Sartre
What is a being for-itself?
-Humans -the being of consciousness
What equals a human's essence?
-Transcendent ego (underlying human thought) and facticity
What is the final option for avoiding anguish?
-accept that you are free -decisions you make are your own - one is completely responsible for one's own choices
"existence precedes essence"
-atheistic existentialism -if god does not exists there must be at least one being whose existence comes before its essence -man exists and surges up int the world and then defines himself afterwards -man will be what he makes of himself
What is anguish?
-consciousness of our freedom -our existential realization of what we could choose and that we must choose from these possibilities
Sartre's belief on essence in relation to humans.
-for Sartre there is no static essence for humans -we all have individual uniqueness (weather it be part of our essence established up until now or what we create in the future) -we all must chose our own way
What does Sartre conclude about the meaning of life?
-it is subjective -man propels himself towards a future and is intentionally conscious of what he is doing -each man chooses for himself the life he wants to lead -each man creates their own essence
What is a being in-itself?
-objects -thing we experience (trees)
"essence precedes existence"
-production precedes existence ex: -Artisan makes scissors with a preconceived idea of what its purpose will be -god creates man with a preconceived conception of man's existence
What is despair?
-relying only on our own efforts -when I choose, I choose for all -reliance upon that which is within our wills
What is the significance of abandonment, despair, and anguish?
-shows that man is completely in charge of his own choices and subsequent consequences -there are no excuses -even when man choses not to act, he is still choosing
What is a facticity? example....
-the part of a person that already has an essence -what a human being has established up until now ex: I am a writer or I have lived in 10 states
What is Transcendence?
-the part of a person who will create his or her future/potential essence -ex: I am becoming a writer/actor/singer
What is abandonment?
-the realization that god does not exist -leaves man without an excuse for deciding their existence -we ourselves decide our being
Why are human beings different from one another?
-we are transcended from the same essence but... -everything is changing which creates our own facticities
What is the order of the paragraphs...
1. Define meaning and proposal 2. intentional consciousness ("E/existence, in-for itself) 3. two types of existentialists 4. essence / facticity / transcendence 5. abandonment / despair / anguish 6. conclusion (subjective / objective)

What is intentionality/ intentional consciousness

What are the two types of existentialist?
