Indirect (reported) speech

"I've already seen this film! I went with Sally to the cinema last Monday", he explained.

He said he'd already seen that film. He explained that he had been to the cinema the previous Monday.

!! "You mustn't tell him the truth!", he told me.

He told me that I mustn't tell him the truth. (MUSTN'T, OUGHT TO, SHOULD, WOULD, COULD, USED TO do not change forms)

"Where is the library?"

He wanted to know where the library is/was.

"Will you please slow down?", I asked him.

I asked him to slow down.

Me: "Did you buy the jacket you wanted?"

I asked whether she had bought the jacket she wanted (or not).

"I can't help you right now, because I'm watching a film."

She said she couldn't help (him/her) at that moment, because she was watching a film.

Me to Karen: "Hurry up!"

I told Karen to hurry up.

Me to Laura: "Don't worry - it'll be fine."

I told Laura not to worry - it would be fine.

Me to dad: "I'll be late."

I told him that I would be late.

"There're some good shops in the town centre."

I told him there are/were some good shops in the town centre.

Jane: "Mum, can I borrow the car?"

Jane asked her mum if she could borrow the car.

John: "I saw the film last week."

John said he'd seen the film the week before.

Peter: "I don't have time to go to the meeting this week."

Peter said he didn't have time to go to the meeting that week.

Ann: "I'd looked everywhere for my wallet before I could find it."

She said she'd looked everywhere for her wallet before she could find it.

"They must do the washing-up tonight."

She said they had to do the washing up that night.

Officials: "Could you open your suitcase, please?"

The officials told me to open my suitcase. / They asked me if I could open my suitcase.

"Don't be late for the exam tomorrow!", the teacher warned us.

The teacher warned us not to be late for the exam the next day.

Tim to Sam: "I'll meet you tomorrow."

Tim said he would meet Sam the next day.
