1. Credit Mobilier - Union Pacific Railroad was building the transcontinental railroad and bribed congressmen stock in the Credit Mobilier company. 2. Whiskey Ring - A group of whiskey distillers bribed government officials to defraud the government of the excise taxes on liquor. 3. Fisk and Gould - they tried to gain control of the gold market by buying gold and then selling it when prices rose. Plane half worked because Grant opened up the federal gold when learned of the scam.
What were the three important provisions of the Fourteenth Amendment?
1. Granted all blacks citizenship in the United States. 2. Declared states may not deny any person "life, liberty or property, without due process of law." 3. Prohibited from holding office.

A carpetbagger is a northern radical who moved to the south. A scalawag is southerner who cooperated with the radicals.

Dismissed Edwin Stanton - tried to impeach him but found not guilty.
Describe some of the pros and cons of the sharecropping system.
Pros- helped provide people something to do and added a sense of contribution. Cons- was similar to slavery, was under contract and was almost impossible to save money and work out of sharecropping because of taxes.
What system of farming was the South's main economic response to the devastation caused by the Civil War?
Sharecropping.
Explain the basic difference in the motivations of Johnson and the Radical Republicans in their respective Reconstruction plans.
The Radicals wanted to punish the south while Johnson wanted to get the country together as quick as possible.

The ten percent plan only needed 10% of the people who had voted. The wade davis bill wanted a majority of adult white males to vote.

They decided that their other choice would be getting a worse president and they believed that they were following their consciences.
