Landforms
Delta
Formed at the mouth of the river, where the river flows into an ocean, sea, estuary, lake, or reservoir, formed from the deposition of the sediment carried by the river
Islands
These are actually the peaks of mountains in the ocean.
Mountains
These are formed when pressure and heat push the earth's surface upward. Many are in the world's oceans.
Plateaus
These are level highlands that have steep slopes that cut them off from higher or lower elevations. Some are created by lava flowing from a volcano. Others form when wind and water wear away the earth.
Valleys
These are lowlands that run between high mountains or hills. They are usually created by the running water of streams and rivers that erode the earths crust.
Volcanoes
These erupt at various times. When this happens, rocks are formed from cooled lava.
Sinkhole
This feature is formed when soil and rock move downward. It can occur naturally due to erosion. It can also occur due to human activities.
Earthquake
This is a geologic event that occurs when tectonic plates are displaced violently.
Lake
This is a natural or man made body of water that can form when a depression of earth fills with water.
Subduction
This is an area where two tectonic plates move towards one another, with one plate sliding underneath the other plate.
Weathering
This is the breaking down of rocks, soils, and minerals through direct contact with the earths atmosphere.
Plate Tectonics
This is the geologic theory where the cooler surface of the earth move slowly over the hotter layer underneath.
Continental Drift
This is the movement of earths continents, relative to each other, due to plate tectonics.
Erosion
This is the movement of soil, mud, and rock due to the downward movement of wind, water, or ice.
