Franklin Pierce - Pierce was president during the growing storm of sectionalism that would eventually lead to the Civil War. It was during his presidency that the Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed.

James K. Polk - Some consider Polk to be the best one term president. He was known as a dark horse candidate.

James Madison -pres. during what the second war of independence: the War of 1812.

5th (1817-1825)

James Monroe - pres. during "Era of Good Feelings," yet it was during his time in office that the fateful Missouri Compromise was reached.

2nd (1797-1801)

John Adams- (federalist) Adams only served one term but had a huge impact during America's foundational years.

6th (1825-1829)

John Quincy Adams- was the son of the second president. His election in 1824 was a point of contention due to the "Corrupt Bargain"

10th (1841-1845)

John Tyler- (whig) became the first vice president to succeed to the presidency upon the death of the William Henry Harrison.

8th (1837-1841)

Martin Van Buren- only served one term as president. A depression began during his presidency that lasted from 1837-1845.

13th (1850-1853)

Millard Fillmore- (whig) Fillmore became president upon Zachary Taylor's death. His support of the Compromise of 1850 caused him his party's nomination for reelection in 1852.

3rd (1801-1809)

Thomas Jefferson -Jefferson was a staunch anti-federalist who just happened to increase the size and power of the federal government when he completed the Louisiana Purchase with France.

18th (1869-1877)

Ulysses Grant-

9th (1841)

William Henry Harrison- (whig) Known as the hero of Tippecanoe, Harrison died after only one month in office.

12th (1849-1850)

Zachary Taylor- (whig)Taylor, nicknamed "Old Rough and Ready," was president when the Compromise of 1850 came about. However, he died in office before it was enacted.
