Conjunction (Intersection)

A compound inequality whose solution consists of the set of elements that are common to both sets.

Disjunction (Union)

A compound inequality whose solution consists of the set of elements that are in either set.

AND

A logical operator representing the intersection of two sets.

OR

A logical operator representing the union of two sets.

Coefficient

A number that is multiplied by a variable.

Constant

A value that does not change.

Literal Equation

An equation that involves two or more variables.

Identity

An equation that is always true, no matter what value is substituted for the variable.

Literal Inequality

An inequality that involves two or more variables.

Infinite Solutions

Any value for the variable makes the equation true.

Solution of an Inequality

Any value(s) of a variable that makes the inequality true.

Compound Inequality

Consists of two distinct inequalities that are combined into one statement by the word AND or OR.

Addition Property of Inequality

States that if equal amounts are added to the expressions on each side of an inequality, the resulting inequality is true.

Subtraction Property of Inequality

States that if equal amounts are subtracted from the expressions on each side of an inequality, the resulting inequality is true.

Division Property of Inequality

States that if you divide each side of an inequality by equal amounts, the inequality remains true. If you divide each side of an inequality by a negative number, you must reverse the order symbol.

Multiplication Property of Inequality

States that if you multiply each side of an inequality by equal amounts, the inequality remains true. If you multiply each side of an inequality by a negative number, you must reverse the order symbol.

Distributive Property

States that the sum of two addends multiplied by a number is the sum of the product of each addend and the number.

Addition Property of Equality

States that you can add the same number to both sides of an equation and the statement will still be true.

Division Property of Equality

States that you can divide both sides of an equation by the same nonzero number and the statement will still be true.

Multiplication Property of Equality

States that you can multiply both sides of an equation by the same number and the statement will still be true.

Subtraction Property of Equality

States that you can subtract the same number from both sides of an equation and the statement will still be true.

Solution Set

The set of all values that make a statement true.

No solution

There is no value for the variable that makes the equation true.

Disjoint (Mutually Exclusive)

Two events that have no outcomes in common.
