Define and explain "theodicy." How would you answer someone who questions the omnipotence and goodness of God because he allows bad things to happen to good people.
A theodicy is an attempt to answer the problem of evil by explaining God's reasons for allowing evil and suffering. I would tell them that we do not always know the reason the suffering is happen, like in Job, the readers understand why the suffering is happening, but Job had no idea that he was God's example of pure righteousness. We cannot even begin to grasp the infinite wisdom that God possseses, sometimes suffering is allowed to bring about repentence, sometimes it is punishment, but no matter what the initial goal of the punishment is, the ultimate goal is to bring about faith in a person. Faith that God has control and will ultimately bring about good, he will punish the wicked and bless the righteous in the end.

How can the information gleaned from the book of Job be used to comfort someone who is suffering?
If we were reading the book of Job from Job's perspective, we would be just as confused why the suffering is happening. Without the knowledge a reader gains from Job 1-2, we would not see that God chose Job to suffer because he was righteous and God knew that his righteousness was not because of his protection. We do not always know why we are suffering, it could be for God's glory. We also see that faith that goes untested is no faith at all. (Job 1:5) In the end, God does follow the Retribution principle, he will reward those who are faithful through trials. (Job 42:12-16)
