Up One Level
Clicking this arrow will make the window go back up one level in the hierarchy of the computer.
Back Arrow
Clicking this arrow will move back to the previous page or previous window. If it is gray going back is not an option. Also called Previous Arrow (Button)
Forward Arrow
Clicking this arrow will move forward to the next page or next window. If it is gray going forward is not an option. Also called or Next Arrow (button)
Scroll Arrow
Clicking this arrow will move you down the window.

Menu Bar
The area is made up of menus. Such as File, Edit, View, etc.
Desktop
The entire monitor with all of the icons.
Close
The red box with a white "X" when clicked will close the window.
Short Cut Icons
These icons (pictures) on the computer have an curved arrow. That means they are short-cuts to open a file, a drive or a folder.
Network Drives
These icons have a cable drawn on them to represent the network and are connected to a drive icon. These drives are located elsewhere in the building, but your computer may access them through the network
Folders
These icons help organize related documents or other folders.
Navigation Pane
This area of the window allows you to navigate to different parts of the computer.
Search Box
This area of the window allows you to type in the name of a file or folder that you are looking for.
Task Bar
This bar is usually at the bottom of the windows desktop. It holds the quick launch icons, and the notification area.
Date & Time
This displays the date and time and is in the notification area.
Optical Drive
This drive represents where you input a DVD or a CD
Document Icon
This icon (picture) represents a document or file
Volume
This icon allows you to increase or decrease the volume.
Reload
This icon is usually a curved arrow that will refresh or reload the window. Also called refresh.
Recycle
This icon is where you drag files or folders to delete them. Sometimes referred to as the trash.
Maximize
This icon will make the window as large as possible.
Scroll Box
This is a box or rectangle on the scrol bar that if you drag it up or down will quickly move you around the window..
Hard Disk
This is the secondary storage. It is the hard drive of the computer called Local Disk C or hard drive.
Minimize
This makes the window collapse and go to the task bar at the bottom.
Help Menu
This menu is helpful when you don't know something. You can click on it and ask a question.
Title Bar
This part of the window shows the name or title of the window.
Scroll Bar
This part of the window shows where the scroll box moves up and down.
Address Bar
This shows where on the computer you are. It also looks like the address bar for internet browsers.
Window
When you double-click on a icon or application it opens this "rectangle"
Start Button
Windows 7 has the word "Start". Windows 8 has a symbol for windows. Also referred to as the Start Menu or Windows Menu.
Computer & its Drives
You have to double click to open this to see local C, CD Drive, etc.
Quick Launch Icons
You only need to click one time on these icons to start the application.
