MGM in 1966, but parted ways after a few moths w/ no records. -March 19667 they signed w/ Warner Brothers --> released debut Album "The Grateful Dead" = Shorts songs -(1968) 2nd Album "Anthem of the dead" did not solve the problem of how to record a their live act, but it provided an important instance of the band's improvisational bent. technic = Inspired by "Tomorrow Never Knows" -Goal= Intensify the Acid Experience -(1970) "Live Dead" Album was Recorded in front of a group of friends live in the studio, contained a 25min version of "Dark Start" -band later on practiced ahead of time to not take up too many studio hours, Results: 2 successful albums: "American Beauty" & "Working Man's Dead" -On of the most successful Live bands of the 70's & 80s Fans called "Dead Heads", recorded them at the live shows and sold bootleg of the songs.

-('69) 3 days of peace & Music -took place in farmland Bethel, NY - Aug. 15th-17th -400,000 ppl Attended -Organized by: John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfeld and Michael Lang (Organizing problems, they had no experience with that big of festival) -Performers had to be helicoptered in: Jimi Hendrix (headliner highest paid), The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Janis Joplin, the Who, etc

- In ('66) when Bob Dylan was touring England, he had a back up Band: "Haws"---> "The Band" -Members of "The Band": Levon Helm (American Drummer), Robbie Robertson (American guitarist), Rick Danko (bassist), Richard Manuel (pianist) , and Garth Hudson (organist) (all Canadians) -After the motorcycle accident him and the band moved to Woodstock NY -('67) They worked together and The Band release: "Music from Big Pink"Album -Dylan recorded his Album: "John Wesley Harding" both important for country rock.

Iron Butterfly

-Formed in L.A ('66) by Arthur Lee (singer and guitarist ) One of the heaviest bands of the late 60s -2nd Album: "In-a-Gadda-Da-Vida": 17min title track w/ extended organ, guitar,base and drum solos (Model for live Rock shows) lead singer wrote the song when he was drunk "In the garden of eden" -Style: Heavy Metal, would later develop into the early heavy metal music of Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, and even Led Zeppelin

Jonis Joplin

-Left her home (port Arthur Texas) to sign in night clubs in Austin Texas -Got to San Francisco, got involved in a lot of drugs, gave up music, moved back home. -Promoter Chet Helms convinced her to return to San Francisco to join the band "Brother and the Holding Company". -Left band by fall 1969 her Debut Album "I Got Dem Ol' Kozmic Blues Again Mama!" #5 on the US pop Charts -Struggle w/drugs & Alcohol her whole adult life--> found dead at 27 at a hotel of a overdose (1970) -Album "Perl" was released after he death (her most popular release) and became #1 in 1971 Included: "Me and Bobby McGee" also hit the top of the US single charts. -She was a bridge between the world of Psychedelia and American Blues.

Van Morrison

-Singer-songwriter from Ireland -Started Career w/ band called "Them ('64) -('67) he started a solo career, ('68) recorded album "Astral Weeks" mystical song cycle, recorded in 2 days. (he never rehearse w/ the studio band) at the time received mix reviews, but it was an important recording for his career. -('69) "Brown-eye girl" #10 US ('70) Album "Moon dance = first million selling album.

"Simile" - The Beach Boys ---> "Smiley Smile" (Album)

-The band's concept Album: Combination of music, spoken words, sound effects, roleplaying (a teenage Symphony to god) -Missed their deadline (December 1966), Brian kept working on it but abandoned it with over 75% of it done. -Eventually release "Smiley Smile" (1967) went to #41 US (very difference from original) -"Heroes and Villains" was from the original album
