In your own words, describe a "quality" physical education program. Identify and explain 4 qualities/ characteristics of a quality physical education program.

A quality physical education program is a class where the students are taught not only to do physical activities but how to teach the something about themselves so they can continue to be physically active for a lifetime. Characteristics of a qualitu education would be high rates of success, adaquet equipment and facilities, realistic expectations with limited time, and focused on student learning.

What is meant by the term generic in GLSP classifications? What significance does it have in the "skill them approach?"

By generic it means that the GLSP is a broad in testing the abilities for more than one skill theme. The significance GLSP has on the skill them approach is with it, you can easily test what level the student is at for any skill.

What does "content" and "pedagogy" mean in teaching physical education? Give two examples of each that would help someone who didn't know better understand.

Content - what is being taught. EX: Basketball, Skipping Pedagogy - how to teach EX: being a reflective teacher, planning.

In your own words, what does "establishing an evironment for learning" mean? How does "establishing an environment for learning" differ from "discipline"?

Establishing an environment for learning comes into parts. The teachers job is to already have a plan of the subject matter so that the students are learning properly and the also rules and routines so that the students know what is to be done and how something is suppose to be done so that the students don't get confused.

Why might in be a good idea to videotape the lesson at the beginning of the school year when you teach rules and routines to the children?

I think it might be a good idea to videotape the lesson is to benefit the teacher in becoming a reflective teacher to see what were the problems and how he or she can solve it so it's better for the learning environment for the students.

Learning a spinning kick in taw-kwon-do. The benchmark would be the control they have doing a jumping kick or push kick before doing a spinning kick.

Most preschool and kindergarden studnets are in the precontrol level. The child succession is surprising The ball controls the child The child is awkward and not close to accomplishing the skill.

No, my PE program in elementary school did not reflect the skill them approach. 1. We played games that were physically active, but it was more fun than learning. 2. We meeted 3 times a week and one of those days was running and the other two were games. 3. Our free time wasn't supervised and students could sit out of they wanted. 4. If we learned a new game, we learned those skills that day and rarely revisited them

Why is providing cues an important teaching skills for physical education teachers? What might be the result when a teacher provides no cues or does so ineffectively?

Providiing cues is an important teaching skill because that way the teacher and student knows what should be done with a single word. The result od not having cues could be the tecaher having to explain the directions more than once which is repetitive and time consuming which could lead to a lack of learning and lack in time for the actual activity.

In your own words, what is a reflective teacher? Why is reflective teaching important? List 2 of the variables that your text discusses and tell how each illustrates a need for reflective teaching.

Reflective Teacher - A teacher who understands that all students are and develop differently. This teacher adapts the lesson plans around the student to benefit the learning of the student. Two variables: 1. Class Size - a huge class size will be difficult to include the needs of all the students compared to a smaller sized class. 2. Class Time - Those PE classes meeting more than twice a week will learn more at the end of the year than those PE classes that meet two or less times a week.

In your own words, descibe the skill them approach. Identify 2 reasons for using skill them approach over the traditional method of physical education.

Skill them revolves around using content and pedagogy to focus on giving the students a foundation of basic skills so the student can use it in any task/sport. Two reasons of choosing the skill method would be so that students have a better understanding of all basic skills so the student will be able to learn and like the skill so the student can progress on that skill to become physically active for a long time. This also focuses more on the student in actually learning in PE insteas of just playing games.

Step One: What do I want my students to learn? Step Two: What benchmarks can test what they've learned? Step Three: What content do I need to reach my goal on what I want the students to learn? Step Four: Make day to day lesson plans. Planning day to day can be beneficial because that way the teacher has a foundation of a goal of what is to be done to reach the objective, however, it the thing is with day to day, is that this could always change depending on if the students have reached the objectives planned out by the teacher.

The following vignettes describe inappropriate practices in elementary physical education. First, determine what makes it inappropriate, and then decide how you might make it appropriate. 3. Two classroom teachers ask the PE teacher to take both their classes at once on Fridays for 4 weeks so that they can have have a planning period together. The PE facility is a small multipurpose room. Although Mr. Martin the PE teacher, doesn't know what the project he is told that the reason they are making the request is so that they may work on an interrdisciplinary school project.

The inappropriate actions that was taken place in this situation is that the two teacher left their students to one teacher for four weeks. There is a huge gap of student to teacher ration now being three classes to one teacher. Mr. Martin now has a small facility with maybe not enough equipment. The other teachers also left their students so they are not teaching them either about physical education. In a perfect world, the teacher should say no, however, if the teacher says yes the best thing to do would to take the students outside, so that there would be more space. Then have the two teachers do two PA and switch in the middle of the class.

What is the purpose of the GLSP classification? How are they used? In your own words, explain the difference between 4 generic levels of skill proficiency.

The purpose of GLSP classification is to analyze the current ability of the students in a class, so that the teacher can plan appropriately to the children. After assessing, the abilities shown from the test, the teacher then revolves activities/task appropriate for the students' skill levels. Precontrol Level - control is inconsistent/ succedding is accidental and not intentional. Control Level - responding more accurately with intentions Utilization Level - Move skillfully with unpredictable situations Proficiency Level - movements are effectively used in unpredictable situations.

What are the two major components in the establishment of learning environment , and how do they differ from each other?

The two major components are managerial and instruction. They differ from eachother because managerial is more on the routines and rules of the classroom, while instructional is on the subject matter, both are needed for full learning potential.

Ms. Rader, a third grade classroom teacher, is responsible for teaching PE at least two times a week. One day a week, she plans a number of simple team games for the duration of 30 minutes class time, and on the other day, she gives the children "free time" for thirty minutes, with a selection of equipment available so that they can participate in activities using a variety of manipulative equipment such as balls, hoops, jump ropes, and so forth.

What is inappropriate about these class sessions is that the teacher is not teaching their students about any physical education, only having them do physical activity. With this, there could be many students not even participating and there could be not enough equipment for all the students to play at once. They are not getting the amount of exercise for a healthy lifestyle either. What I would do in this situation is on the first day of the week try to teach the students the basics to a game/sport and make sure that the students have a great understanding instead of throwing them into the game. Then on the second day, we'd either play the game or continue to get gain a better understanding.

The PE teacher, Mrs. Jones, likes basketball and is the assistant basketball coach at the middle school. She spends six weeks each year on a basketball unit with the fourth and fifth grade learners. The unit includes skill drills the first week and then the teams of five playing each other, with the round robin tournament the last week of the unit.

What is inappropriate with this activity would be that the teacher is teaching basketball to the students, then expecting them all to have mastered all the skills to then play competitively. What I would do to make this fit for everyone is have the class into two groups; have one with the better skills play games against other teams, while I have the other portion of the class playing fun basketball games that suits their capabilities.
