Subscription model

A variable fee based on the number of users or workstations that have access to the application.

Middleware

Additional layer used by Web-based software to communicate with existing systems. Connects dissimilar applications and enables them to communicate and exchange data. Can open more complex security issues that should be addressed.

Horizontal applications

Can be used by many different types of organizations.

Usage model

Charges a variable fee based on the volume of transactions or operations performed by the application. (PAY AS YOU GO)

Payback Analysis

Determines the time taken for an information system to pay for itself through reduced costs and increased benefits

Vertical applications

Developed to handle information requirements for a specific type of business.

User Interface

Enables effective interaction with the application.

Cloud computing (definition)

Online software in which applications and services are accessed and used through an Internet connection.

Fixed fee model

Outsourcing model - Set fee based on a specified level of service and user support

Request for proposal (RFP) vs request for quotation (RFQ)

RFP - describes the company and lists the IT services or products needed, and specifies the features required. RFQ - more specific than an RFP.

Traditional systems development vs web-based system development

Service-oriented architecture (SOA) - a way of engineering systems in which reusable business functionality is provided by services through well-defined interfaces - technically, not software architecture, but an architectural style. TRADITIONAL - Systems design influenced by compatibility issues - Systems designed to run on local and WAN - Systems utilize Internet links and resources - Dev usually follows one: In-house development, purchase of a software package with possible modification, use of outside consultants - Scalability is affected by network limitations and constraints. Web-Based Development - Systems developed and delivered on an Internet-based framework - Treats web as platform rather than communication channel - Web-based systems easily scalable, good with compatibility - Used to CRM, order processing, materials management - Treats software apps as services that are less dependent on desktop resources

Software as a Service (SaaS)

Software development model that hosts an application as a service provided to customers over the internet. Reduces customer's need for software maintenance, operation, and support.

Net Present Value (NPV)

Total value of the benefits minus the total value of the costs.

Outsourcing

Transfer of information systems development, operation, or maintenance to an outside firm.
