Lost Colony of Roanoke

Queen Elizabeth gave Sir Walter Raleigh the right to claim land in North America. Raleigh sent an expedition to find a good place to settle. His scouts made an enthusiastic report of Roanoke Island, off the coast of present-day North Carolina.

Facts about Roanoke

Roanoke Island is about 8 miles long and 2 miles wide. A bridge was built to Roanoke Island in 2002. It is called the Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge. No one is sure where the colony was located on the island. It is likely that the settlement is currently dead due to food and water shortage.
