Slave populations in the colonies

About each 50 years slaves kept coming in. There was 20% of the population that were slaves.

Why is the colony of Georgia established and what happens to this colony?

Georgia was established because they needed more land since a lot of people were coming in. Georgia changed because at first the settlers were happy since they were granted a lot land but, then Oglethorpe had some very strict rules. The caused the settlers in Virginia very upset.

What was Jamestown and how was funded?

Jamestown was the first English successful settlement that led about 40 miles up the James River in Virginia. It was funded by a joint-stock company called London company.

Why were indentured servants needed?

they were needed because the English needed men to go hunt for food and water. They also needed them to look for gold.

What was one reason why Christians came to the new world?

So they wouldn't be prosecuted just because of their religion.

What is the difference between a slave and a indentured servant?

A slave is someone who is force to work for their rest of their life and a indentured servant is someone who signs a contract to work for whoever for a couple amount of years.

What caused Bacon's rebellion and how did it end?

Bacon didn't like how the rules were there because he wants to take over the American's Indians land. When the Governor tried to stop him his followers attacked him and burnt Jamestown. Bacon soon died of a fever.

Who controls all of the Southern colonies?

Even though the colonists has the land the king of England(George II) still controls all of it.

He married Pocahontas and introduced a new type of tobacco that sold well in England.

John Smith

He was the one who took control of the colony. He forced labors to work harder and to build better housing creating rules that rewarded harder workers food. He also made an agreement with Powhatan that brought food and the Natives taught them how to grow corn.

What do you think was the most serious problem faced by the settlers in Virginia? Why?

I think it would have to be the harsh winters because a lot of their crops probably died due to the cold. They also had to stay warm or they would die.

Which colony was the first to promote religious tolerance?

It was Maryland because there was something called the Toleration Act of 1649 which was a bill that made it a crime to restrict the religious rights of Christians

What was the purpose of slave codes?

It was suppose to control so if they behaved bad they would have to give them a punishment.

Why was the Toleration act needed?

It was to reduce madness since the Christians and protestants were fighting when they got to Maryland.

Why did Jamestown begin to fail and how did it eventually succeed?

Jamestown started to fail because the winter, diseases, and famine hit them. Jamestown failed to make a profit until colonist John Rolfe introduced a new type of tobacco that sold well in England.

Why did more enslaved Africans live in South Carolina than did white settlers?

That is where the most Africans were brought to or they already lived there before the white settlers.

Who benefited from the headright system and how were they benefited?

The Colonists were benefited from the headright system because each person they brought into Virginia they would get 50 more acres of land. Also the London company was benefited because they would grow each time someone came.

What happened to the London company?

The London company could not protect it's colonists so the English Crown canceled the company's charter in 1624.

Pocahontas

The daughter of Powhatan who married John Rolfe. She died 3 years later after visiting John Rolfe in England.

Why were slaves in high demand in the Southern colonies?

The slaves were in high demand because they didn't like how they were being treated. They also wanted to end this madness because they know that this isn't fair to control people like this.

How did the Southern colonies make money?

The southern colonies made money by growing cash crops such as tobacco, rice, and indigo which was used to make a blue dye. They also built ships and sold deer skin.

What were indentured servants?

They were servants that signed a contract to work for four to seven years for those who paid for their journey to America.

What are slave codes?

They were very strict laws that controlled slaves.

How were colonists encouraged to settle in the Carolina's?

Those who paid their own way received large grants of land.

Which crops were important cash crops?

Tobacco, rice, and indigo- a plant used to make blue dye were the most important cash crops.
