What issue led to further/more Christian persecution in 1637?

An uprising in southern Japan of some 30,000 peasants led by the Tokugawa shogunate. Because so many of the rebels were Christian the shogun decide that it was Christianity's reason for the rebellion.

Europeans began coming to Japan in the 16th century. Portugal and other Europeans countries.

What was the European motive with trading with Japan? What was the REASON Europe wanted to trade with Japan? What goods did the Europeans bring to Japan? Why did the Japanese want these goods?

Europeans wanted to involve themselves in Japans trade with China and Southeast Asia. They brought Clocks, eyeglasses, tobacco, firearms, and other unfamiliar and new and different items from Europe. They were eager to expand their markets.

Why did the shogun not trust Christianity and missionaries.

He thought some parts of the missionaries ways were troublesome. The missonaries put down traditonal Japanese beliefs and sometimes involved themselves in local Japanese politics.

In 1549 Christian missionaries began arriving in Japan. The missonaries came to convert/change the Japanese to Christianity. The Japanese accepted them because they associated them with the muskets/guns and other Europeans goods they wanted to purchase.

Describe the CLOSED COUNTRY POLICY

Only one port in Nagasaki stayed open to foreign trade. Only the Dutch and Chinese merchants could trade. The Tokugawa shoguns controlled Nagasaki so they now had a monopoly on foreign trade. For over 200 years Japan was closed to Europeans. Japanese could not leave the country either. Japan remained self sufficient and free from the influence of European ideas.

The daimyo thought the muskets and cannons because every daimyo sought/wanted an advantage over his rivals and thought the new weapons would help. Firearms forever changed the time honored tradition of the Japanese warrior whose main weapon had been the sword.
