I told him that I would be late.

"There're some good shops in the town centre."

I told him there are/were some good shops in the town centre.

Jane: "Mum, can I borrow the car?"

Jane asked her mum if she could borrow the car.

John: "I saw the film last week."

John said he'd seen the film the week before.

Peter: "I don't have time to go to the meeting this week."

Peter said he didn't have time to go to the meeting that week.

Ann: "I'd looked everywhere for my wallet before I could find it."

She said she'd looked everywhere for her wallet before she could find it.

"They must do the washing-up tonight."

She said they had to do the washing up that night.

Officials: "Could you open your suitcase, please?"

The officials told me to open my suitcase. / They asked me if I could open my suitcase.

"Don't be late for the exam tomorrow!", the teacher warned us.

The teacher warned us not to be late for the exam the next day.

Tim to Sam: "I'll meet you tomorrow."

Tim said he would meet Sam the next day.

Tom: "Most banks charge interest."

Tom told us that most banks charge interest. (scientific/known FACT)

Tom: "When are you going to arrive?"

Tom wanted to know when we were going to arrive.
