Flashing yellow light

A flashing yellow light means slow down and proceed with caution. Flashing yellow lights are at locations with higher-than-normal hazardous conditions.

Steady yellow light

A red light is about to appear. Stop unless you are already within the intersection.

Flashing red light

A red light means stop. The red light will always be on the top of vertical traffic signals or on the left of horizontal traffic signals.

Broken white lines

Broken white lines are used on one-way roads. You may cross broken white lines to pass, but always check your mirrors and use your turn signals to cross safely. If you need to turn, move into the proper lane well in advance of your turn.

Broken yellow lines

Broken yellow lines are used for two-lane roads with two-way traffic. Keep to the right of the yellow center line. You may cross a broken line when passing another vehicle or when the right half of the road is closed. Make sure oncoming traffic is not coming if you decide to pass by crossing the broken line. DO NOT CROSS the line if it is not safe. When in doubt, chicken out. TD

Center lanes

Center lanes are placed in the middle of two-way roads. They should only be entered when a vehicle will have time to slow down or stop in order to make a safe left turn maneuver. Note: You can only drive in a center turn lane for a maximum of 200 feet before turning, so don't start too early!

Double yellow lines

Double yellow lines should not be crossed. You can not cross a double yellow line in order to pass.

Green light

Green means go, and will always either be the bottom light of a vertical traffic light or the right light on a horizontal traffic light. When a light turns green, be on the lookout for careless drivers who may speed across the intersection in an attempt to beat a red light. Unfortunately, not everyone is an Aceable-quality driver. You may also turn left on a green light, but you must yield the right-of-way to oncoming traffic.

Flags

If you see this flag, slow down. The person driving this vehicle may have a hearing disability.

Solid vs broken lines

In general, solid lines mark a "no-passing zone". Broken lines mark that it is ok to pass if safe.

The shape of a traffic sign also helps explain its meaning.

Octagon: Exclusively for stop signs Horizontal Rectangle: Generally for guide signs Equilateral Triangle: Exclusively for yield signs Pennant: Advance warning of no pass zones

Crosswalks

Pedestrians should use crosswalks to cross the street. White crosswalk lines are painted across a road to indicate pedestrian crossing areas. At intersections where stop lines are missing, you must stop before the crosswalk when required to stop by traffic signs, traffic signals, or pedestrians. As always, WATCH OUT FOR PEDESTRIANS.

Railroad Warning Signs

Railroad warning signs warn us if we are approaching or next to a railroad. Always slow down and be prepared to stop. If you see a train coming, STOP. Never try to beat a train.

The color of a traffic sign helps explain its meaning.

Red: Stop or prohibited Green: Indicated movements permitted, direction guidance Blue: Motorist services guidance Yellow: General warning Black: Regulation White: Regulation Orange: Construction and maintenance warning Orange (Retroreflective): Used on various types of signs Brown: Public recreation and scenic guidance

Steady Red Light

Stop completely before entering the crosswalk or intersection. If the light is red, you can turn right and also left if both streets are one way (turning left on red is unique to Texas and a few other states).

So when you are in a construction and maintenance work area, be prepared:

To slow down or stop as you approach workers and equipment To change lanes For unexpected movement by workers and equipment

Slow down

When you do see a flag person, be prepared to slow down. A flag person wears an orange vest, shirt, or jacket and uses stop/slow paddles or red flags to direct traffic through work zones. Their instructions must be obeyed. Please do not attempt to go forward unless the flag person instructs you to do so

Yellow light

Yellow means caution. The yellow light will always be the middle light of a traffic light signal.

Flashing yellow arrow

You may turn in the direction of the arrow, if the way is clear. Yield the right-of-way to vehicles coming from the other direction and pedestrians in the intersection.

Barrels

You'll probably see barrels when driving. Barrels were designed as an impact cushion to reduce the seriousness of crashes. They are usually installed in front of solid obstacles and in an area of high frequency.
