What type of LTM memory do episodic and semantic memory belong to?

explicit (declarative) LTM.

What are the two types of long term memory?

explicit (declarative) and implicit.

Define procedural memory

is skilled based memory and focuses on recalling how to do a specific action i.e how to ride a bike and it does not require conscious thought.

Why are we less aware of procedural memories?

Because they become automatic.

What three elements do episodic memories have?

Specific details of the event, the context and the emotion.

Why do episodic memories become semantic memories?

Episodic memories slowly lose their association with particular events and gradually transitions into semantic memory because it becomes generalised and so the memory is now knowledge based.

What type of LTM does procedural memory belong to?

Implicit.

What is the distinction between explicit memory and implicit memory?

It is the distinction between knowing that and how.

Define episodic memory

Personal experiences and recollection of an individual such as their first day of school or a family holiday. This type of memory often has contextual detail and emotional tone.

Define semantic memory

Semantic memories- contain knowledge concerning facts, concepts and meanings the individual has learnt. For example, knowing that the capital of France is Paris.

What does semantic memory also relate to?

Semantic memory may also relate to how certain objects work, their functions, appropriate behaviour in certain situations or abstract concepts such as mathematics or language.

How are procedural memories acquired?

Through repetition and practice.
