Unit 3- Psychology 1101 (Memory)
retrieval
The act of getting information out of memory storage and back into conscious awareness
semantic encoding
The encoding of words and their meaning
Explicit memories (declarative)
Those we consciously try to remember and recall. Has to do with the storage of facts and events we personally experienced
Short-term memory (STM)
a temporary storage system that processes incoming sensory memory; sometimes it is called working memory
Recall
can access information without cues (retrieval)
Episodic memory
explicit memory: information about events we have personally experienced
semantic memory
explicit memory: knowledge about words, concepts, and language-based knowledge and facts
Retrieval
getting the information out of memory and back into awareness
acoustic encoding
he encoding of sounds, words in particular
Recognition
identify information that you have previously learned after encountering it again (retrieval)
Procedural memory
implicit memory: it stores information about how to do things
relearning
involves learning information that you previously learned (retrieval)
Encoding
involves the input of information into the memory system
Implicit memories (non-declarative)
memories that are not part of our consciousness. They are memories formed from behaviors
effortful processing
probably required a lot of work and attention on your part in order to encode that information
sensory memory
storage of brief sensory events, such as sights, sounds, and tastes
rehearsal
the conscious repetition of information to be remembered
Long-term memory (LTM)
the continuous storage of information
automatic processing
the encoding of details like time, space, frequency, and the meaning of words
Visual encoding
the encoding of images
Memory
the set of processes used to encode, store, and retrieve information over different periods of time
self-reference effect
the tendency for an individual to have better memory for information that relates to oneself in comparison to material that has less personal relevance
memory consolidation
to move STM into long-term memory
