Tragedy of the commons
What is an example of a resource that doesn't satisfy the description? And why?
Iron in the earths core. It is not accessible to all people and will not be destroyed.
Does the tragedy always always follow people who are greedy? Why or why not and an example?
No. Because we also breath air because we want to live--- finite
What usually accommodates any activity on the ecosystem? What will eventually happen?
The equilibrium of the ecosystem. If it isn't practiced by a small population, continuous growth will eventually exceed the capacity of the ecosystem to sustain that organism.
What does "held in common" mean?
The resource is owned by more than one person.
What must the resources be in order to qualify for this description?
The resource must be available for all use.
How do we avoid the tragedy?
By altering our values, and changing the way we live.
Who were the people that created the concept that water, air and fish were held in common for all use?
By the Romans. (Codex justianianus)
What are examples of common resources? And explain a tragedy for each one?
Air-- pollution Water (oceans, rivers)-- pollution also Fish-- over fishing
What is happening for the first time on a global scale?
Human beings are exceeding the land and resource use that the earth's biosphere can sustain.
What is the tragedy of the commons?
If a resource is held in common for use by all then ultimately that resource will be destroyed.
Is the earth finite or infinite? Give examples?
It is finite. Limited renewable fuels, minerals, and energy from the sun.
What happens when a greater number of people use the resource?
The faster it will get destroyed.
What is the time interval of the resource tied to?
The growth of the population.
What is the tragedy of the commons directly tied to?
To OVER population.
