DUAL-STAGE, MULTIPLE-THRESHOLD FRONT AIRBAGS

(SRS). One or both of these airbags will be deployed only in the event of a sufficient frontal impact. *If deployed, these airbags are capable of being inflated at different rates, depending on crash severity, seat-belt usage, and/or other factors. Front airbags are designed to supplement the seat belts to help reduce the likelihood of head and upper body injuries in frontal crashes

SURROUND SOUND

A 360-degree, multi-channel experience featuring numerous speakers that have been strategically positioned to deliver optimal listening enjoyment. Acura/ELS systems are DVD-based, and are one of the few OEM systems that have true surround-sound capability, since its 5.1 channel capability allows all 6 channels to play different audio (compared to a CD-based system, which only has two channels).

LOWER ANCHORS and TETHERS for CHILDREN (LATCH)

A child-seat mounting system that consists of both upper child seat tether anchors and lower anchors. When used with a compatible child seat, the LATCH system provides attachment points between the child seat and the vehicle seat

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)

A computer-controlled system that modulates brake-line pressure at each wheel based on inputs from the wheel-speed sensors. The system releases and reapplies the brakes up to 20 times per second to prevent skidding and to help the driver retain steering control. Standard on all Acura models.

BLIND SPOT INFORMATION (BSI) SYSTEM

A convenience feature that helps alert the driver if a vehicle is detected in the driver's blind spot. The system uses radar sensors located in the rear of the vehicle, as well as warning indicators on the inside of the front doors.

INTEGRATED DYNAMIC SYSTEM (IDS)

Enables drivers to choose the feel of the dynamic responses within the vehicle. With a button located by the shifter, the driver can change from the "Normal" setting to "Sport" to increase steering feel and quicken throttle response. On Super Handling All-Wheel Drive models, the system more aggressively distributes power to outside wheels in a curve. A third "Comfort" setting creates a lighter power steering feel.

VARIABLE VALVE TIMING and LIFT ELECTRONIC CONTROL (VTEC)

Enables engines to produce increased power across a broader rpm range while still maintaining good torque, and even improving fuel efficiency. At low rpm, the first cam profile operates the valves to maximize torque, increasing driveability and fuel efficiency. At higher rpm, a second cam-lobe profile operates the valves to increase their opening and duration, resulting in increased power.

PANDORA COMPATABILITY

Enables users to listen to and control their favorite Pandora stations on their iPhones through the vehicle's audio system

TIRE SIDEWALL DESIGNATIONS

Every tire lists specific information on its sidewall. For example, a P195/60 R15 89v tire is broken down as follows: -P designates a passenger-car tire -195 is the section width measured in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall -60 is the aspect ratio, which is the relationship between the width of the tread and the height of the sidewall. The lower the aspect ratio, the lower the profile a tire has. In this case, the sidewall height is 117mm (0.6 x 195) -R indicates this is a radial-design tire -15 is the wheel's diameter, measured in inches -89 is the tire's load rating -V is the tire's speed rating

MP3/AUXILLARY INPUT JACK

Lets clients hook up virtually any iPod or MP3 player, which can then be played through the vehicle's audio system. The input jack uses a standard headphone-jack plug. The volume of the input source can then be controlled through the audio system.

BLUETOOTH AUDIO

Lets clients play high-quality digital audio wirelessly through the vehicle's audio system from compatible smartphones with music players. In order to use this feature, clients must first pair their phone with the vehicle's HandsFreeLink system. Requires a separate profile on the phone, in addition to the HandsFreeLink profile. Not all phones will support this capability. Refer to www.acura.com/handsfreelink for a list of compatible phones. Commercial Bluetooth adapters for iPod are not supported at this time.

DRIVER'S KNEE AIRBAG

Located below the steering column, it is designed to help the driver maintain a proper position in a frontal crash to maximize the protection provided by the front airbags and seat belt.

MILLIMETER-WAVE RADAR SENSOR

Located on the grille, when equipped with Advance Package, this sensor is used by the ACC and the CMBS. By detecting large metal objects up to 330 feet in front of the vehicle, it maintains a driver-selected distance--and in the case of CMBS, assists in alerting the driver to a potential collision and helps reduce the forces of a collision if one becomes unavoidable.

CORROSION PROTECTION

Materials added to the structure to reduce the likelihood of damaging corrosion from water or other elements. For example, Acura bodies contain zinc-galvanized steel components that are coated with zinc phosphate, an anti-rust wax is applied to internal body cavities. A special anti-chipping primer is also used on leading edges--all to help reduce corrosion.

HEAT-REJECTING GLASS

Specially treated glass helps "reject" heat by keeping out infrared sunlight to help reduce sun damage and interior temperature. This is a much more sophisticated approach than the green, blue, or gray tinting that is done primarily to reduce glare.

PROGRAMMED FUEL INJECTION (PGM-FI)

The Acura-designed sequential electronic fuel-delivery system. Fuel is injected directly into the intake manifold ports near the intake valve at precisely the right time in the right amount for the driving conditions. As a result, performance and fuel efficiency are improved, while emissions are reduced. Acura uses this advanced PGM-FI system on all its vehicles.

PROGRESSIVE DAMPERS

The TL and TSX use progressive dampers that go beyone traditional mechanical dampers in most vehicles. Using a blow-off valve and an adjustable spring (TL), these dampers provide flatter cornering while simultaneously delivering a better ride over bumps and potholes

BRAKE ASSIST

The electronically controlled system is designed to help drivers apply full braking force in emergency situations. The system uses a microprocessor that continually monitors the speed of brake-pedal application and brake system pressure that are part of the driver's normal braking habits. If the driver suddenly brakes harder, as in an emergency, the microprocessor detects the increased rate of pedal application and applies full braking force as long as the driver's foot remains on the pedal. If this braking force is above the traction threshold for the tires, the system will activate normally. Standard on all Acura models.

4 VALVES PER CYLINDER

This system uses one pair of valves to allow air/fuel into the combustion chambers (intake valves), and another pair of valves to allow exhaust gases out (exhaust valves). This design increases effective valve area, lowers valvetrain inertia (due to smaller valve size) and allows superior engine breathing at a high rpm for the highest output and efficiency possible.

INTELLIGENT VARIABLE VALVE TIMING and LIFT ELECTRONIC CONTROL (i-VTEC)

This version of VTEC adds Variable Timing Control to alter intake camshaft phasing as well as the opening and closing of the valves. Acura calls this "intelligent" or i-VTEC

ACTIVE FRONT LIGHTING SYSTEM (AFS)

To enhance the driver's ability to see at night, this system automatically turns the low-beam lights up to 20 degrees in the same direction the vehicle is turning. (Except when stopped and when making a left-hand turn, to prevent blinding oncoming drivers.)

HIGH-INTENSITY DISCHARGE (HID) HEADLIGHTS

Use a halide reaction to produce a brighter, whiter beam of light than halogen headlights. The beam of light they produce is wider and goes about 100 feet farther down the road than halogen lights. They also last about 50% longer than halogen headlights

AMPLITUDE-REACTIVE DAMPERS

Use a second valve and spring located within the damper to enable two different tuning points, providing excellent roll resistance in corners, while also delivering a smoother ride over rough roads.

KEYLESS ACCESS SYSTEM

User-friendly mechanism that allows drivers to open the door or trunk merely by grasping the door handle or pressing their fingertips against a selected area while the key remote is within 30 inches of the actual handle. Drivers may also start the engine without having to insert the key into the ignition.

FORWARD COLLISION WARNING (FCW)

Uses a camera mounted behind the front windshield or the radar emitter and sensor used as a part of the ACC system to detect whether objects ahead are approaching too closely, and can sound an audible alert and flash a warning in the MID to warn the driver to take corrective action. It will not apply the vehicle's brakes automatically.

ALL-WHEEL DRIVE (AWD)

A drivetrain configuration in which all four wheels receive engine torque at all times. Differs from 4-wheel drive in that 4-wheel drive systems typically only deliver power to the four wheels part-time (the system usually operates in two-wheel drive until needed). Some all-wheel-drive systems use a fixed distribution for the front and rear axles, while other systems can vary the amount sent front to rear, but also actively side-to-side at the rear wheels while accelerating the outside rear wheel in corners.

NOTE FUNCTION

A feature of XM Radio, the Note function allows clients to capture and identify song information in case they want to purchase a song or remember information about it. When the XM button is pressed for more than 2 seconds, the system will instantly capture the data of the song currently being played, such as artist name and song title. The system will also record up to 10 seconds of music, so clients can play back the song. The Note function will hold a total of 30 songs in memory.

SEQUENTIAL SPORTSHIFT

A feature on every Acura with an automatic transmission. It combines the ease of an automatic with the control of a manual transmission (stick shift). When the transmission is in the sequential mode, the driver can upshift or downshift without the use of a clutch by using the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters

INTEGRATED MOTOR ASSIST SYSTEM

A hybrid system that uses a gasoline engine, an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery to power the vehicle and maximize fuel efficiency. The system mainly operates using the gasoline engine and the electric motor to assist when accelerating or climbing hills. The electric motor can power the vehicle without the gasoline engine in some lower-speed cruising situations. It features an ECON mode to further help improve fuel efficiency, while an Eco Assist feedback system helps owners to drive more efficiently.

LOCKUP TORQUE CONVERTER

A hydraulic clutch in an automatic transmission that mechanically "locks" the torque converter to its output shaft. This reduces internal torque converter slippage and increases fuel economy.

ACTIVE SOUND CONTROL (ASC)

A more advanced version of Active Noise Cancellation. It incorporates the functions of ANC, but can further enhance certain engine sounds entering the cabin, for a more sporty driving experience

BLUETOOTH

A networking technology that can wirelessly connect an electronic device, such as a smartphone, with a vehicle's audio system for hands-free operation.

TIRE LOAD ROTATING

A numerical index indicating the load-carrying capacity of a tire at maximum inflation pressure.

ACURALINK

A satellite-based communication system that delivers state-of-the-art in-vehicle communication and also can provide continuously updated traffic and weather information for many metropolitan areas. Included with the system are functions such as Automated Appointments, Note function for XM Radio, Feature Guide, Quick Tips and Diagnostic Information

CAMSHAFT

A shaft with contoured, egg-shaped lobes that, when rotating, causes the intake and exhaust valves to open and close. The operation allows the flow of air and fuel into the cylinders and lets the exhaust gases out. Acura uses both single overhead camshaft (SOHC) and dual overhead camshaft (DOHC) designs, depending upon the model.

LIGHT-EMITTING DIODE (LED)

A solid-state luminescent electrical light used to display information or provide illumination. LEDs are more uniformly bright than conventional filament bulbs, require less maintenance and allow for more compact designs due to their small size. LED taillights also illuminate more quickly to increase a following driver's time to react.

DUAL OVERHEAD CAMSHAFT (DOHC)

A sophisticated design that uses twin camshafts: one to actuate the intake valves, and the second to actuate the exhaust valves. A DOHC cylinder head allows optimum placement of the valves for the best combusiton-chamber design, thus yielding higher performance, but requires bulkier packaging compared to single overhead camshaft designs.

RACK-and-PINION STEERING

A steering system in which a pinion (or gear) engages a long, toothed rack that is attached to the front wheels by steering arms (tie rods). It converts rotational steering-wheel motion into a lateral motion at the rack to turn the wheels. Acura uses this on all of its current vehicles.

ACURALINK REAL-TIME TRAFFIC

A subscription-based service that monitors current traffic conditions along major routes in select metropolitan areas on highways that have traffic-flow data. Heavy traffic concentrations are displayed in red, moderate traffic in orange, and free-flowing traffic in green.

MULTI-INFORMATION DISPLAY

Display on the instrument panel that informs the driver of maintenance needs, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink usage, Acura personalized settings, SH-AWD power distribution display and other vehicle notices and warnings.

SMS/MMS TEXT MESSAGE AND EMAIL FUNCTIONS

Drivers with compatible smartphones can receive text messages or emails, have them read aloud by the system, and respond to them. The system will accomodate SMS texts as well as MMS, texts---although any attached media cannot be viewed. To be compatible, phones must have the MAP (Message Access Profile). This software is only featured on select phones. Please refer to acura.com/handsfreelink for the most current listing of compatible phones. Data-usage charges may accrue on the driver's mobile phone account when this feature is used.

USB AUDIO INTERFACE

Enables clients to dock, charge and control a variety of current digital audio players, such as current generation iPod models, directly through the audio system. USB mass-storage devices such as flash drives can also be used to play back MP3, WMA or AAC music files, and can display the song title, artist and other information on the audio screen. However, some USB devices with security software and digital rights-protected files may not work

ACURALINK REAL-TIME WEATHER

A subscription-based service that uses data from XM NavWeather. It displays icons on the navigation screen to convey weather information. The system will also alert the driver if adverse weather is forecasted on the route. Drivers can use the system to access weather information for virtually anywhere in the contiguous 48 states. In addition, AcuraLink Real-Time weather shows weather patterns across the entire country. Weather data is provided by Baron Services, Inc., which deciphers a complex array of national weather service information to produce the weather information provided to Acura owners. The information is updated every 90 seconds. Requires an XM NavWeather subscription separate from both XM Radio and XM NavTraffic.

MULTI-LINK SUSPENSION

A suspension design in which multiple upper and lower links position and locate the axle and hub, which hold the wheel and the tire contact patch in correct relation to the road. Some of Acura's rear double-wishbone suspensions are a multi-link design, but not all multi-link designs are double-wishbone.

HYDRAULIC ENGINE MOUNT

A synthetic rubber engine mount with a fluid-filled cavity. The fluid is more effective in filtering out vibration than a conventional engine mount that uses synthetic rubber alone.

VARIABLE INDUCTION

A system by which both airflow and/or volume are modified as the engine runs at various rpm. This is achieved by channeling the air through different or additional passages in response to engine demands.

LAND KEEPING ASSIST SYSTEM (LKAS)

A system designed to detect whether the vehicle is unintentionally leaving its land, and to help bring the vehicle back into its lane if it determines this is the case. The system uses a steering-wheel actuator, and a windshield-mounted camera to look for lane markers. The system will not work at speeds about 90 mph. If LKAS determines the vehicle is deviating from a detected lane with no turn signal activation by the driver, it will activate visual and audible warnings, and will attempt to steer the vehicle back into the proper lane. The system is not intended to take over driving or steering of the vehicle. Control of the vehicle remains the driver's responsibility.

VEHICLE STABILITY ASSIST (VSA) with TRACTION CONTROL

A system on all Acura models that adds sideslip control to the ABS and Traction Control. This system is designed to help the driver retain steering control while cornering and during maneuvers that could cause a loss of traction and directional control. VSA works by controlling brake pressure, engine power, SH-AWD torque distribution (on some models) or a combination of the three, depending on the situation. It is especially helpful when driving in low-traction conditions, such as snow or rain. Certain models are equipped with Trailer Stability Assist to help provide additional stability when towing a trailer.

TRACTION CONTROL

A system that electronically monitors the drive wheels to detect any wheelspin and, when detected, takes action to stop wheelspin and transfer power to the wheel with more traction. This can include reducing engine power, applying the vehicle's brakes, or both. All Acura models have traction control as part of the Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) system

ACURALINK NEXT-GENERATION

A system that links clients' smartphones to their vehicles so they can take Internet content on the road as well as have virtual access to the vehicle from just about anywhere. The system uses an embedded cellular transceiver in the vehicle as well as designated apps downloaded to clients' smartphones to provide a wide variety of connectivity services.

ON DEMAND MULTI-USE DISPLAY (ODMD)

A touch-screen that includes tactile feedback and reduces the number of hard keys required. Audio, climate, available navigation and phone functions can all be controlled using the ODMD. There is also a shortcuts screen that includes preselected categories that drivers can customize. This enables owners to have quick and easy access to frequently used features.

UNIT BODY

A type of body construction in which the assembled body is also the frame. Unit bodies are more rigid and lighter than body-on-frame constructions. All current Acura vehicles have unit bodies.

MACPHERSON STRUT

A type of front independent suspension that uses a control arm to support the suspension at the bottom and a spring-over-shock "strut" as the suspension's upper mounting. This design allows the engine compartment to be maximized and can provide longer travel and a tighter tuning radius than some suspension designs.

HOMELINK

A universal radio frequency remote system. Provides an alternative to garage door remotes and other remote devices. It can be programmed to replace up to three handheld remote controls. With available lighting accessories, it can activate house lights as well.

BLUETOOTH HANDSFREELINK

A wireless system that allows the driver to use a compatible smartphone with hands-free profile to make calls through the vehicle's audio system. Standard on all Acura models. Some state laws prohibit the operation of handheld electronic devices while operating a vehicle.

GRACENOTE DATABASE

Acura models equipped with a hard disk drive-based navigation system can copy songs onto the drive from prerecorded CDs. This system can automatically tag each song with information, including the song's title and artist name, thanks to the Gracenote database. This database must be periodically updated to reflect newly released music. Updates are available from myacura.com

COLLISION MITIGATION BRAKING SYSTEM(CMBS)

Acura's first pre-collision system is one of the most advanced and sophisticated technologies on the market. Using a millimeter-wave radar emitter and a sensor located behind the Acura emblem on the grille, CMBS is designed to assist in alerting driers to a possible collision if their attention is delayed or distracted and helps reduce the forces of a collision if it is unavoidable. If a potential collision is detected, alerts are provided in three tiers. First, if the driver still hasn't intervened, and the system determines a collision is unavoidable, the system will apply stronger braking pressure and tighten the driver's and front passenger's seat belts to help mitigate the force of the collision and injury to them. If a potential crash is detected as a sudden threat, CMBS may skip the first two tiers and initiate the third tier immediately.

AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM

Acura's fully automatic heating/ventilation/cooling system. The driver simply sets the thermostat for a specified temperature and the system will automatically try to maintain the desired temperature. Certain systems will run the dehumidifying air-conditioning system with the heat on to produce warm, dry air. Regular heaters only warm the air without dehumidifying it. The system also includes an air-filtration system that cleans the circulating air. On vehicles equipped with navigation, the GPS-linked system takes the position of the sun into account and adjusts the fan settings automatically.

MAINTENANCE MINDER SYSTEM

Alerts the driver to maintenance needs, such as oil change, tire rotation, automatic transmission service, replacement of coolant, spark plugs, air cleaner, and timing belt, depending upon vehicle usage and standard intervals.

HARD DISK DRIVE (HDD) MEDIA STORAGE

Allows clients to reord music from CDs to a built-in hard drive; 15 gigabytes provide enough room to store 3,500 or more songs. The Gracenote database system is configured so that CDs will be recognized. The database should be updated by the client every 6 months so that new CDs will be recognized. Clients may also store up to 10 personal images that can be displayed on the navigation screen as wallpaper.

SONG BY VOICE

Allows drivers to play music stored on their compatible iPod or on the vehicle hard disk drive by voice recognition. By simply saying, "play 'The One,'" the audio system will begin to play the desired track. This system helps reduce distractions while allowing access to an entire music library

TRI-ZONE AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM

Allows the driver, front passenger, and rear passengers to adjust their own temperature and airflow settings.

ACURA NAVIGATION SYSTEM with VOICE RECOGNITION

An accurate and convenient tool for planning trips with voice commands and on-screen guidance to over 7 million points of interest and addresses. Voice recognition can also recognize spoken city and street names and responds to a range of more than 800 voice commands, such as "Find nearest ATM" and includes Zagat Survey restaurant listings. The navigation screen can also display traffic, Traffic rerouting, and weather information.

ALL-WHEEL DRIVE with INTELLIGENT CONTROL

An active all-wheel drive system. It is designed to meet the needs of clients who mainly desire wet-weather capability and good fuel efficiency. This system uses a single multi-plate clutch in the rear differential to actively send power front to rear. The system can send up to 100% of the engine's power to the front wheels, and up to 50% to the rear wheels as needed. It does not have to wait for a wheel to slip before diverting power, and can vary the engine's power distribution front to rear as needed.

ADAPTIVE CLIMATE CONTROL

An advanced climate control system that can vary the temperature between the upper vents and the footwells. If the outside ambient temperature is cool but sunny, for example, the TL will recognize that the solar heating will keep the upper torso of occupants warm but the footwells will still be cool. The system will automatically adjust for this condition by keeping the footwells warm and lowering heat levels, or even providing cool air for the upper vents.

NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA)

An agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation charged with writing and enforcing Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards as well as motor vehicle theft resistance and fuel economy.

DRIVE-BY-WIRE THROTTLE SYSTEM

An electronic position sensor connected to the accelerator pedal that sends a signal to the vehicle's powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM combines the accelerator-position signal with date such as engine rpm, coolant temperature and road speed, and determines the optimum position for the throttle plate. A signal then goes to the Drive-by-Wire driver unit, which operates a step motor on the throttle body. The step motor opens and closes the throttle to the exact position necessary for proper engine response. The system eliminates the traditional mechanical throttle cable, and allows the throttle opening to be coordinated precisely with other systems, such as traction control and emissions, and is standard on all Acura models.

VARIABLE POWER-ASSIST STEERING

An enhancement that provides more steering assist at low vehicle speeds for easy turning and less assist at higher speeds for better steering feel. This is an element of the steering systems on all Acura models.

FULL-FRONTAL IMPACT

An impact involving the full-frontal width of the vehicle. All vehicles sold in the United States must pass a federally mandated test in which the test vehicle impacts a fixed, immovable barrier at 30 mph. The vehicle must provide sufficient protection so that restrained human occupants will survive such an impact

INSURANCE INSTITUTE for HIGHWAY SAFETY (IIHS)

An independent organization funded by auto insurers and insurance associations. Its stated mission is to reduce the losses--deaths, injuries and property damage--from crashes on the nation's roads. The IIHS performs various crash tests and issues scores and designations based on the results.

COLD-AIR INDUCTION SYSTEM

An inlet on the front of a vehicle that routes cool ambient air to the engine rather than taking air from the hotter engine compartment. The cooler air is denser, and therefore has more oxygen for combustion, which results in an increase of horsepower and torque.

OCCUPANT POSITION DETECTION SYSTEM (OPDS)

As part of the side-airbag cutoff system, these height and position sensors, located in the front passenger's seatback, will determine if a child, or small-statured adult, is in the side-airbag deployment path. If this determination is made, then the side airbag will not deploy and a "side airbag off" light will illuminate on the instrument panel. The airbag will not deploy as long as the passenger remains in this position. When the OPDS determines that the passenger is no longer in the airbag deployment path, the airbag will reset and the "side airbag off" light will of out within a few seconds.

BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Can help prevent the inconvenience of a dead or weak battery. The system initially warns drivers through the MID screen when it detects the battery getting weak and will shut down accessories if it detects the battery may soon be too weak to start the engine. The system also will advise when the battery needs replacement.

HUMIDITY CONTROL

Certain Acura vehicles are equipped with this feature. When the climate control is in full Auto mode, a humidity sensor determines if conditions exist that may cause the windshield to mist over. If so, the system automatically selects the defrost mode and will adjust the temperature and fan speed before misting can occur.

DIRECT INJECTION

Compered to conventional engines, a direct-injection engine uses a fuel-delivery system that injects fuel directly into the combustion chamber, as opposed to injecting the fuel into the intake port. The system works using high-pressure injectors, a high-pressure fuel pump and an ECU to precisely control the timing of the fuel injectors. Along with allowing a higher compression ratio, the greater combustion efficiency provided by direct injection enable the engine to deliver better power with greater fuel efficiency. Because the high-pressure fuel pump is a mechanical design, direct-injection systems tend to generate a slight ticking sound--a normal characteristic. It's particularly noticeable when standing beside the vehicle while the engine is idling. Acura's direct-injection system is designed to run more quietly than most competing systems by using a damper inside the high-pressure pump. This helps provide a more quiet idle and a more refined engine note during acceleration.

ELECTRONIC ENGINE MOUNT

Contains two fluid-filled chambers separated by a valve. At idle, the valve opens to allow the mount to damp low-frequency engine vibrations. Above a specified rpm, the valve is electronically closed to firm the mount, which helps to limit engine movement in response to changing throttle position.

ELECTRONIC BRAKE DISTRIBUTION (EBD)

Continually and automatically adjusts the pressure to the front and rear brakes, depending on how the vehicle is loaded. This optimizes braking performance by sending braking power in proportion to the level of traction at the front or rear wheels and is standard on all Acura models.

RADIO DATA SYSTEM (RDS)

Data sent through FM radio broadcasts that allows information such as station identification, song, artist, genre and other information to be transmitted to a compatible receiver.

ACTIVE FRONT HEAD RESTRAINTS

Designed to help reduce the likelihood of whiplash in the event of a rear impact. When a rear impact occurs, the head restraints of the two front seats are designed to lift up and tilt forward in a fraction of a second to decrease the space between the back of the occupant's head and the head restraint.

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL (ACC) with LOW-SPEED FOLLOW

Designed to maintain a constant cruise speed as well as a set following interval when it approaches a preceding vehicle. It will even bring the vehicle to a stop and start it up again. It's important to understand that ACC is a sophisticated convenience feature; it is not intended as a safety device. ACC will not apply the brakes strongly enough to prevent a collision, so driver awareness and control are still required at all times. ACC shares a radar unit with the CMBS system, mounted behind the grille. It emits radar waves that can bounce off a vehicle ahead of the car and return to the unit, allowing the system to gauge the distance of the vehicle. ACC then sets the approptiate throttle position, and can even apply braking, to maintain a preferred following interval.

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL (ACC)

Designed to support drivers during highway driving. Uses a millimeter-wave radar emitter and a sensor (also used for the Collision Mitigation Braking System) located below the emblem on the grille to detect the speed and distance of the vehicle ahead of it (up to 330 feet) and adjust the speed accordingly to maintain the time interval the driver has chosen. It only works between the speeds of 25 and 90 mph. Once vehicle speed falls below or exceeds these limits, the system will deactivate with an audible and visual alert on the Multi-Information Display.

ADVANCED COMPATIBILITY ENGINEERING (ACE) BODY STRUCTURE

Exclusive body design that enhances occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes. The design utilizes a network of connected structural elements to distribute crash energy more evenly throughout the front of the vehicle. This enhanced frontal crash-energy management helps to reduce the forces transferred to the passenger compartment and can help to more evenly disperse the forces transferred to other vehicles in a crash. It also can help reduce the possibility that one vehicle will override the other in a frontal collision. And it adds structural elements designed to enhance performance in the IIHS small overlap frontal crash testing.

DVD-AUDIO

Have significantly more room for data than CDs and provide six different audio channels, while CDs have two channels. The additional audio channels and music data allow for surround sound and provide superior audio reproduction as compared to conventional CDs.

PRECISION ALL-WHEEL STEER (P-AWS)

Helps enhance vehicle stability, maneuverability, and control. The rear wheels can pivot as much as 1.8 degrees in the same direction as the front wheels for smooth, stable and quick lane changes. When cornering, the rear wheels angle slightly in the opposite direction from the front wheels (reverse-phase) to help rotate the car into the turn. At low speeds, reverse-phase steering helps the RLX maneuver in tight areas. In high-speed braking, each rear wheel angles inward, increasing braking ability and stability

HILL START ASSIST

Helps prevent the MDX, TL SH-AWD and ZDX, when stopped on an uphill grade, from rolling backward when the driver's foot moves from the brake pedal to the accelerator. Sensors inform the brake-system ECU when the vehicle is stopped on a grade. The ECU maintains brake-line pressure for a brief time after the brake pedal is released, allowing the pressure to diminish after the driver has had time to push on the accelerator and resume forward motion.

GRADE LOGIC CONRTOL

Improves driveability and minimizes "gear-hunting" between third, fourth, and fifth gears on uphill and downhill grades. Grade Logic Control compares actual driving conditions with data "mapped" in the memory of the powertrain control module (PCM). Based on the degree of variance, the system changes its shift schedule.

DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS (DRL)

Increase the vehicle's ability to be seen by making it easier for drivers and pedestrians to detect an approaching vehicle, especially in dust and bright sun. The DRL will turn on automatically after the vehicle is turned on and the parking brake is fully released.

PADDLE SHIFTERS

Inspired by the shifters on race cars, these steering wheel-mounted controls allow the driver to change gears manually without removing either hand from the steering wheel. The paddle on the right side is for upshifts, and the one on the left side triggers downshifts.

ELECTRIC PARKING BRAKE with AUTOMATIC BRAKE HOLD

Instead of the traditional hand lever or foot pedal for the parking brake, this system lets drivers use the electric parking brake switch to set or release the vehicle's parking brake. The automatic brake hold maintains braking pressure when the driver applies the brakes, such as in stop-and-go traffic or when on hills, and releases the brakes when the driver applies the accelerator.

JEWEL EYE LIGHT-EMITTING DIODE (LED) HEADLIGHTS

LED headlights feature LED lamps that provide superior illumination and visibility at night compared to HID headlights, and far superior performance compared to halogen projector beams. LED headlights can last up to five times longer than HID headlights, and up to 10 times longer than halogen headlights. They feature a jewel-eye design that makes them appear bright and reflective even when not activated.

SUPER HANDLING ALL-WHEEL DRIVE SYSTEM (SH-AWD)

The first torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system to actively enhance not only wet-weather handling, but also dry-weather handling by actively controlling torque between the two rear wheels and accelerating the outside wheel in corners. It works through a sophisticated torque-transfer system that not only distributes torque front-to-rear, but also actively distributes torque laterally between the rear wheels. It monitors the driver's inputs and driving conditions to determine how much power to send to the front and rear axles. Under certain conditions, some models can distribute as much as 90% of the engine's torque to the front, and then under other conditions, send as much as 7-% of the engine's torque to the rear wheels. The active side-to-side torque distribution at the rear wheels and outside-wheel acceleration are firsts. The difference between SH-AWD and other all-wheel-drive systems is that the rear-driven torque can be actively distributed up to 100% between the left and right wheels. When accelerating in corners, the outside wheel can be accelerated relative to the other wheels, causing the rear of the car to slightly rotate, providing superior handling when compared with typical all-wheel drive or rear-wheel-drive systems.

AUTOMATIC SEAT-BELT TENSIONING SYSTEM

The front 3-point seat belts on Acura vehicles are equipped with an automatic tensioning system. In the event of a moderate-to-severe frontal impact, this system instantly tightens the seat belts to help hold the driver and front passenger in place.

TIRE SPEED RATING

The maximum continuous cruising-speed rating is listed on the tire's sidewall. The passenger-car ratings are as follows: S-up to 112 mph T-up to 118mph U-up to 124 mph H-up to 130 mph Z-over 149 mph W-up to 168 mph Y-up to 186 mph

COMPRESSION RATIO

The ratio between the amount of air volume in the cylinder when the piston is at its lowest downward stroke (bottom dead center). Higher compression ratios typically denote higher engine performance, but require higher-octane fuel. Acura uses high-compression engines for more power and greater efficiency.

ERGONOMICS

The study of human beings in relationship to elements in their environment. This applies to anything that must be manipulated, sat on or observed for information. Acura engineers use this science for every Acura vehicle throughout the design process to optimize how owners interact with their vehicles.

MOTION-ADAPTIVE ELECTRIC POWER STEERING

The system is tied in with the vehicle's VSA system, and is designed to help drivers in understeer or oversteer situations. When the VSA system detects that the vehicle is not following the driver's intended line, the system can vary the amount of steering assist to encourage the driver to steer in the proper direction.

UNDERSTEER

The tendency for the front wheels to lose traction and "plow" when turning. Simply put, when the driver turns the steering wheel, the vehicle turns less sharply than intended. When pushed past its cornering limits, a car that is understeering tends to go straight, rather than to continue making its turn.

OVERSTEER

The tendency for the rear wheels to lose traction and deviate outward from the path of the front wheels when turning. Simply put, when the driver turns the steering wheel, the vehicle turns more sharply than intended. In an extreme case of oversteer, the rear end of the vehicle slides out. Acura engineers work to develop neutral handling in all Acura vehicles.

VENTILATED FRONT SEATS

These seats provide a cooling and heating effect using a fan and heating elements in the seats. A pushbutton control allows for three levels of cooling or heating each.

SMS TEXT MESSAGE FUNCTION

This enables owners with compatible phones to have an incoming text read aloud through text-to-speech technology and respond with one of six pre-programmed replies, or simply to call back the person who sent the text message.

HD RADIO

This feature enables the vehicle to receive digital high-definition broadcasts from stations on the AM and FM bands, with significantly enhanced audio quality. When tuned to and HD station, the audio display will show an "HD" indicator. HD stations have the ability to broadcst multiple signals, called subchannels.

VARIABLE CYLINDER MANAGEMENT (VCM)

This innovative technology enables an Acura engine to run on fewer cylinders when possible to maximize fuel efficiency. On Acura V-6 engines, the system enables the engine to run on 6, 4, or 3 cylinders. On the ILX Hybrid, the system can deactivate all the cylinders under certain conditions, such as coasting or when only the electric motor is powering the vehicle.

EXPANDED VIEW DRIVER'S MIRROR

This mirror is included on certain Acura vehicles, and functions like two mirrors in one. The larger, inset portion of the mirror is flat and works like a regular side view mirror to show objects to the side of the vehicle. The area toward the outside of the mirror begins to curve, and functions like a spot mirror. This expands the driver's view to the side by approximately 43%, helping to reduce the blind-spot area.

TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS)

This system can read the air pressure inside each tire, using sensors located below the valve stem inside each wheel, to warn the driver if a tire's pressure is significantly low. This system is standard on all Acura models. The driver can also access the display to determine the existing tire pressure in each tire. For optimal tire wear and performance, tire pressure should be checked regularly with a gauge. Do not rely solely on the monitor system.

AGILE HANDLING ASSIST

This system selectively used the vehicle's brakes to enhance cornering. The system works by braking the inside wheels in a turn, which generates more turning force. This can be especially useful when the driver is making a sharp turn and is not applying the accelerator through the turn. The Agile Handling Assist system does not alter throttle response, enabling the driver to remain in control and to apply more power when necessary.

AHA COMPATABILITY

This system uses a replaceable air filter to remove minute particle matter, such as pollen and dust, from the incoming air circulated by the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Standard on all Acura models.

TRAFFIC REROUTING

Uses continuously updated traffic information to find the best route to a destination, based on traffic along two or more major routes. When activated, a message appears on the navigation screen indicating "congestion on route." If the navigation system can find a route 10% or two minutes faster than the current route, the system will automatically engage and direct the driver along the faster alternate route, thereby helping to avoid congestion or other traffic incidents. If the trip is longer than 100 minutes, the system will reroute if it can find a time savings of at least 10 minutes. The client must have an active subscription to AcuraLink Real-Time Traffic, which requires a separate subscription from XM Radio

REARVIEW CAMERA

Uses the color information display or navigation system screen to display the image seen by the rearview camera when in reverse. This helps drivers see a potential hazard and avoid obstacles that may be in their path when backing up.

XM RADIO

Vehicles equipped with XM Radio can receive a clear digital signal coast to coast without ever being out of range (within the 48 contiguous United States). Clients can drive state to state and listen to the same channel without static or interruption. Over 170 different channels are available, some of which are commercial-free. After a 90 day trial period, clients who wish to continue to receive the broadcasts are required to pay a monthly subscription fee.

LANE DEPARTURE WARNING (LDW)

When the system detects that the vehicle is leaving its lane unintentionally (no turn signal activation by the driver), the system will sound an audible alert and flash a warning in the MID. The driver must take corrective action, as the system cannot steer the vehicle back into its lane

ELECTRONIC PRETENSIONER (e-PRETENSIONER)

Working in conjunction with the Collision Mitigation Braking System, this electronic tensioning system automatically activates in the second stage of CMBS once the millimeter-wave radar sensor detects a potential collision. The e-pretensioner gives the driver a tactile alert by tugging on his or her seat belt so that the driver may take action to avoid a collision. When the system senses that a frontal collision is unavoidable, the e-pretensioner on both front seats retracts the seat belts with enough force to properly restrain the driver and front passenger. After they activate, the e-pretensioners release the retracted seat belts.

ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION (ANC)

Works by generating opposing, out-of-phase sound waves from the audio system. This reduces unwanted low-frequency cabin noise by as much as 10 db, helping to create a quiet, more relaxed cabin environment and eliminating the need for excessive sound-absorbing insulation in the body
