(Alternative, 1980) • American rock band; favorites of the local underground rock scene; by the late 1980s the band begun to bring alternative into the mainstream; solidified the difference between post punk and alternative music; popular through the 1990s • elements: bright tempo, clean rhythm, lean sound, little electronic accompaniment, ambiguous lyrics, sudden contrasts between verses and choruses (feature of alternative music) - responsible for starting the alternative movement • songs: "Radio Free Europe"

Radiohead

(Alternative/Art Rock, 1992) their message was very subtle and confusing. Words and music of alienation. The conflicts within the music and lyrics force the listener to engage the song in a much more intense way reminiscent of the Beatles.

Bikini Kill

American punk-rock band formed in the 90s (1990) was one of these bands. Part of the greater Alternative movement of non mainstream music, women had the ability to say whatever they wanted now. Punk and New Wave had some women in them that allowed more women to come into punk rockish music.

American rock band noted for their musical improvising, extended jams, blending of musical genres, and a dedicated fan base. Formed at UVM in the 80s

Grunge/Alternative Rock, 1987 • American rock band; Seattle; helped bring alternative into the mainstream • elements: fused punk dissatisfaction with heavy metal distortion • songs: "Smells Like Teen Spirit" -Target audience was disenfranchised young people who didn't want to buy into the system. Dark genre, lots of contrasting elements in the song. Schizophrenic shift from section to section.

Judas Priest

Heavy Metal, 1969 • British heavy metal band; MTV ranked them as the second greatest metal band of all time; introduced S&M leather and studs look into heavy metal; recognized as one of the finest and most original heavy metal bands of all time • elements: twin lead guitars, wide operatic vocal style

Pearl Jam

steadily active even now - one of the most prominent of the grudge scene bc they are still around) o Along with Nirvana, one of the most prominent grunge bands o Basic hard rock sound that is slightly rough around the edges, notably virtuosic drummers (very well put together band, well written songs, deep sounding voice) o Eddie Vedder's rich, smooth vocals o Example: "Jeremy - american rock band in 1990 more classical rock than grunge"

Alternative

umbrella term for rock-related punk inspired styles that started in the early 80s. They sought artistic freedom to make the music they wanted to make uncorrupted by a corporate mindset. Lollapalooza was the music festival that defined the genre. -restore integrity and important to rock -fast tempos, busy rhytms, loud core instruments- vocals , guitar, bass and drums
