monochromatic

Monochromatic colors are all the colors (tints, tones, and shades) of a single hue. Monochromatic color schemes are derived from a single base hue and extended using its shades, tones and tints. Tints are achieved by adding white and shades and tones are achieved by adding a darker color, gray or black.

warm colors

Warm colors are often said to be hues from red through yellow, browns and tans included; cool colors are often said to be the hues from blue green through blue violet, most grays included.

achromatic

In printing, achromatic is used as a synonym for "black and white." A black and white print has shades of grey, but greyscale is also considered to be achromatic because it lacks hue, which means it cannot be classified as a subset of the colors red, green, blue (RGB) or yellow.

color hues

Hue is somewhat synonymous to what we usually refer to as "colors". Red, green, blue, yellow, and orange are a few examples of different hues. The different hues have different wavelenghts in the spectrum. The value is a measurement of the brightness of a colour.

analogous

Analogous (uh-NAL-uh-gus) colors sit next to each other on the color wheel. They tend to look pleasant together because they are closely related. Orange, yellow-orange, and yellow are an example of analogous colors. They are blended nicely in Sunflowers, a painting by Vincent Van Gogh.

secondary

A color produced by mixing two additive primary colors in equal proportions. The secondary colors are cyan (a mixture of blue and green), magenta (a mixture of blue and red), and yellow (a mixture of green and red).

complementary pairs

Complementary colors are pairs of colors which, when combined, cancel each other out. This means that when combined, they produce a grey-scale color like white or black. When placed next to each other, they create the strongest contrast for those particular two colors.

tertiary

For the six RYB hues intermediate between the RYB primary and secondary colors, the names amber/marigold (yellow-orange), vermilion/cinnabar (red-orange), magenta (red-purple), violet (blue-purple), teal/aqua (blue-green), and chartreuse/lime green (yellow-green) are commonly found.

cool colors

The phrase used to describe any color that is calm or soothing in nature. Cool colors are not overpowering and tend to recede in space. Examples of cool colors include white, gray, blue and green (think calming blue waters). Contrast with warm colors.

the properties of colors

The scientific description of color, or colorimetry, involves the specification of all relevant properties of a color either subjectively or objectively. The subjective description gives the hue, saturation, and lightness or brightness of a color.

split complementary

The split-complementary color scheme is a variation of the complementary color scheme. In addition to the base color, it uses the two colors adjacent to its complement. This color scheme has the same strong visual contrast as the complementary color scheme, but has less tension.
