Primary Intention Healing

Heals by epitheliazation; quickly w/minimal scars Example: Surgical Wound

Chronic Wound

Continued exposure to insult impedes wound healing. Example: Vascular or inflammation issues. DOES NOT heal through an orderly process

Closed Wound

Primary Intention Wound Type

Secondary Intention Wound Type

Wound left open for days then wound edges approximated

Tertiary Intention Wound Type

Acute Wound

Wound edges clean & intact. Example: Surgical Incision Wound heals though an orderly phase of healing

Tertiary Intention Healing

Wound left open to delay risk of infection. Example: Contaminated wounds that require observation for signs of inflammation (Delayed Primary Intention)
