Read the following paragraph from John Muir's "The Calypso Borealis" and pay close attention to the words in bold. In one paragraph of three to five sentences, explain Muir's use of diction and the mood his choice of words creates. Use proper spelling and grammar in your response. But when the sun was getting low and everything seemed most bewildering and discouraging, I found beautiful Calypso on the mossy bank of a stream, growing not in the ground but on a bed of yellow mosses in which its small white bulb had found a soft nest and from which its one leaf and one flower sprung. The flower was white and made the impression of the utmost simple purity like a snowflower. No other bloom was near it, for the bog a short distance below the surface was still frozen, and the water was ice cold. It seemed the most spiritual of all the flower people I had ever met. I sat down beside it and fairly cried for joy. (25 points) Your Answer:
Muir's use of diction creates a mood of urgency and fear. The highlighted words - difficult, difficult, force, crooked, struggling, tangled, fallen, fear, faint and hungry - come together to make you feel that the author is in danger. The imagery is clear so that it comes alive in your mind. Diction can help create a mood which can help bring everything else together.
I wandered lonely as a cloudThat floats on high o'er vales and hills,When all at once I saw a crowd,A host, of golden daffodils;Beside the lake, beneath the trees,Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shineAnd twinkle on the milky way,They stretched in never-ending lineAlong the margin of a bay:Ten thousand saw I at a glance,Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced; but theyOut-did the sparkling waves in glee:A poet could not but be gay,In such a jocund company:I gazed—and gazed—but little thoughtWhat wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lieIn vacant or in pensive mood,They flash upon that inward eyeWhich is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills,And dances with the daffodils. Select a stanza from this poem and explain the tone Wordsworth creates in the stanza. Give your explanation in at least one paragraph of three to five sentences. Use examples from the stanza to support your observations. Use proper spelling and grammar. (10 points) Your Answer:
The Beginning of the stanza has a negative connotation and does so by using the phrase, "when on my couch I lie in vacant or in pensive mood." However, the author switches the diction to later have a positive connotation as reflected in the phrase," my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils

It makes the writer/author seem elementary in their writing, which wouldn't fit in this poem as it's a high level poem that can be used for scholarly analysis.
