What Am I? Chapter 3 Control Devices
Head Restraint
I am a padded device on the backs of your front seats. I help reduce whiplash injuries if your car is struck from the rear.
Steering Wheel
I am used to control the direction of the front wheels. When I am turned right, the car moves to the right. When I am turned left, the car turns left.
Accelerator
I am used to control the speed of a car. I also set the automatic choke.
Brake
I am used to slow or sop a car. If you tap me lightly, the brake light will flash.
Ignition
I am usually located on the steering column. The engine will not start unless I am turned to the "ON" position.
Temperature Warning Light
I illuminate when the engine coolant gets too hot.
Brake Warning Light
I remind you to release the parking brake. I also warn you that all or part of brake system is not working properly
Odometer
I show the total number of miles a car has been driven.
Alternator
I warn you if the car's electrical system is in trouble.
Oil Pressure Gauge
I warn you when the engine oil is not circulating at the right pressure.
Seatbelt
If I am fitted properly, I help you avoid hitting the inside of the car during a sudden stop or collision.
Gear Selector Lever
In a car with an automatic transmission, you move me to choose forward or reverse gears.
Clutch
In a stick shift car, I am to the left of the foot-brake pedal. You push me down to shift gears.
Hazard Lights or Emergency Flasher
When I am on, all turn-signal lights flash at the same time. I warn others that your vehicle is a hazard or that you are in trouble.
