Alliance

An alliance is when two or more countries make an agreement to support each other when one goes to war. The two sides that were present during WWI was the Central Powers and Allies. The Central Powers were Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria. The Allies were France, Russia, Britain, USA, Serbia and Greece.

Entente

An entente is an informal alliance between states or factions. During World War I, there was something called a Triple Entente.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand

Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the throne. During his visit to Bosnian on June 28,1914 a member of the Black Hand, Gavrilo Princip, shot Ferdinand and his wife. The assassination of Franz Ferdinand was one of the short term causes that sparked the beginning of World War I.

Central Powers

Central Powers were one of the sides that fought the Allies during World War I. The Central Powers consist of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. (AGO + B). Italy was first part of the Central Powers but then switched over to the Allies, so they were basically considered to be on both sides.

David Lloyd George

David Lloyd George was a British prime minister, his goal after WWI was the make Germany pay.

Fourteen Points

Fourteen Points was created by President Wilson to keep peace . It included Self-Determination, Freedom of Seas, No secret treaties/alliances, League of Nations, and arms should be reduced.

Gavrilo Princip

Gavrilo Princip was a member of the Black Hand. He basically started up the whole World War I, when he assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand.

Imperialism

Imperialism was another cause of WWI. Imperialism is when a country takes over a smaller, weaker country. Imperialism is basically a country trying to build up an empire. People took over smaller countries in need for raw materials because of the increase in industries. Africa, Asia, and the Americans caused Europeans to compete for control over their areas.

Isolationism

Isolationism is something like neutrality, it was a national policy to avoid getting involved in world affairs.

Kaiser Wilhelm II

Kaiser Wilhelm II was the ruler of Germany during World War II.

League Of Nations

League of Nations was created to avoid something like World War I to happen again. It was introduced by Woodrow Wilson in the Fourteen Points.

Mandate System

Mandate System was a compromise between German and Turkey colonies.

Militarism

Militarism was basically one of the four causes of WWI. Militarism was countries building up a strong military and getting ready for war. Militarism caused an increased in military spending and caused a glorification of war.

Neutrality

Neutrality is staying neutral during a war, meaning that you do not pick neither side and just stay out it. During World War I Spain remained neutral refusing to take part in it or choose a side.

Reparations

Reparation is paying someone back for something you've done. The Treaty of Versailles forced Germany to pay for the reparations.

Self-Determination

Self-Determination is when people have the right to choose their own free will.

Stalemate

Stalemate is when there was no movement or gain of land during the war at the trenches.

Allied Powers

The Allied Powers are the other side that fought against Central Powers in World War I. The Allied Powers were France, Russia, Britain, USA, Serbia, and Greece. Initially the United States weren't part of the war but they joined for several reasons. They had close ties with Britain, because they were trading partners, Germans unrestricted submarine warfare, and the Zimmerman Telegram. Once the US joined the war it didn't take long for it to be over.

Balkan Region

The Balkan Region was the peninsula of Albania, Bosnia, Greece, and Serbia. Russia tried to expand there and it was ruled by the Ottoman Empire.

Big Four

The Big Four was the four that met at the Treaty of Versailles. These four were Lloyd George (Britain), Orlando (Italy), Clemenceau (France), Woodrow Wilson (United States).

Lusitania

The Lusitania was a boat that belonged to the United States. The United States tried to avoid involving themselves in the war, but they were forced into it. Germans knew that the US and Britain had close ties so they blew up any ship that went to Britain, the US told them to stop but they didn't listen. The sinking of the Lusitania was one of the reasons why the US was involved in WWI.

Schlieffen Plan

The Schlieffen Plan under the guidance of Alfred Von Schlieffen that called for a two-front war with France and Russia.

Treaty Of Versailles

The Treaty of Versailles was the official end to World War I. It basically put all the blame on Germany, took away their military, and forced Germany to pay for all the reparations.

Zimmerman Telegram

The Zimmerman Telegram was the last thing that set the United States off and forced them into war. It was a telegram that was suppose to be sent by Germany to Mexico telling them to attack the United States to avoid them from getting into the war going on in Europe. Instead it was intercepted and it made the United States really mad so they went into World War I , and it was over a year later.

Vittorio Orlando

Vittorio Orlando was the representative of Italy during the Paris Peace Conference (1919).

War Guilt Clause

War Guilt Clause was when they blamed Germany for everything and forced them to pay for the reparations and took away their army/military.

Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill was British and he led Britain during World War II

Woodrow Wilson

Woodrow Wilson was the President during World War I. He created the Fourteen Points to try to keep the peace.
