Subcutaneous Layer
blood reservoir
A description of the skin due to the venous circulation of the subcutaneous layer which contains a substantial amount of blood. Much of this volume will shift to the general circulation if the veins constrict in the superficial subcutaneous layer.
adipose tissue
A type of tissue composed of areolar tissue (loose connective tissue with an open framework) dominated by adipocytes.
subcutaneous layer (hypodermis)
An elastic layer of adipose tissue that lies deep to the dermis. Important in stabilizing the position of the skin in relation to underlying tissues while permitting independent movement.
subcutaneous injection
An injection by means of a hypodermic needle used to administer drugs into the subcutaneous layer.
central adiposity
Refers to an excessive amount of abdominal fat. Strongly connected with cardiovascular disease.
subcutaneous fat
Refers to the adipose tissue that makes up the subcutaneous layer. Makes up about 80% of all body fat.
