His story was probably fictious but it was publicised highly and subject to books, songs, plays, poems, operas and six biographies. Victim of theatrical repression, tried to create and innvovative style of theatre (breaking down barriers between audience and actors by using lights and sounds and unusual staging) he had a major influence on European and American acting technique. His belief that theatre was an evolving creative thing and needed freedom led to him being imprisoned and killed 1940
