A. V - 1 B. V - 2 C. V - 3 D. V - 6 E. V - 4 F. V - 5

11. Describe the procedure in the following illustration.

Defibrillation - a machine that delivers an electroshock to the heart through electrodes placed on the chest wall. Corrects V-tach and V-fib

*Fill in the blanks* 12. The _______wave occurs during the contraction of the atria and shows the beginning of cardiac depolarization.

P

14. The ______ interval is the time from the beginning of atrial contraction to the beginning of ventricular contraction

PR

13. The ______complex shows the contraction of both ventricles and also reflects the completion of cardiac depolarization.

QRS

Describe the electrical conduction of the heart.

Signals arising at the SA node stimulate the atria to contract and travel to the AV nodes. After a delay, the stimulus is conducted through the bundle of His to the Purkinje fibers and the endocardium at the apex of the heart, then finally to the ventricular endocardium.

21. augmented

The electrical activity recorded by the 3 __________ leads is relatively small so the ECG machine amplifies the electrical activity of each to record them on the strip.

20. standard or bipolar

The first 3 leads recorded in an electrocardiogram (ECG) are call the __________ or __________ leads because each lead uses two limb electrodes to record the heart's electrical activity.

10. Name the rhythm shown in the following illustration

asystole

18. ectopic

beat doesn't begin in the sinoatrial node (SA)

3. cardiac arrest

complete cessation of cardiac contractions

6. dyspnea

difficulty breathing

5. defibrillator

fibers that

2. bundle of His

fibers that conduct electrical impulses from the atrioventricular node (AV) to the ventricular myocardium

7. hypertension

high blood pressure in which the diastolic pressure is greater than 90 mm Hg

17. myocardium

medical term for the heart muscle

5. Name the rhythm shown in the following illustration.

normal rhythm

16. ECG paper has horizontal and vertical lines at _____ -mm intervals.

one

15. The T wave indicates ventricular recovery, or __________ of the ventricles.

repolarization

19. palpitations

sensation of the heart racing for pounding

6. Name the rhythm shown in the following illustration.

sinus bradycardia

7. Name the rhythm shown in the following illustration.

sinus tachycardia

8. infarction

tissue that has died because of lack of blood supply

16. ventricles

two lower chambers of the heart

15. atria

two upper chambers of the heart

4. cardioversion

use of electroshock to convert an abnormal cardiac rhythm to a normal one

9. Name the rhythm shown in the following illustration.

ventricular fibrillation V-fib

8. Name the rhythm shown in the following illustration.

ventricular tachycardia monomorphic V-tach
