planes
coronal plane
(aka frontal plane); separates body from front and back. (Ventral or anterior = front half and dorsal or posterior = back half)
frontal plane
(also coronal plane) passes vertically through the body or organs and produces anterior and posterior sections (frontal sections)
coronal section
a cut along the frontal plane yields a frontal or coronal section view of the inside of the body
sagittal section
a cut along the sagittal plane reveals the sagittal section view of the inside of the body
sagittal plane
a vertical plane that divides the body into unequal left and right portions
transverse plane
crosswise plane that runs parallel to the ground. divides body into top and botton
transverse section
cut along transverse plane gives transverse section view of the body
frontal section
cut made along a lengthwise plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior parts (coronal section)
cross section
cut perpendicular to long axis
horizontal plane
cuts , transverse; refers to a cut that divides the body into superior and inferior portions
median plane
divides body or any of its parts into righ and left portions
longitudinal section
lengthwise cut through any type of specimen
