AUTONOMOUS: tiny part of high art that has potential - FREE OF CAPITALIST SYSTEM - avant-guard art-- genuine aesthetic experience DEPENDENT: - IN CAPITALIST SYSTEM- MASS PRODUCED low arts (not emancipatory potential of art) mass produced -- photography/film **tied to capitalist system -- does NOT have ability to change society/no deeper thought/oppressive ** AFFIRMATIVE: twin of dependent art
NEGATIVE DIALECTIC
- analyzing based on what's not there/what it isn't - WHY-- questioning society in this moment
LABOR & LEISURE
LEISURE-- even when you're "off" you think "its my free time" when really, all of your time is yours. - process of consumption - all of the capitalist construct - Twice reified -- sold you the concept, THEN told you what to do/where to go (movies,mall, $)
TECHNICAL FLAWS
tied to discussion of music talking about AUTONOMOUS ART specifically laws to make art autonomous 12-tone system having to understand the "system" to create new laws -- brings art closer to market FREEDOM and AWAY FROM STATUS QUO
