Participial phrase

is made up of a participle with its modifiers, such as adverbs, and complements, such as objects

Infinitive phrase

is made up of an infinitive with modifiers or complements, all acting together as a single part of speech

Alliteration

repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of syllables, especially stressed syllables

Consonance

repetition of consonant sounds at the ends of syllables with different vowel sounds

Assonance

repetition of vowel sounds in stressed syllables that end with different consonant sounds

First person naive

the narrator does not fully understand what is happening - for example, because he/she is a child or is traveling in an unfamiliar place

Third person

the narrator of the story is not part of the story but tells it from outside of the story and the narrator may know more than characters

First person

the story is told by the narrator who is experiencing the events and can only describe what she or he is told

Rhyme scheme

when a poem has a pattern of rhyme

Implied theme

when an author suggests their theme and readers have to analyze the elements of the story, characters, plot, setting, and the author's style and choices

Stated theme

when the author directly tells the reader the theme of their work
