Hormones
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) Where is it released?
-Increases the metabolic rate and body temp. -Stimulates growth in children. Released by the anterior pituitary controlled by the hypothalamus
What does LH do in women?
-Stimulates the formation of the corpus luteum and progesterone secretion. -Induction of ovulation -Stimulation of estradiol and progesterone production by the ovaries.
Aldosterone
-Stimulates the kidney to retain sodium ions and water -constricts blood vessels and helps with fluid in the blood
Epinephrine
-adrenaline -Neurotransmitter secreted by the adrenal medulla in response to stress.
3 classes of hormones
-amino acid derivatives -peptides -steroids Majority are peptides.
Progesterone
-assists in endometrial re-growth -regulate the menstrual cycle -inhibition of FSH and LH release.
angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE)
-converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II -Vasoconstrictor -Stimulates aldosterone release.
Cortisol Where is it released?
-stress hormone -Mobilize glycogen and fat stores while also increasing the consumption of proteins to provide energy during stress. -released by the adrenal cortex in response to ACTH
What is the main type of estrogen found in the body
17-bEstradiol
What are the hormones of the posterior pituitary?
ADH (vasopressin) and oxytocin
Anterior pituitary is also known as
Adenohypophysis -Controlled by tropic hormones from the hypothalamus
The hypothalamus controls the _________, which then controls most of the _______
Anterior pituitary Endocrine system
Oxytoxin
Causes contraction of smooth muscles of uterus during childbirth and release of milk from mammary glands
What stimulates the release of FSH and LH from the anterior pituitary? Where is this hormone released from?
GnRH Hypoyhalamus
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) What secretes it?
GnRH is released from the hypothalamus and stimulates the pituitary to release the gonadotropins: follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH).
What are the type of hormones?
Hydrophillic - Such as peptides and amino acid derivatives. Binds to the cells surface Hydrophobic - Such as steroids binds to receptors inside the cell.
Leutenizing hormone (LH) in men
In men, it acts on interstitial cells to stimulate testosterone production.
The surge of this drug causes ovulation
LH
What induces the follicle to become corpus luteum?
LH
Posterior pituitary is also known as
Neurohypophysis -Controlled by axons from the hypothalamus
What hormone make sure contraction occurs? pos or neg feedback?
Oxytocin Positive feedback
Feedback inhibition by ______ inhibits the production of GnRH, LH, and FSH
Steroids
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
Stimulates the sustenacular cells
ADH
antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin) Causes the kidney to retain water during times of thirst.
Do endocrine glands have ducts?
ductless & secrete hormones directly into surrounding fluid.
Tropic hormones
hormones that regulate other hormones
Prolactin
stimulates milk production
What does Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) do in women?
stimulates the granulose cells to secrete estrogen. stimulates development of egg cells, called ova, which develop in structures called follicles.
Nervous system
•Fast-acting but short term effects. •Neurotransmitters
Endocrine system
•Slow acting but long term effects. •Hormones
