-it is subjective -man propels himself towards a future and is intentionally conscious of what he is doing -each man chooses for himself the life he wants to lead -each man creates their own essence

What is a being in-itself?

-objects -thing we experience (trees)

"essence precedes existence"

-production precedes existence ex: -Artisan makes scissors with a preconceived idea of what its purpose will be -god creates man with a preconceived conception of man's existence

What is despair?

-relying only on our own efforts -when I choose, I choose for all -reliance upon that which is within our wills

What is the significance of abandonment, despair, and anguish?

-shows that man is completely in charge of his own choices and subsequent consequences -there are no excuses -even when man choses not to act, he is still choosing

What is a facticity? example....

-the part of a person that already has an essence -what a human being has established up until now ex: I am a writer or I have lived in 10 states

What is Transcendence?

-the part of a person who will create his or her future/potential essence -ex: I am becoming a writer/actor/singer

What is abandonment?

-the realization that god does not exist -leaves man without an excuse for deciding their existence -we ourselves decide our being

Why are human beings different from one another?

-we are transcended from the same essence but... -everything is changing which creates our own facticities
