(Social) Self-affirmation theory
(Limitations of SA) Name a limitation
Steele et al.'s study is not very ecologically valid/generalisable
Main citation + date
Steele, 1988
What does the theory argue? Who summarised this?
That consistency is not the main motivation for changing behaviour/attitudes, instead it argues that it is a setback to your self-concept/self-image/identity that motivates this (Chadee, 2011)
(Support for SA) What did Steele et al. say, as cited by Chadee, 2011? Date?
When people had self-focus, this caused them to reflect on their self-image, so those with low self-esteem rationalised their choice between 2 similarly priced CDs more than those with high self-esteem, as they didn't need to rationalise/find consistency due to high SA (1993)
