nutrition chapter 3
What's it called when a food has atleast one-third fewer kilocalories?
According to the FDA, a light or lite food has at least one-third fewer kilocalories or half the fat of the reference food
Can dietary supplements treat, diagnose or cure diseases?
According to the FDA, dietary supplements are not intended to treat, diagnose, cure, or alleviate the effects of diseases
When was the Food Guide Pyramid introduced?
In 1992, the USDA introduced the Food Guide Pyramid
Nutrition Facts Panel
The FDA requires food manufacturers to use a special format, the Nutrition Facts panel, to display information about the energy and nutrient contents of products The Nutrition Facts panel shows the amount of a serving size, in household units, such as ounces or cups, as well as grams, and the number of servings in the entire container
5 major food groups?
grains, protein food, fruits, vegetables, dairy
Products that have more than one ingredient
Products that have more than one ingredient must display a list of the ingredients in descending order according to weight
5/20 rule
The 5-20 rule can show how the food fits into your daily diet. Anything that 5% and below is a poor source of that nutrient. Anything that's 20% and above is a high source, and anything in between is a medium source. Nutrients that you want to get a lot of in your diet like calcium, fiber and protein aim for 20% or higher. Nutrients that you want to get less of like saturated fat, sodium, and maybe carbs you want to get less so aim for 5% or below.
Food Label
1. serving size 2. calories 3. limit these - fat (saturated, trans) sodium, cholesterol 4. get enough of these nutrients -fiber, vitamin A + C, minerals
To obtain important health benefits,
you should spend at least 2.5 hours/week engaging in physical activities that are moderately intense
What does MyPlate promote?
MyPlate can be helpful for planning menus because it promotes food variety, nutritional adequacy, and moderation.
Daily Value (DV)
recommended daily amount of a nutrient; used on food labels to help people see how a food fits into their diet (helps you determine a serving size)
Daily Value benefits
To help consumers evaluate the nutritional content of food products, FDA developed the Daily Values (DVs) for labeling purposes. Compared to the RDAs, the DVs are a more simplified and practical set of nutrient standards. The adult DV for a nutrient is based on a standard diet that supplies 2000 kcal/day. Most nutrients have DVs, including total fat, total carbohydrate, added sugars, fiber, vitamins, and several minerals. When evaluating or planning nutritious menus, your goal is to obtain at least 100% of the DVs for fiber, vitamins, and most minerals each day.
Main items on label must include?
Today, nearly all foods and beverages sold in grocery stores must have labels that provide the product's name, manufacturer's name and address, and amount of product in the package
MyPlate
USDA's interactive Internet dietary and menu planning guide includes a variety of food, nutrition, and physical activity resources for consumers that are based on the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines. MyPlate differs from the Food Guide Pyramid and the MyPyramid Plan in that it no longer has six food groups shown in boxes or stripes within a pyramid. MyPlate focuses on five different food groups: fruits, vegetables, protein foods, grains, and dairy. It is important to note that MyPlate does not have a portion of the plate for "oils." According to the USDA, "oils" is not a food group.10 The government agency, however, notes the need for fat in the diet because some kinds of fat are dietary essentials.
