Waves: Vibrational Motion
restoring force:
a force that acts upon a vibrating object to move it back to its original equilibrium position.
Spring System:
a mass on a spring undergoes vibrational motion..back and forth.pulling a mass attached to a spring to the right of its resting position stretched the spring. When released, the mass is pulled back to the left. it passes its resting position and the spring begins to compress. these compressions in the spring result in a restoring force that pushes rightward on the left moving mass.
translational motion:
an object is permanently displaced vs vibrational where wiggles around its original position until it returns to equilibrium position.
vibration
back and forth motion of an object
inverted pendulum:
it has a fixed end located below the vibrating mass. ex: tennis ball on dowel rod, skyscraper, trees, tines of tuning fork
Pendulum:
it has regular repeating motion.ex: in a grandfather clock
How do we see the world around us? How do we hear the world around us?
light waves sound waves.
resting position/equilibrium position:
not vibrating., state of equilibrium, balance of forces
forced vibration:
the force that sets an otherwise resting object into motion.
damping:
the tendency of a vibrating object to lose or dissipate its energy over time.
