The basic pattern of migration to Australia and Oceania started in Southeast Asia and spread eastward and southward. In general, the parts of the region closest to Southeast Asia were settled earliest, and those farthest away were settled later. Later, European colonization, especially the colonization of Australia and New Zealand by the British, left its imprint. This brings us to the next part of this exercise, an exploration of languages in the region. Refer to the map below to answer the questions that follow.
