umbilical region
The centermost region, which includes the umbilicus.
oblique
a diagonally arranged abdominal muscle on either side of the torso; slanting or sloping; not straightforward or direct.
lumbar region
abdominal regions to left and right of umbilical region.
midclavicular line
an imaginary line on the chest that runs vertically through the center of the clavicle.
left lower quadrant
contains part of descending colon, sigmoid colon, left ovary and tube, left ureter, left spermatic cord.
right lower quadrant
contains parts of the small and large intestines, right ovary, right fallopian tube, appendix, right ureter.
left upper quadrant
contains the liver (L lobe), stomach, spleen, part of the pancreas, parts of the small and large intestines.
right upper quadrant
contains the liver (R lobe), gallbladder, part of the pancreas, parts of the small and large intestines..
midsagittal
divides body right and left (down the middle).
horizontal/transverse
divides the body into upper and lower portions; rotation occurs within the horizontal plane.
hypogastric region
inferior to the umbilical region.
inguinal (iliac) region
right and left regions of the lower section of abdomen; inferior to lumbar region.
subcostal line
separates epigastric region from umbilical region.
transtubercular line
transverse line dividing lower abdominopelvic region from the middle.
epigastric region
upper middle region below the sternum.
hypochondriac region
upper right and left region below the cartilage of the ribs that extends over the abdomen.
frontal/coronal
vertical field passing through the body from side to side, dividing the body into anterior and posterior portions.
parasagittal
vertical field running through the body from front to back, dividing the body into unequal left and right sides.
