The Schlieffan Plan

In 1905 France had Alliances with Britain and Russia. Germany had alliances with Austria and Italy, but was starting to feel "encircled". So Germany drew up the "Schlieffan plan". This argued that because Russia and France were allies, war with either one of them would mean war with both. So, if Germany found herself at war with either one of them, she should move like lightning: first, defeat the French by sending her army throught Belgium, then unleash th whole German army on Russia. In this way, the Germans could avoid the nightmare of a "war on two fronts".

The British weren't having a good time fighting against the Germans who were very strong.The British were using out dated techniques used in previous wars. WW1 was the beginning of the use of machine guns and bombs. Due to these weapons coming into the War, fighting was a lot more gruesome therefore leading to the British needing for more recruits.
