Patients who are confused, disorientated or repeatedly fall or try to remove medical devices often require temporary use of restraints to keep them safe. Restraint alternatives include more frequent observations, involvement of family during visitation, frequent reorientation, and the introduction of meaningful stimuli. A physician's order is required, based on a face-to-face assessment of the patient. The order must be current, state state the type and location of the restraint, specify the duration and circumstances under which which it will be used. These orders need to be renewed with a specific time frame according to policy of the agency. In the hospital, each individual restraint order and renewal is limited to 4 HOURS FOR ADULTS, 2 HOURS FOR AGES 9-17, 1 HOUR FOR CHILDREN UNDER AGE 9.
