External style sheet

A data file with the .css file extension, which you attach to the HTML file using the Attach Style Sheet button in the CSS Styles panel. Multiple pages can reference the same external style sheet, making it easier to update and maintain the appearance of an entire website using the same external style sheet.

Unordered list

A list that is bulleted and is called on by the <ul> tag.

Ordered list

A list that is numbered and is called on by the <ol> tag.

Template

A master page used to create multiple pages from the same layout. You can modify elements common to all pages in the template and the change occurs globally to all pages attached to the template. The templates folder is created in the local root folder of the site and by default any template created is saved there.

Repeating region

A section of the template that can be copied multiple times in a template-based page, to provide consistency of sections that will be repeated.

Editable optional region

Allows content in an optional region to be modified and you can choose whether to include the region in the web page. The object can be added to a template by clicking Template Objects on the Insert menu, or by clicking the Templates button on the Common category on the Insert panel.

AP div tag

An absolutely positioned div tag adjust on the page according to the size of the browser window, and when opened in a browser, its location is relative to the upper-left corner of the page.

Editable region

Areas of the page that can be modified.

Relative positioning

Describes positioning by specifying distance from other elements on the page.

Fixed positioning

Describes positioning relative to the browser window.

CSS layout block

Includes div tags, images assigned with either an absolute or relative position, a tag with the display: block style assigned, or a paragraph with an absolute or relative position assigned to it.

Round-trip editing

Lets you edit an asset from a Dreamweaver document in an image-editing application such as Fireworks or Photoshop, or a SWF file created in Flash.

Font family

Provides a list of alternative fonts; if the first font is not available, it will try the next font in the list.

Optional region

Provides some flexibility when designing a page from a template; it allows you to show or hide this region when editing a page based on the template.

HTML

Stands for Hypertext Markup Language and uses markup tags to create web pages. The webpage is saved with the file extension .htm or .html. This file extension is recognized by browsers to open and show the content of the page without displaying the markup tags, also referred to as HTML tags.

Static positioning

The default setting and positions elements according to the standard flow of the page.

Absolute positioning

Used when items are positioned using x- and y-coordinates and are removed from the standard flow of the page. The document and other elements on the page behave as if the absolutely positioned element does not exist.

Div tag

an HTML tag used as the foundation of a CSS page layout to organize content on a webpage by defining areas or sections. They are more flexible to work with than tables because you can place them anywhere on the page.

Definition list

used for definitions or descriptions, and does not have a leading character. Used with the <dl> <dt> and <dd> tags.
