Hip Hop

South Bronx was a segregated neighborhood. Poverty and Crime set in as the South Bronx was cut off from services and opportunities. Early DJs and MCs were Jamaican descent. Sound systems allowed for the colonization of public space.

Spawned 7 hit singles, asserted her independence from the Jackson family. 1986. State of the art production using electronic instruments, Complex beat supporting lyrics about taking control of one's life.

Phil Spector

Started as a singer and then shifted to the role of producer and songwriter. Understood the importance of sound of recordings as something other than a documention of live performance and where the real money could be made. Set the template for auteur producer. Called his productions "teenage symphonies". Girls group.

Marvin Gaye

Started at Motown as a songwriter, became one of the label's star performers.

Linda Ronstadt

Started singing folk and country rock in California in the mid-1960s. Grew up listening to country, jazz and mexican music. Toured with the Doors and Neil Young. First femal "arena" rock star, voted top Female pop singer of the 1970s.

West Coast Gangsta Rap

Sub-genre of hip hop that focuses on inner-city gang lifestyle (blatant violence, sex, power, rebellion). Emerged on the West Coast, where artists wanted to make music that reflected their lived experience. Reaction against the "pop rap" that was dominating the charts.
