Conception Prenatal development Competent newborn

Stability vs change

Do our early personality traits persist through life, or do we become different persons as we go

Infants like adults focus first on the.., not the body

At each prenatal stage....factors affect our development

Genetic and environmental

Nature vs nurture

How do genetic inheritance and experience influence our development

Continuity vs stages

Is development a gradual, continuos process or does it proceed through a sequence of separate stages

Is there a safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy

Your friend's older sister—a regular drinker—hopes to become pregnant soon and has stopped drinking. Why is this a good idea? What negative effects might alcohol consumed during pregnancy have on a developing fetus?

There is no known safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy, so your friend's older sister is wise to quit drinking before becoming pregnant. Harmful effects may occur even before a woman knows she is pregnant. If a woman drinks persistently and heavily during her pregnancy, the fetus will be at risk for severe physical and/or cognitive impairments (such as occurs with fetal alcohol syndrome).

When does the process of reproducing start for women

Woman's ovary releases a mature egg

a branch of psychology that studies physical, cognitive, and social change throughout the life span. (pp. 13, 411)

developmental psychology

the developing human organism from about 2 weeks after fertilization through the second month. (p. 412)

embryo

physical and cognitive abnormalities in children caused by a pregnant woman's heavy drinking. In severe cases, symptoms include noticeable facial misproportions. (p. 413)

fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS)

the developing human organism from 9 weeks after conception to birth. (p. 412)

fetus

decreasing responsiveness with repeated stimulation. As infants gain familiarity with repeated exposure to a visual stimulus, their interest wanes and they look away sooner. (p. 414)

habituation 2:

agents, such as chemicals and viruses, that can reach the embryo or fetus during prenatal development and cause harm. (p. 413)

teratogens

the fertilized egg; it enters a 2-week period of rapid cell division and develops into an embryo. (p. 412)
