Can you describe the Engagement and Support tools in Elsevier's Transition to Practice?

The Engagement and Support Tools in Elsevier's Transition to Practice include an end-of-shift survey, and an electronic journaling feature, both designed to open a virtual line of communication between your new nurses and their preceptors. The end-of-shift survey is a great tool for both the learner and preceptor, because the questions are written with the intention to cast light on any struggles they are having, which is imperative for your preceptors to be aware of early on. While Transition to Practice is a web-based solution, these tools are mobile optimized and can be accessed via a web page on one's mobile device. Both tools are a great way to really break down any communication barriers between new nurse residents and their supervisors.

Describe the end of shift survey.

The end of shift survey is a really great feature of Transition to Practice because it prompts the nurse to answer questions about their feelings of support, confidence, and overall level of satisfaction in their workflow. These questions are designed to help you as a preceptor better understand who your at risk nurses are, and inspire you to intervene with those individuals before they are choosing to leave the program and are beyond reach.

Can you describe the Actionable Insights in Elsevier's Transition to Practice?

The Actionable Insights within Transition to Practice are really designed to help your preceptor's and educators get a bird's eye view of learner performance on an individual and cohort level. These are all of the reports you'll receive like end of shift surveys, learner performance within the professional skills curriculum and CE's earned, you can view time spent, read survey responses, and see both individual and group performance trends. Altogether these reports and survey responses are giving you the insight on who is struggling or in need of additional support, so you can take the necessary actions and intervene.

Each lesson has a sidebar of resources including a link to the lesson abstract, objectives, and instructions, references, a full user guide with instructions for claiming CE's, complete lessons and post-tests, navigate through the platform in its entirety, and contains system requirements. One cool feature is the EHR tab on the lefthand side of the simulation, where nurses can make their notes as they interact with the activity. Another is the Handoff Report, where the learner can access background information on their virtual patient that would have been left for them in a real clinical environment.

Describe Transition to Practice.

Elsevier's Transition to Practice Professional Skills include a standardized professional skill curriculum, designed to educate and empower your new nurse graduates by focusing on topics that align to the ANA standards for professional performance in nursing practice. There are seven modules and 21 lessons total within, that guide your nurses on how to hone their professional skills with an immersive, simulated eLearning experience, where they'll practice critical professional scenarios they might come across in their first 12-18 months of practice. There are 15.75 CE's available, and two additional features on top of the modules and lessons that I'll go into as well. The first being your Engagement and Support Tools. There is an electronic journaling feature and end-of-shift survey embedded within the platform that gives your new nurses a safe space to share their thoughts and experiences as they move through their orientation. There was a study that came out not too long ago, stating that on average, 1 in every 4 nurses leave their organizations within their first year of practice. So we've included these engagement and support tools in the hopes that by having an open line of web-based communication, your nurse educators will be able to better visualize and intervene with any new nurses who are struggling. The second thing I want to touch on is the Actionable Insights. These are really for the educators, and its all of those reports on lesson performance, end-of-shift surveys, electronic journaling submissions, with individual and cohort views that allow you to compare learners' performance. This is a great way to see how your nurses are doing as a group and how they're doing one on one.

What are the four design methods to lesson content and delivery in Elsevier's Transition to Practice? Can you describe them?

Lesson activities can be in the form of a simulation exercise, interactive videos, interactive games, or graphic novels. Simulations and interactive videos are essentially designed to provide a virtual space for your nurses to interact with patients in a clinical setting. I did a simulation exercise myself in the communication module and something I thought was really neat was the EHR feature on the lefthand side of the screen, where the learner can document notes into a patient record as they move through the exercise. The interactive games vary, but one example would be what can I do, delegate, and delay, where the user will read through an excerpt about a situation they might be faced with in a clinical setting, and select from a list of options on what they can do, delegate, and delay under the given set of circumstances. Graphic novels are another form of virtual interaction within a clinical setting, where the user will navigate through different areas of a clinical scene and address situational questions as they go. This is all much easier to digest when you're looking at it, so we can certainly schedule a full product demonstration and begin the clinical trial phase following this call.

Does Transition to Practice come with a mobile application?

No, Transition to Practice does not currently have a mobile application. However, you can access it on the go by logging in through a web browser from your phone or tablet.

What value does Elsevier's Transition to Practice provide to an organization?

On the matter of recruiting and retention, one thing we have found is that on average, 1 in every 4 new nurses will leave their organization within their first year of professional practice. Elsevier's Transition to Practice was designed with the goal to help improve that figure, whatever it may be within your organization, by helping those new nurses to feel prepared and supported in that critical first year and a half of residency. By allowing them to practice in the virtual environment provided within our program, not only would we hope to see an overall boost in confidence, but also new nurse preparedness, which then has the potential to translate to better patient outcomes. This is the goal of the program, retention, confidence, professionalism, and preparedness, all areas that can offer great benefits to the organization as a whole.

On the upper right hand side of the home screen is a small question mark, where users can access Elsevier's Transition to Practice Support Hub. Additionally, we do have a technical support team that you can reach out to for guidance as well.

Administrators are able to access the Reports, People Management and System Management tools via a mobile device.

What are the three major components to Elsevier's Transition to Practice?

Transition to Practice is delivered in three parts - Professional Skills, Engagement and Support Tools, and Actionable Insights. The Professional Skills piece is the education being delivered, so these are all of those 21 lessons within the 7 modules that are offered in Transition to Practice. Engagement and Support Tools are in place to bridge the gap of communication between your new nurses and their preceptors. This is the end-of-shift survey, which is a guided survey for each of your nurses to share their experience on the job. It offers great insight into which nurses are experiencing feelings of low confidence or who are in need of additional support. The same goes for the second feature within Engagement and Support which is the electronic journaling tool. This provides more of an open ended space for nurses to share their thoughts and questions in a virtual space. Lastly, Actionable Insights. These are all of those learner and cohort reports designed to give your preceptors an overall and comparative view of learner performance. So what progress have they made within the curriculum, their CE's earned, end of shift survey submissions and cohort trends.

Is Transition to Practice seat-based or unlimited?

Unlimited

Describe what it's like to click to the lessons and modules Transition to Practice. / Paint a visual for the customer.

When you log in on the platform as a learner, your home screen will have the option to navigate to either submit a reflection, or enter into the learning modules. Once they select the "Professional Skills" option, this will take them to a new screen with all seven modules they can select from to start taking lessons within. Once the learner enters into a module, they are taken to a screen with that module's lesson titles along with an approximation of time the learner will spend taking each lesson, along with a brief summary of the module in its entirety placed above the lesson titles. Each lesson will open up to a lesson abstract and a list of lesson objectives. Each lesson is designed to keep your nurses engaged, so they are either going through a simulation based activity, watching an interactive video, playing an interactive game, or clicking and reading through what we've called a graphic novel. And this basically looks like a still picture to start, where the learner will click on pop-up conversation bubbles and excerpts to navigate and learn within different areas of the scenario being depicted. By the way all of this is far easier to envision during the product presentation, which we can definitely schedule for you and your colleagues following today's meeting, in addition to a free trial if you're interested.
